Summer 2021 transfer window

If he becomes the best striker around and is wirth say What Kane is worth now, we have paid the right amount.
Well we haven’t. Too many variables.

Im happy to ignore his current lack of impact/ability, but I said back in the summer we’d overpaid by c. £20m, people weren’t having it. Majority have now realised we have overpaid, although some still feel it’s sound logic to pay £35m (whilst hampering your current recruitment), for a promising youth team record, literally doesn’t happen (when Real Madrid do it the player is already playing senior football and looking the part).

It’s not a case of “he will come good”. For that fee he has to become very good. .

Ignoring inflation - if you factor in Initial transfer fee, cost to develop (wages), short term cost to the team (poorer results), he basically has to be worth a current day £45- 50m to break even. So we’re talking a consistent 15 goal a season striker in the PL. Becoming a Chris Wood will be a failure.

Nobody knew whether the money spent on Fabio would be an over payment in the summer.

He could’ve been like Kane from the off. Now we’ve seen him in senior action we know he isn’t ready and it does look an overpayment but to know in the summer is nonsense.

Disagree. 18 year olds with a handful of minutes In senior football don’t go for £35m.

If he was like Kane from the off he would have had more than a handful of minutes in a dreadful national league for one of the best teams in it. Particularly when Moussa Marega is apparently “utter garbage”

Never read comments under posts on social media if you can help it.

Well you can read the ones under anything I say if you like, if someone's being a mook then I just tell them so.

Agreed it has no effect on the players or the club, and as you point out the safety of a forum allows you to say things you wouldn't say in public , it doesn't make it a very nice place to be though does it ? I watch the game, and if RAN, Saiss, Donck, Podence, Semedo or Fabio makes a mistake I can almost guarantee what the next half a dozen posts on the matchday thread will be, that clamour to be the most outraged by the performance or the mismanagement to me is embarrassing, have you ever wondered why so many people don't go on the matchday thread anymore ?

So they can get attention by constantly highlighting the fact they don't go on it?

If we're into the realms of what makes this a 'nice place to be' then I think that should apply across the board. Who's defining nice here? Who's defining which players are fair game for criticism and which players are sacred cows?

You're entering very dangerous territory trying to thought police all this, I'm not surprised you find it frustrating. If you disagree with someone make an alternative point instead.

Ronaldo (both of them) went for stupid money without being well known, particularly £12m 20 years ago was a very large amount for a relatively untested teen to arguably the biggest club in the world.

Vinicus Jr and Rodrygo have gone for huge money to Madrid too for kids with no experience.

I don't think you can judge any player's worth until you've seen them and to dismiss then before they've kicked a ball is silly.

IG, FB and twitter are cesspits full of trolls and 12 year old idiots. There's maybe 5% of posters on there that have a genuine opinion. The rest just post their inner troll.

The ignore function is your friend on the cesspit of negativity that is the matchday thread.

Remember too that United sold England's captain (who was still a fantastic player even if he had no more improvement in him) to facilitate it all. A quite obvious downgrade in the immediate term. They even stopped seriously contending for league titles for 2-3 years, which given their previous 20 years was a big slip in status.

But by 2005 it was becoming obvious that it was the better long-term move and it was a complete no brainer inside a further 12 months.

Ronaldo hardly played for Sporting before he came to England. 11 league starts. I'd never heard of him.

I'd also never seen Fabio when we signed him so I couldn't have made a judgement either way.

You came up with those examples in the summer when I first said it and I discussed why they weren’t comparable (not even remotely, ignoring the fact that they went to the biggest teams in the world). R9 didn’t but he was tearing it up!

Of course they were comparable.

Judging players without seeing them is daft.

The amount spent relative to the club is relevant though. RVN was already at Utd and cost about 50% more than Ronaldo.

Wasn’t judging the player, was judging the fee.

They weren’t comparable. The others were playing first team football, and looking the part in a good league.

Ronaldo is slightly different as the story is that he ran rings around them in a preseason game, but before that still had a full season in senior football to show he had something. Fabio Silva had no senior football to base paying £35m. Not a massive leap to say we’d overpaid.

I'm not advocating a 'nice place to be' I'm berating the echo chamber of condemnation that occurs every game and it's the same people over and over again, but of course in your eyes they're view holds more validity than someone who's more pragmatic.
Thanks for the life lesson though !
