Summer 2021 transfer window

Well it isn’t for me. I support a provincial club that doesn’t have a bottomless pit of resources. I imagine his weekly wage is considerably higher than you average U21 player too?
Of course, you can totally say we over paid for him.

But that doesn't mean he's now shit, likewise, if we signed him for free he suddenly doesn't become a better player.

I remember Ronaldo playing at the Mol when we won 1-0. He was utter shite and we were all singing 'You're not the real Ronaldo'. Let's give Silva a chance eh?

I know what you're saying, but I don't think all these desperate and unfounded wishful comparisons to genuine generational talents like Ronaldo and Kane are really doing Fab any favours!

He could become the best striker there ever was. That still hide the fact we have massively overpaid.

I don’t why people pretend that isn’t the case and we “scared away the big boys”
If he becomes the best striker ever then we got an absolute bargain.

I think it's more to highlight the point that 18/19 is no age to write a player off

Kane wasn't a generational talent and never hailed as one.

He wasn't quick, strong or even technically very good at 17/ 18 (sound familiar?)

He was also home grown so no transfer fee.

I think Fabio is very similar to the Kane development and Kane was Lg1 standard which is where Fabio is right now. Only an idiot would've said Kane was worth £35m at that point.

Fast forward a few years and £35m wouldn't get you one of Kane's boots.

And so without pace and skill there probably wasn’t much that made Kane stand out from the crowd over 10’s of other players with decent movement at his age that never made it to the top.

Kind of feels like we have gone out and bought 35 million lottery tickets in the hope we win the jackpot. There must be more to Silva than we are seeing surely?

Well that’s like saying you got a bargain when you won loads putting £100 on 0 in roulette. You didn’t get a bargain, you got lucky.

Too many variables, limited ability to judge his ability based on career experience etc.

There is, I think he needs a loan at a lower level to show it (I know some people hate the loan system but it worked for Kane).

But you're right it does feel as though it's a hell of a risk.

I said "a 3 month purple patch around Xmas 2019"

6 of his 9 assists came in November, December and January that season. One before November, and 2 post lockdown.

Not really mythical

Except for the first few and last few games of the season, his assists were spread throughout the campaign.

He had a very good season, not a 'purple patch'.

Saying the latter is just negative and unsupportive of our players, the kind of stuff a lot of people get lectured about on here every week

What I mean is that Kane and Ronaldo are two of the best players of their generation.

Why are people even mentioning Fabio in the same breath as them at this point? And then often trying to lower expectations at the same time

I was responding to your statement saying that if he became the best striker in the world we'd have over paid. That kind of assumes that we did land on 0.

This kind of decision is down to the club and I'd hope it's more accurate than roulette.

Whatever mate, we will never agree here and cant be bothered going round in circles. You think hes great, I don't.

Please dont suggest I dont support our players though. I always do, and have said up thread I hope Adama does well tomorrow. I dont throw that accusation at anyone, dont throw it at me

Well that’s why I said “we have”. Present tense rather than future. As we can’t know the future.

I don't think he's 'great' any more than Doc was great, but they both deserve to have their shortcomings assessed fairly and their achievements noted the same.

Trying to twist a very good season into an 'aberration' to prove a point is unnecessary and negative, and if me pointing that out upsets you then you have first hand experience of what a lot of non-moderators get levelled at them week after week

It isn’t pretence for gods sake. It’s what we did. And yes we hugely overpaid to do so. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

That's fair, and it's just my view of course.

Rightly or wrongly I try to take the transfer fee out of the equation when evaluating a player, because it doesn't affect their performance or ability.

Evaluating the value of a transfer is a separate conversation, for me anyway.
If Fabio fails, the transfer fee will be the biggest factor and the expectation that comes with it.

I see a lot of 'the fee is irrelevant', 'he didn't ask to be bought for that', 'he's only 18' all of which is fair, but in the eyes of many, probably the majority of fans he's our record signing and that trumps any of the age or development factors. If we'd paid half of that the mitigating factors would be consisdered more.

I guarantee if fans had been in the stadium his miss on Thursday would have got the Molineux sigh. I hope his finishing improves next season or he's mentally tough, he's fortunate this year that he's not been exposed to what the real expectation is yet.

The normal response to posts like this is 'well our fans our dickheads', which may well be the case, but it doesn't alter the reality.

What I said on the previous page...

"The first season he was poor, second season good (very good in parts) this season dreadful."

The very good part is the November to January period I mentioned. Not sure how that is twisting. He got the majority of his assists in that period, it was a very good period. And I said overall a good season from him. Brilliant? No. Good? Yes. The 3 month period - brilliant, hence a purple patch.

Oh, and dont worry mate I wont be losing any sleep or shedding tears. If posters are accused (by others, not myself) of not supporting the side then maybe they should look at what they are posting
