Summer 2020 Transfer Window (Extended Version)

Asamoah Gyan must have filled you with rage.

We've had plenty of our own.

McNamara 7
Irwin 8
Ward 11 despite clearly being a LB and nothing else for years
Clapham 11
Bazeley 3, never played on the left ever
Ward/Collins 2, that's not for a CH
Williamson/Marshall/Weimann with stupid numbers in the 60s when we had spare numbers higher up

Poor maintenance is what it is.

Cav was 50

Ketsbaia as 9 (emphatically not a striker, although this didn't hit Colin Lee's amazing mind until months after we signed him) hurts too.

Charlton did their squad numbers based on the alphabet in the 90s, think a 70s Argentina did at one World Cup too?

Horrid.

Does anyone really care what numbers players wear? It’s a bit weird.

I've only just got used to Patricio being 11 to be honest!

Yep, Stuart Balmer wore number 1. Centre half.

I do care.

Aesthetics count, man. I don't care how weird that is.

You'd be happy with Raul wearing 4 next season, would you? No, a piece of you would die inside every single game and you know it deep down.

Number 4 is a weird number anyway.

Genuinely doesn’t bother me either way really, the childish part of me quite likes it when a player wearing 78 trundles on to play Centre Half.

Akinbiyi's tiny little plus sign inbetween the 2 5's on his back still annoys me. As does Milan Baros wearing number 5.

I’d be happy with Raul wearing any number for us next season, if I’m totally honest.

No mention of Dave Edwards wearing a traditional CB number?

Obviously I came to the sport late, but I'm with Tredders. My first favorite player was Xabi Alonso and he wore a "substitute" number.

Positions are always in flux, anyway. What number is a third CB "supposed" to wear? 13? It's all wacky.

Mexican clubs would drive you guys insane with their numbers.

Dave Edwards didn't wear a centre half's number.

Err...

1– Goalkeeper
2– Right Fullback
3– Left Fullback
4– Center Back
5– Center Back (or Sweeper, if used)
6– Defending/Holding Midfielder
7– Right Midfielder/Winger
8– Central/Box-to-Box Midfielder
9– Striker
10– Attacking Midfielder/Playmaker
11– Left Midfielder/Wingers

Number 4 is the defensive midfielder and 6 is the centre back.

4, 5 and 6 for your CBs if you have 3, yes.

But in a traditional 442 formation 6 was CB and 4 was CM.

So if we suddenly didn't have squad numbers and you were to give Wolves players 1-11 v Sheff U it'd be:

1 - Rui
2 - Doc
3 - Jonny
4 - Boly
5 - Coady
6 - Saiss
7 - Traore
8 - Neves
9 - Raul
10 - Moutinho
11 - Jota

The first time numbers were used in association football in Europe was 25 August 1928 when Sheffield Wednesday played Arsenal and Chelsea hosted Swansea Town at Stamford Bridge. Numbers were assigned by field location:

1-Goalkeeper
2-Right full back (right wing defender)
3-Left full back (left wing defender)
4-Right centre-half (central right defender)
5-Left centre-half (centre left defender)
6-Left half back (left side defensive midfield)
7-Outside right (right winger)
8-Inside right (attacking midfield)
9-Centre forward (central attacker)
10-Inside left (attacking midfield)
11-Outside left (left winger)

But w/e. I can't help my pedantry, really.

Upon further examination, looks like it varied from country to country. I'm using a western European (continental, obviously) system, it seems.
