Ruben Neves

I was surprised just how much time and space Cardiff gave him on Friday night. Played right into his and our hands.

Warnock spent so much time and effort trying to eliminate our wing backs, he neglected that Neves would then be given so much freedom.

Their formation was weird! Effectively 631

I KNOW he's good already, but after watching that video, I realise that I sometimes forget just HOW good he is. Virtually every time he receives the ball, he has one touch to control it, turns, looks up and slots a 30/40 yd pass out to the wings or through the middle for the runner. If he's marked, he's aware of the man on him and gives him the slip as he receives the ball with a dip of the shoulder, or a little bit of fancy footwork, before turning and dishing out the trademark long pass. And how many times has the player receiving the pass had to stop and wait for the ball or run after it because it was over-hit/under-hit or off-target? Hardly ever. We have been so, so lucky to have him this year and it would be so good to have him for at least one season in the prem.

There was a video of all his touches and passes at the very start of the season, possibly the Derby game, and it just showed how much class he has compared to anything else we'd seen in the past.

Brilliant clip in that video at 1.27 where Edwards can't get near him even trying to pull him back, he passes the ball and Edwards sorts of stops but realises he's found Douglas and his frustration boils over.

When you consider where we've moved on from and in such little time makes it all the more joyous. A year ago Edwards as our CM was making a dozen touches per game to this.

A few people on this thread are saying they hope that we can keep Neves for one more season before he moves on. For me what happens with him is also a test of what the clubs ultimate ambitions are. I have no reason to believe that Fosun's ambitions are anything other than to get us to the top level where we are challenging for Champions League football, if that is the case then we should be keeping Neves as he has come to us knowing what the project is and if he is happy here I'm sure he will want see the job through before moving on to Porto at some point. If we are unable to keep him beyond next season, then that might be an indication of where we are eventually going to end up. I am not naive enough to think that other factors might not come in to play if the Premierships "Big Guns" start trying to turn his head, but I would hope that at his age he would be willing to develop along with us under a head coach who he clearly has a good relationship with, as long as our ambitions match his own or we have tried and failed!.

I have 9 shares in Neves, in the Football Index, increased by 23P each share since I bought them.
Also have Jota he's gone up 5p.

Neves is superb

I thought third party ownership had been outlawed...

The noises I've heard grown men make while watching Ruben Neves play football this season... I'll never look at AikiWolf the same way again...

Lycan sums it up perfectly - I've made numerous such noises myself!

Unless next year goes woefully, I can see Neves being here at least 2 more years. He's central to the team, and Nuno was a big factor bringing him in. I doubt either of those are likely to change hugely in the near future, as said, unless next season goes beyond awful.

As NE66wolf says above, in the close season we're likely to bring in 2 or 3 additional quality players (as good as Neves) for different roles in the squad. This summer will show us a lot about how we're progressing, and where we see ourselves.

Neves is easily the best Wolves player I have seen. I hope we do retain him for a couple of years, and make similar quality additions.

FWIW, someone who's cat has recently had kittens was trying to palm a kitten off to me. It's selling points were:
1 - its colours were gold, black and white, ergo wolves colours
2 - I could call it Rueben...

I have been watching Wolves since 1960. Neves is the best Wolves player I have ever seen only Peter Knowles came anywhere close.

i never got to see knocker (other than the odd clip on YT), never mind Peter Broadbent and the great payers of the 50s. we've all had favourites since then and we were very lucky with Bully. i had hoped for a brief period that Robbie Keane was going to be our once in a generation player. hopefully with the backing behind the club we'll get the chance to see Neves getting us competitive in the top division - it will have been a long time coming. he is the dogs, there's no doubt.

Just count myself fortunate enough to have watched Broadbent Knowles and Neves in my lifetime. Very hard to compare the three because of the different way football was played in each era. As VW says, Broadbent controlled the game - his vision and range of passing was sublime, as is Neves. Knowles was explosively exciting, but (in my view) still a work in progress when he 'retired'. Adding more discipline to his game under a top class coach could have made the finished article better then Broadbent or Neves - but we'll never know.

Broadbent should have had dozens of caps for England, but then Johnny Haynes was the selectors golden boy - and he wasn't bad! I hope Neves storms the world cup for Portugal.

Yep, totally agree with this.

In fact, I might even have to change my forum name and signature at this rate! :D

I missed seeing Peter Broadbent play, but my Dad saw him and reckoned he was the most talented Wolves player he ever saw.

I saw Peter Knowles play and agree with what Bertiewolf has said in that he was not quite the finished product - an enormous talent though - but he was more of a goal-scoring midfielder rather than a central midfielder which is what Neves is.

In fact over the last 50 years I can’t say Wolves have been blessed with too many outstanding central midfielders - Kenny Hibbitt was like Knowles (not to the same skill level, but more industrious and with a lethal right foot) and Mike Bailey was more of a defensive/holding midfielder.

The only player I can recall who showed glimpses of the skillset we see in Neves is the late Danny Hegan. In the early 70s he could never quite establish myself in the team (ill-discipline, drink and competition from McCalliog and Hibbitt). But when Bailey was injured for a length of time in the 2nd half of 71/71 Hegan was a regular and played outstandingly, especially in Wolves run to the UEFA Cup Final. He scored a belter against Juventus (YouTube clip misses his strike) and he nearly scored from the halfway line in the 1st leg final vs Spurs. But by the following season he lapsed. A real waste of talent IMHO.

So Neves is certainly the best midfielder I’ve seen in a Wolves shirt - hopefully for another season or two.

And a world cup spot was gained.

I'm becoming more and more convinced he needs a nickname. Like a proper, footballing nickname. Like say how Baggio was the Divine Ponytail. I can't for the life of me think of a good one right now but I'm sure someone can.

After his goal against Cardiff the commentator called him the 'Magic Man'.

That's sounds good to me
