Ron Flowers has died aged 87, which is terrible news. I think he's the last of the great team(s) to leave us
After the Sir Jack statue that looks like it was ordered of Wish I think I'm good with statues. I agree we should have some recognition of one of our great playersThat's sad news. My dad told me a lovely story about a time he bumped in to Ron at a Shropshire gold course. Said he gave him lots of time for a chat and was a thoroughly likable gent. Thoughts are with his family and friends. You'd think Wolves might do a statue or potentially name something within the ground after him?
The Sir Jack statue really is awful isn't it, such as a shame as the Wright and Cullis ones are superb. After the Sir Jack statue that looks like it was ordered of Wish I think I'm good with statues. I agree we should have some recognition of one of our great players
Let's Go Steady AgainI always think the sir Jack statue looks more like Neil Sedaka (kids go ask your nan)
Like you, Bertie, I remember Ron Flowers very well. He was a class performer and a class gentleman. The highlight I remember of his playing days was when he scored against Newcastle in the third round replay of the FA Cup at Molineux in January, 1960, the year that Wolves went all the way to Wembley to beat Blackburn 3-0. That goal from about 35 yards out was a superb shot that never left the snow-covered ground and scorched it way into the net to make it 3-2 for Wolves. That was the turning point in that game and likely in that season's cup run. He was a magnificent attacking midfielder then and a wonderful person off the pitch. He is the last one of that glorious team to leave us and you are right, he was the heartbeat of the 50s team, along with Peter Broadbent and, I would add, Jimmy Mullen. But you can't underestimate the roles played by Bert Williams, Bill Slater, Roy Swinbourne, Johnny Hancocks, and Dennis Wilshaw. Wow! What a team that was. It makes me realize that time is getting short for us old'uns. All our stars of the 50s have now passed!Such sad news. For those of us of a certain age, Ron was Wolves. Such a classy footballer - the heartbeat of that 50's / 60's team with Peter Broadbent. Always had time for the fans, whether we were primary school kids running round West Park collecting the balls as Wolves trained there, or as grown men just wanting to acknowledge how we had admired him.
RIP Ron
