My first Wolves hero. I also fondly remember five minutes spent in his company while he fitted a new handle grip on my cricket bat and we chatted about Wolves.
He played before my time, but his record is such that he probably sits second to Billy Wright as Wolves greatest playing legend.
I did meet him once . . . My dad was playing at the Oxley golf course in a club tournament and I was his caddy (I was 10 or 11) and in the afternoon round dad was accompanied by Ron.
He was such a gentleman and so friendly and chatty, especially to a star-struck young kid who did know who he was.
Going to matches as a kid in the early 60's when there was no sky sports and mobile phone apps, you never knew the team till they were running out - no pre kick off routines then. My heart used to drop a beat if Ron wasn't leading us out as it seemed we would be playing the match with a man short. Great days and fantastic memories !!
I dealt with Ron when he ran his sports shop in Queen Street, nothing was too much trouble for him. A really nice gentleman, he will be sadly missed. I never got to see him play but my Dad told me how great he was, and Mom always said how handsome he looked.
