Refereeing question

I'm wonder wht (if any) action would be taken in regards to this interview then, as such comments in the UK may bring forward a charge of bringing the game into disrepute or suchlike.

Just out of curiosity, do the referees assistants get adjudicated in the same way as referees do ?

The assistants get assessed but not in the same way as the referee. With the assistants the assessor looks at their positioning, interpretation of offside, co-operation with the referee and control of the technical area.

Just seen there is a Collina refereeing masterclass on demand on Sky from tonight. Will definitely be watching that, looks interesting. They showed a snippet on SSN confirming the audio between the fifth official behind the goal and Howard Webb in the Bayern vs Real game. Those ones that cuntrag Chiles always says do nothing, the clueless gimp.

I will not clog up the verdict thread with a discussion about the referee, but there seems to be a few people saying the referee did not have a very good game. I wonder why? We cannot say he was poor because he awarded Blackburn a penalty or gave them twice as many free kicks as Wolves. So as a matter of interest in what respect did Mr Stroud have a poor game?

As with most complaints, its the inconsistency of the decisions. For example, VLP catches their player and free kick is given. 2 minutes later VLP is chopped in half with a dangerous challenge and nothing is given at all and then VLP goes shoulder to shoulder and a free kick is given. It appeared at times that slight niggly challenges resulted in a free kick for Blackburn but we needed to be all out assaulted to get something. He also didn't keep up with play. Towards the end of the game, Doherty was hacked down but the ref was nowhere near the incident and missed it and tried to make out the ball had been won (it hadn't btw)

He did get one great decision when he booked a Blackburn player for diving. That said, he should have had a word with David Dunn who play acted like a right cunt. Got clipped, went down, rolled around in agony holding his ankle, ref waved play on, he looked up, got up and carried on his wobble towards the penalty area. (that's more of a complaint at Dunn but I wish the refs would slap that behaviour down)

He was tits. Had a mental 15 minutes in the first half where he gave Blackburn absolutely everything - three free kicks in particular inside about two minutes around our box and none of them were fouls. RVLP's yellow card was a joke too.

His booking was for persistent fouling, so I can see why he booked him just a shame there was no persistent fouling just persistent shite decision making.

A couple of interesting points there. Fitness wise, all referees have to pass a test before the season starts so Mr Stroud must have passed it. However if he was struggling to keep up with play then the assessor will certainly have noticed it, and will bring it to his attention.

Inconsistency is a difficult one, as referees are expected to apply the laws of the game fairly and consistently.

Regarding players diving, I totally agree with you. Referees can and should take action against them.

Thanks for your response Kenny. Tomorrow I will find out who the assessor was, and if I am lucky I might just get to see his report of Mr Stroud's performance.

The worst thing for me was giving a foul throw against Doherty. Unbelievable scenes given that the majority of throws in the professional game are foul throws for one reason or another.

Did the referee or his assistant judge it a foul throw? Though I agree about throws generally. Most would be deemed illegal in Sunday morning games.

A Blackburn player made a clear foul throw in the 2nd half and wasn't pulled up. If you pull players up for foul throws then you need to be consistent, not just at a whim.

The referee gave the foul throw. Like Penk states Rovers had a blatant one allowed in the second half.

Good news folks. We are hopeful of having Howard Webb as our guest speaker at one of our RA meetings next year. No date finalised as of yet, but April looks like being a possibility.

Please form an orderly queue if you want a ticket.

I like Howard Webb and think that would be quite interesting evening

I think we need a lot more detail on this. I am a little unsure about how this will work.

Same as the NFL Frank. Break in play, manager throws a flag/ item/ presses a button and the referee comes to the sideline. Whatever decision is reviewed. If the manager is successful he gets another challenge. If not he loses it.

There are 27 cameras in and around Premier League games which makes this possible. I don't think it's feasible outside of the top level as the camera angles are not there.

It's about bloody time football had it. We're in the dark ages sometimes with technology.

I was sceptical about goal line technology and there's still a part of me that's uneasy that there's now an effective divide in the playing conditions dependent on the level of competition - but because it's instant and reliable, and 100% objective, I've come round to it.

I'm far less keen on this as it will inevitably hold games up and there are incidents where it is impossible to make a definitive call even after video evidence. It also won't stop prats like Steve Bruce moaning when a decision goes against them after they've wasted a challenge. They'll demand the ability to question everything.

Sports like tennis, cricket, NFL, rugby where there are frequent natural breaks in play are far more suitable for this system IMO.
