O'Neil Confirmed

Erm... we definitely won't be troubling the top 8, that's not even part of the conversation!!

You seem very complacent about our chances of going down considering all the issues piling up, most of the media thinking we will and the fact we have Spud with a 9 month CV at the helm.

We all know what Lopetegui meant by being competitive.
Well most of us know what he meant…

A lot will depend on his backroom team as well as the Head coach. I presume he`s had a say in who comes in.

Jenkins was his Asst at Bournemouth, he was at Portsmouth with Derry and Robson has been around for ever, so I'd imagine they are his guys. Beyond that it's now club appointments at fitness, analyst etc rather than the manager's

For the uninitiated, does anyone have any knowledge about / insight into O'Neil's backroom staff? I saw some references much earlier in the thread to some unsavoury, old-school-bully types, but not sure if they were suspected or confirmed appointments.

EDIT: As if by magic, TT has pretty much answered my question!

As we have gone back the plan we had with Beale, I presume we will see the arrival of the Wolves appointed coach. One who will remain when the manager/head coach goes.
That's the role we spoke to Rob Edwards about.

Just watched MOTD and the stats from Bournemouth were pretty noticably different from O'Neil to Iraola. I get they have had some additions and that it's one game, but it potentially hints that it wasn't just "what else could you expect with that squad" potentially.

Potentially, but I’d imagine the next club Lop goes to will likely play a better brand of football than we did under him.

Obviously we have nothing else to compare O’Neils style to, but I don’t think it’s a dead cert we will play like Bournemouth last year

4 of the 11 didn't feature much or at all last season.

I saw that graphic on MOTD and tbh thought it was a bit of a silly comparison based on just one match

Against bottem half team, also ignored 1 important stat as it didn't suit the narrative touches in opposition box, 23 v West Ham as against 21 last season.
Suggest lots of possession in non dangerous areas yesterday.

It does and the other comments are fair (I did set out it was only one game) However it does also highlight that some of the "well what else was he supposed to do." thinking may actually be unfair, and that some of it will have been a choice from O'Neil.

One game or not it's a fairly drastic change no?

Bottom line for Gary O' Neil is whether or not the players respect him and buy into what he is asking them . They didn't do it for Lage after a short time and we all saw how that turned out .

I'll wait and see how we get on before forming any conclusions .
This.

A lot seems to be being made of O’Neil’s dreadful style of football (can’t say I saw it myself apart from the game against us, they were OK but limited) but Lopetegui’s Wolves didn’t exactly blow teams away with scintillating Pep Barcelona-esque stuff. A lot of the time it was fairly turgid and slow.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we’ve scouted a manager who plays a similar style (hopefully with a bit more urgency) and formation as opposed to us ripping it all up and starting again.

To be honest, as long as we are competitive I don’t mind - I can’t be dealing with the Wolves of last season who surrender to 6-0 and 5-0 lampings, or lose 4-2 to Leeds.

The Leeds game was just weird, we defended like a pub team but scored 2, missed at least 3 really easy chances and nonsensically had a nailed on pen turned down.

I was fine with the majority of our home performances under Lopetegui. But then we had and have quite a lot of good players, we were never as bad as Lage made us look.
