Watched all the Forest game to have a good look at MGW tonight.
First half I found promising but frustrating. There was a really good early ball across to Ndiaye when he'd broke on to a loose ball but the keeper spread himself well to prevent the goal. Can't knock the lad for effort and endeavour, constantly chasing and closing, always looking like he wants to make something happen but none of his little flicks and blind passes were finding the mark. Sort of reminded me of what we'd see from Jota in the past where a bad game wouldn't hold him back from putting himself out there, just kept taking the chance with risky plays rather than going for the safe option and looking steady. Ultimately though I think it was an enthusiastic but disappointing half for him, must have given the ball away twice as often as he kept it, shrugged off it easily a few times and no assist to show for the good pass.
Second half continued with the energetic approach, disappointed to see a bit sort of half hearted dive but he isn't the first and won't be the last to gamble on a chance of a rogue leg in the box. Not quite sure how he ended up free in the centre of goal against three centre halves to score but then Forest repeated that trick for the second goal too. Did what he had to do though and expected him to settle down a bit from there. Seemed to be quieter in the game from that point on though, whether that was result of tiredness due to his approach, Forest doing something different or plain rub of the green, I just can't recall much involvement in the rest of that half bar one other lovely ball into Ndiaye which he shinned over this time.
Extra time again he seemed pretty quiet other than a nice turn up against Cook which drew a foul and a booking. Definitely looked shagged at this point though. Then the penalty is what it is, plenty of players take toss pens from time to time, shit happens.
Can see stylistically why he hasn't been used much at Wolves, he tries to play everything at a tempo about 10 times quicker than another else in the team looks to try. He'd be popping off first time passes and flicking things round corners for players who were at least a couple of weeks away from making that run. Shame though because I like that spirit, I like quick football but the movement isn't there in the wider Wolves team to make it happen. MGW showed he's got it in his locker for a measured pass too when he's got a bit more time and space so perhaps he could be better served at times by slowing it down and taking a touch.
I think it would take a fair shake up of the first team to really get anything like the best out of him on that evidence. People grow frustrated with Podence wasting a lot of possession with things he tries and I think MGW would end up looking the same if he tried to play with the same mentality as tonight. His work rate and endeavour would undoubtedly cut him more slack than the Portuguese alternative though, can't knock him on that front even if at times his pressing was a little naive. Think he'd struggle physically in the same way Podence at times does against Premier League defenders and I don't think his touch is always as a slick as it could be which again would be leapt upon by PL defenders.
If there's an ambition to return to the early season ideals of higher pressing and quicker football I think he's a better fit than many in the first team but I've still got my doubts in terms of overall quality that he'll cut it at the top level.
