Loan Watch 2021-22

All of the Sheff Utd misses were down to being spooked by Forest's keeper. MGW's effort was awful.

To be fair I thought MGW was absolutely dead on his feet for most of ET and was very surprised he was allowed to take a penalty. Some great work by Samba though

Meh you can say it’s the keeper mind games but the first pen is a great save. Second one holds his ground and still gets a strong wrist to it, another great save really at that power. Not sure the mind games were a factor. MGW’s was just a poor pen and he didn’t really do any mind games for that one.

Haven't seen a replay but initially for the first thought he came off his line

Excellent season for MGW overall though, he's needed an extended run to get minutes and get some confidence.

Bring him back and give him a fair shake, he'll never have a better opportunity given how dire up front we've been.

Make him an important part of the team and we will really find out if he can be what he looks like he can be. Just have him on the periphery and it will drive me mad

Can he play on Sunday?
I think technically there isn't anything stopping us if the loan got terminated before Friday. He doesn't need registering because of his age.

Won't happen though.

Watched all the Forest game to have a good look at MGW tonight.

First half I found promising but frustrating. There was a really good early ball across to Ndiaye when he'd broke on to a loose ball but the keeper spread himself well to prevent the goal. Can't knock the lad for effort and endeavour, constantly chasing and closing, always looking like he wants to make something happen but none of his little flicks and blind passes were finding the mark. Sort of reminded me of what we'd see from Jota in the past where a bad game wouldn't hold him back from putting himself out there, just kept taking the chance with risky plays rather than going for the safe option and looking steady. Ultimately though I think it was an enthusiastic but disappointing half for him, must have given the ball away twice as often as he kept it, shrugged off it easily a few times and no assist to show for the good pass.

Second half continued with the energetic approach, disappointed to see a bit sort of half hearted dive but he isn't the first and won't be the last to gamble on a chance of a rogue leg in the box. Not quite sure how he ended up free in the centre of goal against three centre halves to score but then Forest repeated that trick for the second goal too. Did what he had to do though and expected him to settle down a bit from there. Seemed to be quieter in the game from that point on though, whether that was result of tiredness due to his approach, Forest doing something different or plain rub of the green, I just can't recall much involvement in the rest of that half bar one other lovely ball into Ndiaye which he shinned over this time.

Extra time again he seemed pretty quiet other than a nice turn up against Cook which drew a foul and a booking. Definitely looked shagged at this point though. Then the penalty is what it is, plenty of players take toss pens from time to time, shit happens.

Can see stylistically why he hasn't been used much at Wolves, he tries to play everything at a tempo about 10 times quicker than another else in the team looks to try. He'd be popping off first time passes and flicking things round corners for players who were at least a couple of weeks away from making that run. Shame though because I like that spirit, I like quick football but the movement isn't there in the wider Wolves team to make it happen. MGW showed he's got it in his locker for a measured pass too when he's got a bit more time and space so perhaps he could be better served at times by slowing it down and taking a touch.

I think it would take a fair shake up of the first team to really get anything like the best out of him on that evidence. People grow frustrated with Podence wasting a lot of possession with things he tries and I think MGW would end up looking the same if he tried to play with the same mentality as tonight. His work rate and endeavour would undoubtedly cut him more slack than the Portuguese alternative though, can't knock him on that front even if at times his pressing was a little naive. Think he'd struggle physically in the same way Podence at times does against Premier League defenders and I don't think his touch is always as a slick as it could be which again would be leapt upon by PL defenders.

If there's an ambition to return to the early season ideals of higher pressing and quicker football I think he's a better fit than many in the first team but I've still got my doubts in terms of overall quality that he'll cut it at the top level.

I've seen a fair bit of MGW this season and there's not a lot I'd disagree with Mark on. I can see the Podence comparison, but his finishing, passing and delivery is sharper...at least at Championship level. His first touch - often needs one to get the ball from out of his feet and lack of pace would be a concern in the PL. He's not a second striker or a wide forward, definitely an advanced midfielder in a 4231, but that's the formation I'd like to see us play anyway. Now Sheff U aren't going up I doubt there's £20m out there now so I'd definitely be giving him the first opportunity in that role next season, although I don't think it's a given that it'll come off.

Might one of the other promotion teams splash out on him?
I tend to agree with you on his best position as 10 or AM but tbf when he's been played wide and also as a second striker this season, he's done well. I get that the Championship is a lower level but with better players around him (assuming we have any left) I'd give him a go. That's a proper chance not 5 minutes here and there. I agree with YW, if that's all he'll be here for then I'd rather sell him.

It's a big summer for Morgan as his value is at a high financially and what he can offer us going forward is something we have not had this season. I have seen quite a few Sheffield United games this season in terms of consistency he is getting better (although it is at a lower level) and is clearly growing as a player but still can go missing in a game or try blind fancy flicks.

Currently I'd have him ahead of Hwang & Trincao as an attacking option easily (Neto & Podence if fit are probably ahead of Morgan) but I suppose the question is If we bring in other attacking players this summer as I don't see Morgan in a midfield 2 (maybe in a 3 just ahead of a 2). If we bring in another attacker or 2 he will probably fall down the pecking order again and have to fight for his place I assume Morgan just wants first team football and not be a squad player.

This could be a Lingard situation do we sell him while his stock is high or have him sit on the bench and watch his value plummet. I have a feeling if any offer over £20M comes in we probably sell him

By all accounts it sounds like Podence wants out, and if a player doesn't want to be here, there's no point keeping him because that just upsets the dressing room. I don't think we'll struggle to sell Podence if that is the case. I can see MGW being a direct replacement for Podence in the squad and probably used as much. The only problem is, he isn't really a "winger". He's better served playing in behind a striker and in an advanced midfield role, making things happen in and around the box. There's absolutely an opportunity for him here (if he still wants it), because we simply have to find a way of scoring more goals - and I think he could help us in doing that. I like how he drifts in to the box and gets on the end of crosses. We haven't had a player do that for time - I guess Hwang was supposed to be that man but, well, he's shite.

Get him back, sound him out, make sure he's up for the challenge and wants it - then give him an opportunity.

Knowing Fosun, they'll probably sell him for £10m.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Fulham and Palace make enquiries for him.

By all accounts it sounds like Podence wants out
By what accounts? It's all whispers and hearsay isn't it?

And anyway, players that are disgruntled (potentially Jonny, Podence, Hoever(!), Coady) will change that if the manager leaves.
