Let's talk about Nuno....

the only concern i have ever had with Nuno, is whether he has a plan b.
a lot of the other stuff is in his dna. the late subs has always been his style for example. he's not the type to make 3 changes at half time.
it's been on my mind before at times like the huddersfield games, or the twice per season draw with brighton.
the change to 3-5-2 did seem like a type of plan b. with hindsight, it was more a sub-division of 3-4-3.
I do think it is right that Nuno is looking at options/opportunities. I also am a big fan of us having so many talented young players, and we are lucky enough to observe their development.
It could be that this season is effectively being used as a very long pre-season. Try things out but at high intensity.
It is kinda exciting. It's certainly risky. I expect we will learn a lot from it.

And how does reeling off a list of players prove anything anyway? When we don't know their demands, personalities, whether they fit the managers profile etc. or more importantly, how they play.

As somebody who has worked in a professional recruitment team I can quite happily tell you it’s fucking difficult to sign any players at any level to be back ups. And yes I’ve fucking found dozens of players who said no. One player would happily have moved but didn’t want to take a pay cut at his current club, who wants that sort of shitbeak at their club?

Does that mean I have a better opinion than anybody? Absolutely not but when people roll out the ‘club should be doing better’ without any alternatives it’s just fucking moaning and shitty.

Can we get back to discussing Nuno please as I was really enjoying that.

Obviously your previous real life experience means this is a big focus for you. Doesn't mean it has to be for everyone else, especially when you (often quite belligerently tbf) insist on it as the only acceptable criteria for serious inclusion in the discussion.

We're all trying to articulate what we see as wrong, usually on the verdict thread, so reeling off a load of names is fine, but all it often does is mean people turn their complete attention to 'no way, player x is crap/too expensive etc' arguments (which are probably better on the transfer thread) when anyone brings up a name anyway, or everyone agrees on obvious targets.

I think discussing the merits of the profile of the players we actually sign and what we can see, game after game, that they're bringing to the squad is of more interest personally, and actually relates to real events. You're wrong to see that as 'moaning and shitty', but I imagine we won't agree on this.

Finally, as I've said previously, I thoroughly reject this idea that 'oh doing x is fucking difficult' means that we can't wonder if the club made the right choice when trying to do x. It's elite sport, I imagine most of what we try and do is 'fucking difficult', that's why we get highly paid professionals to do it, doesn't mean we have to jettison analysis or criticism.

You should probably read the thread more carefully before playing to the gallery, as the 'hypocrisy' you think is such a slam dunk is actually a sarcastic response to Haggstone (post 122 if you want to re read it). My analysis (and in fact a lot of people's from what I read) is not that the club failed or that getting a backup for Raul isn't hard, just that it isn't impossible, and that just solely signing Fabio was not wise.

The club made a choice to spend a lot of money, time and resources on signing Fabio, do you have proof they were trying to sign anyone else as well and didn't do so because it was too difficult? I don't. I'm just going by what they did do

He is absolutely 100% the man for the job. I like that we gamble on young players - nobody had heard of Pedro Neto and now look at him, and I'm sure Fabio Silva will follow a similar upturn eventually. He's a 19-year old in a new country, during a pandemic, and he's having to fill very big boots upfront: a lot of seasoned pros would struggle with all of those things.

It's insane to think of replacing Nuno when I bet pretty much every club in the Premier League (except Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham and Southampton) would love for him to be their manager.

This season was always a write-off for me: no pre-season and no fans? I'll be happy with anything 17th upwards, and I don't buy into this mentality that our best stars will leave due to it.

They signed Cutrone in a previous window and that didn't work out well so rather than try that again they went for a different approach.

Clearly the club knew Raul needed a back up (or they wouldn't have signed Cutrone) but this time they went for a different approach, one can assume because it's difficult to get a ready made back-up striker with all the qualities we desire.
