Leicester 1-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

The Adama on the left thing is a good idea, completely agree that he should be driving forward in central areas, it causes chaos.

plus Semedo is better without Adama taking his space.

Was watching the re-run of us vs Boro the other day on Sky and Adama was on the left in the second half where we just kicked him for 45 mins. He linked well, cut inside and actually released the ball rather than head down running.

He's not always going to have the freedom that Palace proffered him. I can see how the penalty happens but I don't think Marçal makes the same error.

I think the biggest thing today was if two of your front three are horrendously off form (as they were) and they're pretty much the only attacking players you have on the pitch, you're up against it. These things happen, you could argue that Podence could have come off at HT as absolutely nothing went right for him today, when it's not your game then it's not your game.

I think we've only ever played Adama on the left once - Brighton away when we lost 1-0. Now he was shit that day but I think it's worth a go to have him driving inside. We can't play him actually up front as he hardly ever scores but I want him in more central areas and linking properly rather than being a crossing machine.

Would that stitch up RAN a bit if he had Traore in front of him? I think we'd have to look closely at Saiss, Kilman or Marcal behind him rather than a talented but raw youngster.

He wasn't horrendous, IMO, but you have to accept some inconsistency from a kid his age.

I can't believe I'm ten years older than him...
And I can't believe I'm fifty years older than you!

Watched the game late this morning (Oz time) and a bore draw was probably the fairest result. Dubious penalty aside Leicester didn't threaten all that much, but neither did we - can't recall one clear cut chance from Wolves although it was a magnificent save from Schmeichel to deny Neves.

I know the lack of pre-season and the unusual circumstances of how this season is being played is having an effect, but we've only scored 8 goals in 10 competitive games this season (9 EPL and 1 LC) - I think Jota has nearly scored the same amount for Liverpool.

The simple fact for me is that we're a boring team to watch.

When you have to get up in the middle of night (around 2am) to watch our games, it's a very hard stretch to do this when we're playing like this most weeks, so I no longer bother (despite doing it for the last 2 seasons) and catch the replay when I get up.

Yeah, I'm disappointed.

But at the end of the day, whilst we weren't brilliant up front to say the least, and Raul and Podence didn't exactly have the best of games; it's also fair to say that we nullified Leicester. It was also clear that precisely nothing dropped for us in the final third - but then how much of that was luck and how much was off-form forwards is a different question.

Semedo did pretty well, and RAN, Kilman and Fabio will only get better for the experience. The lack of Vitinha is a little mystifying mind.

It's a shame that Nuno had a decent chunk of time with the players before this and we actually regressed a little from the Palace game.

Hopefully the next couple of weeks (even with the International disruption) will bear more fruit at the end

I don't know, without going all Cyber, we seemed to play better with minimal preparation, like the games after a European game last season :)
I'm sure someone has stats to disprove my ramblings

Logged off after the match and thought I would sleep on it before commenting in here.

Yesterday's performance doesn't get much better this morning with a clear head, I'm afraid!

I think it's ok to be slightly concerned at the 'goals for' column, because we haven't really had a glimpse of what the long term plan is to get more goals from this side. We all acknowledge that we have talented footballers (we do), but yesterday, not for the first time this season, the front three looked like they were playing together for the first time. Raul & Podence were utterly appalling, and Neto was the only one who gave us some sort of spark, but again, found himself trying to do too much and running in to blind alleyways or off the pitch completely. As has been noted by others, Neto's set pieces were rubbish too.

If you go and watch the match again, just have a look at the movement from the three of them off the ball when someone like Neves, or Donk, or Boly, or Kilman has it. Those players are desperately looking for someone to pass the ball to, but Neto, Raul & Podence just stand still. It's not good enough. What ultimately ends up happening is, because they have no movement from the three advanced players, they have to play it safe - sideways or backwards. It's so bloody predictable. Del summed it up perfectly yesterday -

"We're so bloody easy to defend against. Watch the back five ponderously pass it between them. If the move crosses the half way line, fast press and we'll shit ourselves. Repeat, until the ball finds one of the quick lads, hope he can beat 3 three men and find Raul in between 6 or 7 Leicester players".

If we can all see it - and we can - why can't Nuno? And if he can, why aren't we doing something about it? It's not the first time it's happened this season - arguably bar a couple of games where the opposition has been quite open, it's happened every game.

This whole idea of keeping it tight and aiming for a clean sheet over anything else needs to be binned off ASAP. Of course, it's important to be solid at the back - but the way football is in it's present state - with dodgy VAR decisions in practically every game, we just need to let the handbreak off and try to actually attack teams and score goals because otherwise something like yesterday happens and we have no control over it. Even Liverpool/Klopp have acknowledged that - I think they've kept one clean sheet all season, but score 2/3 goals a game and that gives them more chance of winning games. I know it's unfair of me to compare us with Liverpool, but it's more that other sides/managers realise VAR is having a huge impact on games that's out of their control, so they're just having a bloody go. No wonder we are being called "boring" by some.

Couldn't believe it when I saw the table this morning and Palace are above us. They were absolutely terrible. Looking at how kind our run of fixtures were at the start of the season, against how difficult our upcoming run looks, I can only see things getting worse before they get better - although I do hope I am proved wrong.

We may perversely step up a level when faced with better opponents, but it didn't happen yesterday so it's more wishful thinking than based on anything I see in the team

On a completely separate subject, I'd like to see Coady's passing map from yesterday. I don't remember him hitting a single diagonal? Like I mentioned in the matchday thread, it was like the Palace match didn't happen at times. We seemed to abandon everything that was right about that performance and resorted back to the few games before that. Why? Was it the way Leicester set up, matching us up? Or something else?

As for the penalty decision, when Sky are somehow showing us footage of the VAR official getting a bollocking at half time for cocking up a decision, that tells you all you need to know about how much we can trust them to get key decisions right at the moment. Which loops back nicely to my earlier point of just having a bloody go. We've got no control over the idiotic decision making from the officials and VAR, so at some point you have to decide that attempting to score more goals than the other side is the better tactic, surely?

Leicester's wing backs were largely very tight to ours which cut out the switch to feet and Praet/Maddison backed that up by closing them down if we did look to utilise them. Semedo running beyond them was clever and he was found 3/4 times in good positions but had no support when he'd found the space behind Thomas/Justin.

Palace gave us the freedom of Molineux to exploit those wide areas which was lunacy.

If we're trying to be less predictable then we're clearly nowhere near that yet.

I'm still struggling to see exactly where we're going style-wise, but until we get closer to what Nuno wants we still need to ensure we stay competitive and have some threat. We certainly competed yesterday but we didn't look like we had much to hurt them with once they closed the flanks off

The commentators on my stream (and I think on MotD too) mentioned that despite having time to do so, Coady was unable to hit any diagonals as they option wasn't there.

I’m struggling how people can’t see the correlation with “we kept them at bay” and “but didn’t really trouble them”.

They didn’t need to over commit after they’d already scored after 15 minutes. Leicester knew that as long as they didn’t gift us anything then we’d struggle, pretty much like we are if we go 1 up. It’s also pretty easy for us to be solid if you’re always going to have at least 6 outfield players behind the ball. This leads to the front 3 playing terribly as they are so isolated and unable to maintain any form of possession.

And as we play the low block, If we ever do win possession you are limited to the quick counter as your whole team is so deep. This leads to Neto or whoever literally having to run into blind alleys as there’s no one to pass to. And then he runs down the alley he’s got even less options as the rest of the team haven’t pushed up with him. The rare instance we do maintain possession it goes all the way back to the start leading to an awful hoof forward and loss of possession.

I’m not really sure what “transition” there is. We still play low block but are now not even that effective on the counter.

The worrying thing for me, putting it in one simple sentence, is that right now we are far less than the sum of our parts.

Sheff United last year were a great example of a team that were far more than the sum of its parts. Man for man, are we worse than Southampton or Villa, who are both above us? Or even Leicester, who are top? But right now the team is about 50% of the sum of the individuals.

I think we're a team suffering from attempting to transition to a new style of play with no real time to do it - there hasn't been a pre-season, and we're knackered after a 13-month season last year (with a small break, admittedly) and a season this year that has been peppered with international breaks - isn't this one the third now?!

I'm not making excuses, I think yesterday Leicester just had us sussed: especially the wing-backs. We had them fairly sussed too, I can't remember Rui making too many saves. Just a shame about the two penalty decisions.

This is all fair, but isn't a big part of our 'transition to a new style of play' supposed to be about making us less predictable?

So cutting off the wing backs shouldn't neuter us in one fell swoop? We seem to have temporarily lost the benefits of the old 'style' but haven't replaced it with anything of note as yet

Absolutely mate - I agree entirely, but I imagine those are passages of play we would learn on the training ground in a pre-season for example. By February/March we'll be rocking and rolling I think: it may mean we finish 8th/9th/10th this year, but we're in no danger of being relegated.
