Just how good were/was/is/are (Wolves Edition)

I liked Muscat at the time but now I loathe players who deliberately try to hurt other players. It's a cunts way of being 'hard'.

And to be totally hypocritical it would have been useful to have someone like him when we played Bolton in the play offs.

This line is intentionally pointless

We can have anyone.

Don't mention them though in the middle of another discussion as this lot have no boundaries and they start rattling on, meaning it would then be pointless to do it properly later :)

I was there... My school mate and his brothers took me and the 3 of them were Bolton fans so I was sat with them. They did give me a lift back after so they got over Wolves stopping them from being promoted!

Because of that result Forest snuck in for promotion ahead of Bolton and 2 years later they were European Champuons

Norman Hunter was a nail but look at the plaudits he was given when he died. He wasnt called Norman ' bite yer legs' Hunter for nothing

I know it's a bit recent, but how good do we think Bakary Sako really was? With the benefit of hindsight and all that.

Great in the Championship. Not convinced he was anywhere near our current wing backs or wide forwards. Never proved himself in the top flight really as injury denied him the chance. I thoroughly enjoyed watching him play but he wouldn't even get on the bench now.

Gah. Please don't just keep throwing names in out of nowhere! Not how the thread works.

8. Don Goodman

Donald Ralph Goodman (born 9 May 1966) is an English former professional footballer who played as a striker.

His professional career spanned for nearly 20 years, during which he played nearly 600 Football League games and scored 162 goals.

Born in Leeds, Goodman played for Bradford City, West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sanfrecce Hiroshima, Barnsley, Motherwell, Walsall, Exeter City, Doncaster Rovers and Stafford Rangers.

He trialled with Bradford City as a teenager, whilst playing non-league football with Collingham and working as an electrician with Leeds City Council. Bradford City offered him an apprenticeship, which he turned down in favour of a non-contract deal.

He made his senior debut in May 1984, aged 17, and was still working as an electrician. He turned professional with the club that summer, but was allowed a day off every week for college.

At the age of 18, in November 1984 he scored a hat-trick for Bradford City within 7 minutes of coming on as a substitute in an FA Cup game against Tow Law Town.

On 11 May 1985, his girlfriend died in the Valley Parade fire disaster. He was playing for Bradford in that match, as the team won promotion as Third Division champions.

He was Sunderland's record signing in December 1991 when he was signed from West Bromwich Albion, the last signing of manager Denis Smith, who was sacked later that month. Goodman was cup-tied for Sunderland's run to the 1992 FA Cup Final.

Goodman joined Walsall in March 2001. At the end of that season Walsall were promoted via the play-offs and Goodman scored one of the goals in the final as they beat Reading.

As of April 2020 he was working as a pundit for Sky Sports.

I thought Goodman was a very good player for us. My best memory of him is serenading everybody on Queen Street at 2AM having come out of Chancellors/ Chambers.

He was a beast in the air and a physical presence all over.

Don's not a straightforward one for me. There's an argument to be made that we bought him as a bit of an unnecessary luxury when there were more pressing areas, also that it was very 90s of us to sign someone who was unlikely to ever hold/gain value over the course of his contract, and he had to play on the right for a while which was never his game.

Then when he was first choice up front, because he was so good in the air (especially relative to his height, he isn't that much taller than I am) we used to lamp the ball at him. He was pretty good at playing that role but it seriously wasn't the best use of him. Even so, 20 goals in a terrible team...then he gets an absolute shocker of an injury. Could have finished him. By the time he got back, McGhee was busy getting addicted to signing strikers and so he was always in and out right up until he left.

He probably wasn't at his peak for us, that would be at Albion and Sunderland. He was proper electric when he played for them. The pace was starting to go a bit when we signed him. He was on his arse a bit too often for my liking and had the Andy Mutch Offside Disease.

On the plus side - it's testament to him that he must have had 4-5 partners in his time here and always linked up well with all of them. Generally a very decent finisher, the Leeds goal is so well taken in a high stakes situation. He also told McGhee where to go when he tried forcing him into signing for Ipswich. I'll back anyone who gives him a bit of grief. Very noticeable how out of all his clubs - he speaks most fondly of Wolves. I think he's a very good commentator, don't understand when he gets stick off our fans, he isn't there to cheerlead for us, he's there to call the game as it is and I think he does it well. A really nice guy too.

Yeah I liked Goodman a lot, good footballer, great attitude, 100% every game. He also comes across as a decent bloke too, met him in my local a few months ago, he was very accomodating, was happy to chat and have selfies etc didn 't seem to be a chore to him

I remember us playing Sunderland and him getting absolute dog shit abuse for his ties to our local rivals.

He was playing for us the next season, an early lesson in the fickle nature of football fans!

I liked him as a player, thought he did okay for us. He was one of the regulars up the canal when I used to go up there on a Thursday, along with Keith Curle and a couple others who for some reason I can never remember.

I liked The Don, always thought he gave everything and knew how to look after himself. My only criticism of him is lets face it he dived. His reputation meant he'd have to be decapitated before he'd get a pen

He was almost decapitated and we didn't get a pen :)

Christ the sound of that will live with me until the day I die. Sickening.

33 games for Lipstick Darren and 32 for my mate Shabbs. Christ.

We'd sold Blades. And brought in Eric fucking Young. We'll have to have him in here at some point and I'll make those who liked him (whether ironically or not) admit it.

Actually Daley looks excellent in that video (other than his weird haircut). I can see why Taylor went for him. But take advice from people more qualified than you when they say "do not sign this man, he is broken".

Sold David Kelly too - I never understood that

We got decimated by injuries that season
