Just how good were/was/is/are (Wolves Edition)

Seriously? I think that's a tad harsh!

No. Really didn’t like him, I get that it’s nice and funny that he is ‘one of ours’, but he’s clearly a massive chopper.

I did really like Smith, so perhaps that coloured my view slightly.

We did really well out of that deal - Muscat and Freedman for Smith? Brilliant.

Muscat has ended up tarnishing his own reputation, he was a good player (certainly for the second tier) but no-one outside of Wolves is ever going to talk about that. He wasn't so much hard as sly and did pointless things.

Wrighty has got that story slightly wrong, it wasn't a scoring chance. Crossfield ball (not really anywhere near goal) and Muscat shouted "over". Still bad form obviously.

He was way, way, way better than Jamie Smith.

Muscat's behaviour at Wolves gets exaggerated by his behaviour at Millwall and Melbourne where he became a caricature of himself. He wasn't an angel, but wasn't as bad as someone like Robinson in his time with us. One of the best 3/4 right backs we've had in my time following the club

I was at Forest that day, Wright is speaking rubbish, the ball was going away from goal.

He didn't seriously injure Bellamy he was back a week or so later.

As for the Grimsby sending off, someone on The Old Gold Club (Butler?) said he knew he was going to get sent off before kick off he was too hyped.

The problem with him (or one anyway) was he deliberately set out to hurt people. It’s not like with Saiss for example where he just wants to stop play.

If he weren’t in football he’d have ended up as one of those really shit petty criminals and spent most of his life in and out of jail.

We were already starting to wobble before that Grimsby game anyway. No saying we'd have won if he hadn't been sent off, we didn't beat them away that season either. Obviously it was less than ideal but we had bigger problems at the time, like a manager never changing the team or tactics despite several players dropping off in terms of form and others running on empty.

Or "Australians", as we generally call them.

Don't see the issue with that. Plenty of players have talked about (especially Wrighty) how they kick, pinch and whisper insults in their opponents ear and it's all fine because 'it's on the pitch'. Muscats thing seems fairly minor in comparison.

Decent player who could've been much better if he wasn't such a twat. A prick as a person by all accounts too.

Yes, decent Championship fullback. Don't think he was ever PL quality. Liked to play the hard man off the pitch as well when he had company [the guy from Wednesfield Taxis and his mate spring to mind], but never quite as brave when he was on his own.

He was a decent full back. Lacked a bit of pace however. Possibly his hard tackling was his way of compensating for that.

Seem to recall him having a decent shot on him. Remember him hitting an absolute thunderbolt, was it v ipswich?

Equally, mark kennedy had him on toast when we played man city on the opening day of one season. Bazeley had to swap places with him to use his pace.

check this out. brilliantly worked free kick by Hibbett and Carr. Bobby Gould having to go in goal for last few minutes.

I was there... My school mate and his brothers took me and the 3 of them were Bolton fans so I was sat with them. They did give me a lift back after so they got over Wolves stopping them from being promoted!

Really liked Muscat when he first arrived, good RB and at first thought he was 'hard but fair' in the Stuart Pearce mould but within a short space of time he started to believe his own hype and I was glad to see the back of him in the end

Oh yeah, I think everyone knew it was time up regardless. He actually started to go backwards a bit the season before when Curle left in the summer and he got the captaincy. Wasn't quite the same.

This is DJ for you though, we had basically no proper back up for him 2001/2. Couldn't even pull our stock 2000s trick of putting any right sided centre half there. Decided that an ageing Sean Connelly would do, but of course he wasn't anything like a serious answer. So we had to go even further down that scale and sign an ancient Gunnar Halle. Amazingly enough that was not a proper solution either.

He could never ever ever build a squad properly, there were always holes in some positions and us being vastly overstocked in others. Very Steve Bruce-like in that respect.
