Just how good were/was/is/are (Wolves Edition)

Sold David Kelly too - I never understood that

We got decimated by injuries that season

Spoiler alert - you might find out the answer to point A more quickly than you think...

Injuries were ok. All of Thommo, Bully, Goodman, Stowell, Richards, Emblen and Star Signing Atkins played 30+ games. Osborn played pretty much every game from when he got here. Froggatt, de Wolf and Thomas didn't play much but they were broken anyway.

I suppose swapping him for Premier League winning midfielder wasn't a bad thing to do in principle

True, but if they'd played on sure we'd have gone up, I get confused about which season players got crocked in. Daley I think played a bit part this season too. That's a lot of talent not available

We were horrible in 95/96, we were never ever ever going up that year. Truly awful football. Lucky not to go down.

Taylor won 5 of his final 25 league games here.

Atkins and Osborn playing loads of games. That's your problem right there.

Loved super Don. Don't know why we signed him but I loved having him in the team. Always gave everything and he was one of those players who would have played anywhere. Bought me drinks in O'Neills (classy) once and happy to talk shit about football. Nice man.

Nowt wrong with O'Neills. Many good memories from there. Good pint of Guinness.

A loss to the town when it went. I'd take it a million times out of a million over the shithouse next door.

Actually Daley looks excellent in that video (other than his weird haircut). I can see why Taylor went for him. But take advice from people more qualified than you when they say "do not sign this man, he is broken".

He was excellent when he could move - he was even better v Derby. He did end up with a strange running style where he kind of limped really quickly.

IIRC, that game was one of the very few actually featured both Froggatt and Daley at the same time.

Yes, we thumped Derby and played really well (Don was excellent that night btw). They went on to go up automatically, we finished 20th. You would never in a million years have guessed that after that game.

YouTube embedding seems to have suddenly broken? Well, you'll have to live with the link. It's a tough old world.

Not that I suspect it matters that much. I try to put a bit of effort into the original posts (kind of how the thread works, or is supposed to work) but I'm not sure how many people even begin to read or watch them. I mean I did the Muscat one, including his goal vs Ipswich which even has the title "Wolves vs Ipswich 1998" and LJ (bless him) pipes up later saying "I remember a thunderbolt of his, was it vs Ipswich" :icon_lol:

Anyway. A lot of people forget that the famous Bully "became a Dad and then drove straight to Norwich after 0 hours sleep" game didn't have a winning goal by Bully. It was Don.

Heartbreaking bit of commentary at the start there - Ferguson 'almost joined Leicester over the summer.' I wonder how close he came? No, musn't torture myself...

That would have been McGhee as well! Fucking hell.

I don't remember anyone wanting to sign him off us tbh. Sparta Rotterdam did take him on loan in the end but they did not deign to sign him permanently.

Thinking back though. Summer 1995. We played Willenhall Town and I went with my Da and our kid as it was walking distance. We sent out a pretty much reserve team. Veno did some presentations but I don't think he played. It was your likes of Andy De Bont and Richard Leadbeater. Maybe a young Carl Robinson. Fergie did though, I know as I called him a fat prick when he went to take a throw right by us.

Maybe we were readying him for an exit. Damn you McGhee, seal the deal.

I remember being in an apartment in Spain and his cousin was in the one next door. She got really excited when she saw me in my Wolves shirt (like all the ladies) and told me her cousin played for them. I tried so hard to hide the expression on my face when she told me but I just couldn't do it. She looked quite a bit like him as well unfortunately for her.

At least she was supposed to wear lipstick.

Some prat off here once told me I had hair like Darren Ferguson. Their vengeance shall come, I don't forget things like that.

This is starting to get really upsetting.

He's exactly the kind of rubbish he would buy as well. Then talk about how great he was in training.

Right, I'm on the side of believing it now and I hate McGhee even more than I did 20 minutes ago.

Bear in mind Martin O'Neill built a quality Leicester team on a midfield of Robbie Savage, Muzzy Izzet, Neil Lennon and Steve Guppy. That's a top class midfield.

Mark McGhee signed Steve Corica for them (then took the wet wipe back for us) and wanted to buy Darren Ferguson, it seems.

Fucking hell. And we effectively had the choice of the two in 1995, and went the wrong way.

Yeah O'Neill is probably biggest 'what if' of the last 30 years.

I really enjoyed Alex Ferguson's autobiography but his insistence that Darren was comfortably the best player in our squad prooves that even the greatest coaches have blind spots when it comes to their kids.
