January 2022 Transfer Thread

Maybe we can get 2-3 loans in and with option to buy, january window is always difficult and more expensive to buy but maybe you can raid some clubs which now has bad economy due to Covid?

It's still been so long since we had a good transfer window. It's all well and good now as we are in a decent position but you can't stand still for long in this league before it comes home to roost. Looking forward to the accounts coming out so we can see just exactly what is going on.

Read it whatever way you want.

1) we aren’t signing anyone
2) we might sign some players if the lads on loan aren’t good enough
3) we will sign people but it won’t be many and only if the deal is right
Doesn't that go without saying ?

Well yes. But it was easier to say that than… if the player was available at lower than market value, better than what we currently have, fits into our wage structure and in a position of need.

Simple
Sluggish
Dismal
Doherty
?

Atletico after semedo to replace trippier apparently.

Maybe Doc is the replacement 😳

That statement is all well and good from Sellars from his point of view, however that doesn't change needing a backup or second striker that isn't Silva, decent outing or not recently it's important we have an option for 2 up top, change or rotation. The previous argument used to be no one will come sit on the bench, but Raul hasn't been at his best (understandable) and don't think you can make that case about another forward option not being involved. Don't want to get to a point with Raul where he is ruined from over playing and Silva isn't ready to step in.

If Jonny is back this month and Is the same player (I have no doubt that he will be), then if Atleti or whoever are offering £30m for Semedo, then with the clubs financial/strategic position I don’t see how we could turn that down.

That's a hell of a risk. Atleti would have to overpay for Semedo for us to let him go as we've no back up if Jonny isn't up to scratch.

Wingback is such a specialist positon. Semedo was 30million for a international calibre player, in his prime, who can play on his weaker side and was contributing close to 90 touches a game from RWB at the end of last year. Easily good enough for a side chasing Europa or in Europa etc.

I just don't get the idea he was expensive or has been disappointing when I watch him, had the odd bad game but even I'm those always felt like he was never the worst.

If I was a side like Newcastle and Wolves fans were in charge of the transfers and only wanted that outlay back for Semedo, that would be the first step to improving my side for me.

I did caveat it with “is the same player”.

I agree

But if Wolves need to sell to buy then I’m sooner selling Semedo, a 28yr old in a position we are well stocked than Neves, Neto, etc.

Don’t get me wrong, he’s for the most part playing at a really high level defensively and as I put in the Utd verdict I don’t think his lack of attacking output is his fault.

But We’ve already seen Hoever come in and play well (also some mistakes, but he’s only 19) and limited players like Marcal on then the other side maintain our defensive solidity as well as RAN. The transfer fee for those 3 combined is less than Semedo and I’d imagine their wages combined is too.

It was just a hypothetical situation assuming Jonny’s full recovery and a team bidding £30m. The way Wolves are run I can’t see a way they would turn that down for a non-indespensable player whilst also slashing £80-100k off the wage bill.

The idea that a players number of touches demonstrates effectiveness baffles me

I’d like to know what has gone wrong in the 16 months since we signed Semedo for £30m, that we need to recoup that money and reduce the wage bill.
We’ve not spent anything out of the ordinary or had a huge unexpected loss of income. We signed him when stadium’s were empty and we had no European football.

Two and a bit months until it's all revealed. I strongly suspect the answer is that nothing has materially changed other than their strategy. Unless we've paid back half the Fosun loans, there's absolutely no chance that we're not in significant profit.

I'm not sure how much light the accounts of 31 May 2021 will show us in terms of the transfer fees "war chest".

The accounts at 31 May 2020 show:
£27 Million cash
£25 Million owed to Wolves to be paid within 12 months
£128 Million owed by Wolves to paid within 12 months (including transfer fees of £54 Million)

That didn't leave a lot to spend last summer which I suspect will be a major reason for the lack of transfer activity.

From those figures, I don't think the cash generated in a single year's trading is going to make a massive amount available to spend. If, for whatever reason, Fosun does not give further loans I can't see there being much net spending for a while.
