Good people of Britain...........PANIC

That’s more likely what I could smell burning.
the only medieval moat in the Wolverhampton area never fills up after rain, was about four inches from the top and had people swimming in it this morning!
Ashmore park bottom shops if you’re wondering where it is.

Daughter lives in flats overlooking it, whole carpark had flooded last night.

Yeah me too, think it's a single mom, renting.

What I saw was a family of five with their own valeting company, no details beyond that. There is a valeting company up there, I saw it on the map last night and the go fund me was asking people to spread the word about their business.

We left Hereford for Cornwall on Saturday morning in a thunderstorm after 12 hours of thunder, lightning and floods.
It’s still raining in Hereford today. Thank God our house is on a hill.

Arrived in Bude and had a lovely two hour walk on the beach with the hound in the sun.
Went to Rock beach yesterday and had another two hour walk in the sun.
We are off to Crantock today. Weather is looking good.
It feels like we have made a great escape!

Actually, if they’re renting then the landlord should have the buildings insurance, theirs would just be contents surely? Still not great when you’ve got to replace everything admittedly but at least it’s not their bricks and mortar they’ve got to replace. Small consolation on the face of it but massive in the grand scheme of things.

Hopefully if they were renting the council will help them find somewhere. Absolute pisser about the belongings but at least everyone was safe. Just hits home how important home insurance is, so many people don’t have it because they never use it.

I Think as there are children and they were unintentionally made homeless the council have a duty to provide accommodation, probably some shabby hotel untill they find something more permanent.

I’ve no idea what the state of local authority housing is around here now but when I was looking to move from my flat into a house years ago there were always properties coming up. Given the situation (if the regs are still the same) they’ll go straight to the top of the list. It would definitely be temporary accommodation first I’d have thought but I doubt they’ll be waiting too long for something more permanent.

Tbh I'm not even sure that section of housing comes under the care of Wolves or Staffs council, council housings a nightmare to get into now around here, the majority of stock have been sold off under the right to buy.

I’ve no idea on either account, given the location though I’m pretty sure Wolverhampton Council couldn’t turn down the application. I know a lot of round here is private now but there are still a fair few council properties, how many are available is another matter altogether.

Wolverhampton Homes manages a lot of the houses in Kitchen Lane

‘Manages’ is stretching it when it comes to Wolverhampton Homes. They’re fucking atrocious. Or at least they were years ago.

Fuck me, any reports of anything happening in the Castlecroft area?

Funnily enough the mother-law just went through a similar house fire experience last month. She’d sold her place in Hertfordshire and was moving to a new build in Congleton which was about 9 months behind schedule, so she put some stuff into storage and moved into a local rented flat to bridge the gap.

The flat upstairs catches fire and torches everything in her flat too (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1epdv8g54wo). The landlord will have buildings insurance but as with all tenants private or otherwise she’s responsible for the contents insurance and in failing to do so effectively loses the possessions she took to that property. No idea what the obligations of any authorities would be in that situation but I guess she’s fortunate in having a family member offer to shoehorn her and her partner into their place for a little while with at least an end game a few months down the line.

Interesting that the police are publicly stating arson. As an active investigation they are being careful with their words but it’s well know the flat was being used as a cannabis farm. Anyway, the dangers of having no insurance. Just not worth the risk.

Is it ignorance (I don't mean that to sound harsh) or choice why some people don't have contents insurance?

there is arguably a lack of financial literacy related to why people don't have it. It's something many may "get around to one day" and never do. I also suspect the perception is it is less significant for renters as the LL needs to insure the property/bricks/mortar.
Remember working for a housing assoc and we had a fire in a property xmas eve. family got out, and we moved them into alternative accommodation, and the HA gave them £250 (it was over 10 years ago mind, so 250 would get you a fair bit!)
There is also the fact that it simply isn't affordable, or is way lower on the list of priorities.

Choice in most cases it think. I was just talking to Helen about this and it turns out she doesn’t have any either which I was surprised about as she worries about everything. She’s of the opinion she has nothing valuable anyway, I tried to tell her that everything is valuable if you lose it all and can’t replace it.
