Giro d'Italia / Tour de France

So we are under way. Not a great time trial by Quintana. Might be a chance for the other favourites to get some good time on him unless it rains later.

Froome and Contador are both under way. Only Cancellara can surely catch the best time of Rohan Dennis. Going to be a good finish to the day, especially as Froome can try and chase down Contador to get a good time. Still waiting for Nibali to start as well. Thankfully no rain.

Looks like Nibali pinched a couple of seconds from Froome, who pinched a couple from Quintana, who pinched a couple from Contador.

So, who is your tip to win Pad?

I know Stoo will be rooting for Froome.....

Where did Dennis come from? Outstanding ride, even Cancellera looked stunned. All the GC boys looked good in some of their weaker discipline.

All pretty close in the end there but that's no bad thing. Surprised Nibali was the strongest of the big 4.

Really hard to call. You could make a case for Froome having the psychological advantage over Nibali after the Dauphinee, but you just don't know of Nibali deliberately left a bit in the tank there. Contador looked fantastic in the Giro and nobody knows about Quintana as he has been training on his own in Colombia and has stayed well out of sight. It is going to be really hard to split the top four and I still think Van Garderen isn't out of it either. I ever so slightly favour Froome and Contador to be the top two, but no idea in what order!

I expect Geraint Thomas to have a big race, BTW. He won't win as he will be working for Froome, but I think he can break the top ten. Bardet and Pinot will be good for the French as well.

I don't think Contador will win the TDF. El Giro will have taken too much out of him. I would love him to win, but I don't think he will.

He's a cheat and always will be, like Gatlin in the Athletics his wins will always be hollow.

I think Contador will win and to be honest part of that is based around what Johnny said above. Watch him recover spectacularly from his Giro efforts....

Today might be a bit of fun. Exposed coast roads. Could be some nice splits in the peloton, so the teams will be trying to keep the favourites as near the front as they can. Could make it very congested and I wouldn't be surprised if there are crashes.

As I thought. A crash has split the peloton. I wonder if a favourite has been caught out. I can see Rafal Majka in the rear group but I think Contador is still in the front. Plenty of Sky at the front so I think Froome is in the front group.

Oh - Quintana, Peraud, Valverde and a couple of others have missed the split. EDIT - Nibali and Dennis have missed it too. In a second group at 20 seconds. The Quintana (with Bardet in it too) group are further behind. The gap isn't huge but the work to bridge it could cause problems for the big boys later. I think Froome and Contador are going to push this to try and nick a decent number of seconds.

Van Garderen in the front group with Froome and Contador. They have a gap of a minute already. This could be a big moment very early in the grand boucle.
