The fucker played the long game with us

Weeks spent perfecting our defence to suit Brentford....

What GON had to say about this joker Jack Wilson who if you look at his Linkedin profile has only ever been an assistant:

Jack Wilson has left Manchester City to become Wolves’ first dedicated Set Piece Coach.
The Scot joined City in November 2022 as First Team Performance Analyst for Set Pieces, working closely with Set Piece Coach Carlos Vicens to provide “actionable insights”.
He had previously worked for Brentford as Assistant First Team Performance Analyst for two years, as well as for the Irish FA, Hearts and Dundee United. The Bees are the pioneers of specialist set piece coaching and analysis.
Wolves Head Coach Gary O’Neil said: “Set plays are a huge part of the game now and the numbers we managed to achieve on them last year were good, but I was fortunate enough to meet Jack and look through some of his work. I don’t meet too many people who go into as much detail on gameplans as I do, but Jack is one of the closest I’ve ever met to being as extreme in his detail.
“I’m delighted to be able to take him from Manchester City and he’ll be a huge asset to us. The fact we got him in early, for the whole of pre-season, is important for the boys because we’ve started to do a little bit of work and it will start to stand us in good stead for the season.
“He’s got some really interesting ideas around set plays and how things should be done. Last year, as a coaching team, you work hard on set plays, but you all have other roles and jobs you need to fulfil at the same time, but Jack’s focus can be purely on set plays. His purpose is to make Wolves better at set plays and he can knuckle down and get into the details, and the players have responded well.
“If you stand still for a moment in football, you get left behind quickly because it’s moving on tactically. People are trying to gain small margins and it’s important we do what we think we need to do. It’s a fantastic one for the club to get done.”
City advertised on TGG Jobs in June for a new Set Piece Analyst. The remit was “to lead Set Pieces within the Performance Analysis department, delivering reliable analyses to the Set Piece Coach which enables actionable insights for all coaches and players.”

'Actionable insights' my arse. You mean someone taking charge, looking around and shouting to someone to mark somebody tight? We used to do that in the Wolverhampton Sunday League and then after the match someone might have another 'actionable insight' and suggest which pub we would go to.

At GBP 27.54 this package below might have been more effective. Mind you I can't see many football players being able to internalise up to 60 set piece variations. No wonder our players have looked confused.

Did anybody see the thing from James Collins recently talking when him and Dunne signed for Villa and what Martin O'Neill said!? It's NSFW for anyone searching for it!

Think it's originally from Under the Cosh.

It's this kind of drivel that does people no favours.

It's as much a load of bollocks as the deleted GoN rubbish.

Arteta and Maresca were only Assistants at City and are doing OK. It's not a role many teams will have lower down the pyramid so for a club like ours you either give it to a none specialist like Brentford have with Andrews or you promote someone from a larger club. It's not worked out, but that's not because of his background

For all the sneering and laughing at this set piece guy (and believe me I have been part of that). It shouldn't be missed that other teams seem to have spotted this and then adapted to what they have seen as a clear weakness.

I have to only just had a quick look at the stats this evening, but goals and shots from corners are now increasing and have done for the past two seasons, and more and more teams are going for the back post. This was one of the better written pieces that some may enjoy. So does seem we have missed a trend potentially and made ourselves vulnerable.

"One key difference, though, is how many more of the corners aimed to the back-post zone resulted in shots. Of the corners where the first contact was at the back post, 25.8% were turned towards goal compared to 13.2% at the front post and 12.2% in the centre. Almost two times as many of the corners where the first contact was at the back post were converted into goals (3.1%) as corners to the front post (1.6%) and to the middle of the goal (1.5%)."

How much of that do we account for?

That is for last season the data. We will have had an impact on this seasons as let on 3 goals in the same manner despite it being so early in the year you would imagine the stats for back post is higher due to us.

Doesn’t look like there’s been much interest in Brighton away yet from ASTs. Another one that may well end up going to general sale.

Just got rid of my Brighton away tickets.

Maybe shameful but I honestly can’t handle it at the moment.

EMF have three gigs in and around Brighton so fuck Gary O'Neil's barmy army.
