Problem is when people start acting as though Covid-19 is akin to the bubonic plague. If it didn't kill people who are old or have underlying, no one would have batted an eyelid. Once all the vulnerable are vaccinated, the worst that's likely to happen to those still waiting is not much worse than a bad cold. (And, yes, I know there are exceptions, which is why I said likely. It's not likely I'll fall downstairs and kill myself today, but someone, somewhere will.) I've every sympathy for the extra workload, but trying to portray the classroom as some kind of existential biohazard is OTT imo.

We need to keep cases managed until we've done all 9 groups imho.

2. No PPE of ANY kind in primary schools (just open some fucking windows, eh?)

3. Staff in small rooms, with 30+ other households, little to no possibility of social distancing with 5-9 year olds, they don't do it.

I get it. You don't think it's fair that they should get the vaccine before anyone else. You want your kids back in school because you're sick of having them at home. You have completely been bought by the Tory media machine hype that cranked into overdrive demanding schools reopen.

I was assuming you were suggesting teachers should be given more PPE.

I assumed they were wearing a mask (why wouldn’t they be?). So I asked what extra you’d like them to be given? Is is just the kids wearing masks too?

JCVI does not favour prioritising key workers in phase two of vaccine rollout, MPs told
Labour’s Zarah Sultana asks Prof Anthony Harnden, deputy chair of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation, if the JCVI has considered prioritising teachers for the vaccine.

Harnden says the JCVI is only an advisory body.

He says it has considered this in the course of drawing up its recommendations for phase two (the vaccination programme for the under-50s). He says they have looked at this issue quite carefully. But he says the ONS data shows that teachers are not at any higher risk than other members of the population. Some other professions are more at risk, he says.

"So in terms of the disease, there isn’t a strong scientific argument to immunise teachers [unless they qualify by age, or underlying health condition."


FWIW I'd certainly be in favour of the likes of teachers, supermarket staff etc (i.e. those that have multiple general public touchpoints) being vaccinated before the likes of me who often goes days without seeing another adult human

Surely the reason for the prevalence in 5-12 year olds is because children are still attending school due to keyworker commitments? They are mixing far more than any other part of society.

So, has this caused an increase in teachers who are teaching these children to suffer more negative consequences?

You also underplay how effective ventilation is in reducing risk.

Where are you getting your food from? Your deliveries? Your takeaway coffee & food? Those people have been working all the way through and are generally on minimum wage with pretty much no PPE.

I am a former teacher too and still have plenty of friends who are teachers - its not fuck teachers, its just that they are no more at risk than others.

Teachers do not wear masks, no. Only when having possible contact with other adults such as at the school gate.

Edit - so you want them to have more PPE (there is literally nothing beyond a mask), but they don’t wear the PPE they do have.

Masks are there to protect others though - if teachers only come into contact with others wearing masks then they are protected.
