Coronavirus

They've also said a child without access to a laptop is classed as vulnerable so they can attend school too. 2 birds with one stone there.
That’s the rub thought isn’t it, do we let that child stay home and get behind, possibly irretrievably behind, the other pupils? If that’s the alternative then yes they are vulnerable.

Of course. But my point is that it's a handy get out for the Government to not have to actually invest in the gaping digital chasm that disaffects huge numbers of students.

Also, I don't think parents are largely aware of this. If every student that doesn't have unshared access to their own device came into school, then you might as well keep them open! How many families do you know where every school age child (and I'm talking Year 1 upwards) has their own laptop or tablet? Even if it was say 30% of students coming in, how do you staff that effectively with groups being split between school and home. That's more and more staff having to come into school too, which goes against the whole ethos of lockdown.

I don’t disagree - our kids high school get around this by children who come in sit at a pc and do the same remote learning as those at home, but in school.

I don’t know what the solution is, but I do know doing nothing (literally in some cases, as our kids primary school did in the first lockdown) is not acceptable, particularly for children from poorer or disadvantaged homes.

Deaths now over 80,000 but the BBC using this headline

UK reports more than 80,000 deaths

for a second I thought that was todays number!

Don't forget MP's were offered upto £10,000 more to claim on expenses in order for them and their staff to work from home whilst doing nothing about said chasm.

So, the media (well the DM) turning their attention back to the Scientists for things to wind people up with.

Latest breaking news "

"Jonathan Van Tam went for a curry on same day Boris Johnson told Londoners to avoid restaurants due to Covid risk - then claimed the £21.77 meal on the taxpayer"

So, back in March when Boris didn't tell places to close but told people not to visit but if you do be sensible but don't go and the places don't need to close, a man who doesn't live in London, working for the Government took a break after starting work at 7am to get a meal on his own and rightly claimed it back as he could and in the words of the paper "His dining experience on March 16 did not break any Government rules"

What is even the point of this story? Man does his job and breaks no rules. SACK HIM NOW

Was this after the train had left the station?

Me mom has her first vaccine on 12th, second one on 31st March. In Birmingham, was either Birmingham or Bristol!
Cancelled these. Found out that a place 5 minutes away from me is opening up as a Vaccination Centre at the end of Jan. Postponing for a couple of weeks isn't gonna make that much difference to my mom, who has very rarely left the house anyway since last March.

With Hancock saying they expect every adult to have been offered the vaccine by Autumn, I would say they are hugely confident the J&J vaccine is not far off from being approved

The government has no excuse here, they have been aware of the digital divide for years and coronavirus has brought it into sharper focus. No matter what the government said, there was always a possibility that schools would have to close again. They were warned in September that there was very other options open to them if schools remained open and the emergence of a new variant compounded the issue further.

Rather than spending the last 6 months putting in place contingency plans to keep schools open, the government has done nothing more than talk about it.

We opened hospitals in days, developed a vaccine inside a year, furloughed millions of people and gave billions in contracts without proper tendering...but couldn’t provide devices and internet access to every child that needs it.

This government is shameful. They have failed the youngest generation and sacrificed the older generation because they are incompetent and corrupt.

They said 20000 deaths would be a good outcome. They promised a word class test and trace system. They said they would protect the NHS to save lives. They said they would do whatever it takes.

They have failed and continue to fail.

I don’t disagree with any of that at all, but we are where we are - failing a whole generation of children should not be an option.

Rate in Stafford has gone from 260 per 100k a week ago to 561 per 100k today. Guess a lot of those are from pre-lockdown but it’s not a good sign.

FWIW the Zoe data is starting to show a decline in the number of daily infections

Stafford often seems to have similar numbers to T & W. We are at 507/100,000....about 2 weeks ago it was 140/100,000

We are up to 355 per 100000 in Dorset just now - that may sound low compared to some areas, but seeing as how we were at 41 per 100000 2 weeks before Christmas it's affecting everywhere.

As I am older already know people who are getting their first vaccine early next week
