Coronavirus

It's all thoroughly depressing and as a start up business (Nov 2019) I have had zero help.
Sorry I lied, I had the chance to get into a shit load of debt at good rates of interest.
The wife opened a shop in late January 2020 she's had a similar lack of help.

One son runs a Ltd Co and no help (other than loans which he doesn't want) apart from a lovely lady at Mole Valley Council who coached him through the questions to check thet they were entitled to a grant - they got it with her help.

Without that all they would have received is a bit of business rate relief which wasn't going to seriously reduce their £7000 per month expenses (has got a defferal on VAT & Corporation tax, but will still have to ultimately pay those).

I’m not sure how the public can be blamed too much. The government approval of Cummings’ rule breaking and his subsequent piss take of a press conference made a mockery of the guidelines. The PM then told us to go to pubs and restaurants and tried to end working from home. Cabinet ministers have spent the last two months pretending that opening schools has no effect on transmissions and they seem to have avoided following the scientific advice as much as possible.

I know who I blame for the mess we’re in.

Anybody who is PAYE can be furloughed, are the business owners not PAYE?

And each business should have had £10k grant in March/ April?

You cannot surely be still using what Cummings did as an excuse for mass gatherings, basically people have very little common sense and even less comprehension of the consequences of their actions, people are putting more stock in getting pissed than others dying, look at the scenes in Liverpool recently, but no lets not blame them too much eh?

England Rugby game has finished and here he is...

Christ can’t even fit the slides to the screen size.

My son and his partner run it as a Ltd Co and only pay themselves the max tax free allowance on a PAYE basis - rest comes out as dividends (which aren't covered).

If they had furloughed themselves would have only received £600 pm which wasn't going to cover that much. They made more by keeping the business open even though trade dropped by at least 60%.

As to grants got one of £25000 but as said only due to the good offices of a person at the local council so that they could fit the criteria to qualify.

I agree, the general public has a lot to answer for. You can have all the lockdowns you like if people choose to ignore/bend the rules then, they will not work. I think the Government, also, need to be held to task for not being more forceful enough in applying these measures. The absolute morons partying in the streets when the pubs shut should have been dealt with and nipped in the bud. Water cannons would have been my weapon of choice. The vast majority of " joe public " will not take all this seriously unless they lose someone close to them or someone close to them get the virus and suffer long term effects.
We can't. The 3 Johnson bought when Mayor of London didn't work and had to be sold for scrap

So running off dividends and not paying yourself properly is running a business at a loss and so unsustainable.

To get that grant it must be classed as retail and so it was an 80% furlough and only tapered in Sept/ Oct.

I have sympathy as I too run a business and I feel for self employed the most as they really were shafted.

I think the govt have done a lot for business throughout this pandemic.

It's the mess they're making of tiers, lockdown and giving out contracts to their mates that they should be taken to task on.

They are retail but for whatever reason weren't classified properly.

They take the majority of income via dividends as can never know what level of income they can achieve year on year so pay a basic rate through PAYE as it would not make sense to pay more on a week by week basis. The business (in a normal year) doesn't run at a loss.

- Mood among Tory MPs is seriously bad. Even those who think this is the right thing to do now are dismayed that it’s come to this. “Shambolic. Rudderless ramblings. constituents getting in touch furious or in tears.” “Grim grim grim” “I think it could be his Suez”

- Cabinet ministers didn’t know that furlough was being extended or that “Stay At Home” was back until they saw it on the TV.

- Conservative minister: “The incompetence is another level. Is this a deliberate destruction of the Tory Party? People only vote for us because they think we don’t care, but are competent. Lose the competence and we’re fucked. We’ve lost the competence. And we are fucked.”

- Another minister says: “The science seems sound. The comms in the lead up to this was shocking. What’s the point in having a tight, intimate decision making group when it leaks like a sieve?”

- There is also scepticism among Tory MPs about the scary charts from Whitty and Vallance. Is the data driving the decisions or are the charts being rustled up to justify decisions?

-On “this could be his Suez” a Tory gets in touch to point out that this is what Cummings used to say about May and Brexit. He’s now presiding over something much worse

-Several Tory MPs have independently claimed their local areas have low case numbers but county officials wanted to go into Tier 3, so rustled up some scary charts. True or not, shows trust is broken down locally as well as nationally

-Mar 19: Turn tide in 12 weeks May 17: “Near normality” by end of July July 17: “Significant normality” by Christmas Sep 9: “back to normal by Christmas” Oct 23: “some aspects of our lives... back to normal" by Christmas TONIGHT: very different and better by spring

Going well isn't it

I genuinely think he didn't plan to say the Stay At Home bit.

That sounded very "The Thick of it"

I did read that in Peter Mannions voice tbh

Do you need a transport Manager, Plant Manager, Import / Export Manager?? Exceptionally cheap and willing to sleep my way to the top !
Speaking to one of our logistics suppliers yesterday and he said that transport companies are crying out for shipping/export clerks and salaries are increasing because demand is so great. Is that something that you could do Paul? His company are based in Felixstowe but I would imagine that the demand is all over the uk.

Yes no problem at all, the issue with the job is Brexit is looming and nobody knows, still, what is going to happen with regards to procedure (the last government paper on this was 220 pages long !) Procedures I put in place at my last employer where null and void six months later as the government changed its mind, I think people are loathed to enter a profession where you will literally get thrown in the deep end imminently and I think a lot of companies are expecting these people to know what to do, and nobody does.

My big concern is that this lockdown will do nothing, cases seem to have stabilised this week and that could be due to half term.

We won't know for at least 2 weeks if this has been successful or if they need to shut education too and by then the damage will have been done
