Coronavirus

101 per 100k in Stafford, but it was below 50 the week before [emoji51]

I wouldn't shut Universities down, but I would reduce the student population attending and in the location by a considerable number. None practical degrees should be online only, 2 weeks of self isolation and then go home for the Winter. Those which are practical need to be looked at on a case by case basis. Can semesters be moved around so theory based ones are worked on this year? If so they go home as well. More difficult for final year students so they need to be prioritised.

It's A Levels rather than a degree, but my daughter has already been told by college that the practical areas of Media and Music will all be in Year 2. Not perfect, because she'll be learning the exam based stuff and then not touching it for a year, but the plan makes sense.

Greene King planning to close 79 venues.

Possible Scottish restrictions, sounds absolutely awful.

sent home from work, as I seem to have developed a cough. Not a persistent cough, just a tickly cough.
As I am sharing an office, my colleague was understandably jumpy about it, so I asked to go home.
Now self isolating for the third time - in march was advised by a student they and their family had it (student came to meet me after having been advised to self isolate the fucking idiot). Did so again recently when mrs jelly lost her sense of smell/taste and had a test. Now it begins again. Will look to book a test this evening.

Oh, and students fundamentally are not following guidance and distancing in the main. saw gangs of them grouped in more than 6 today. a colleague saw 7 of them get into/out of a lift that has a max capacity currently of 2.

Was in York the last couple of nights and was quite surprised how surprised the nightlife seemed to be. Obviously exceptional times but I'd have though there'd be many more people about in the evening trying to find something to do, especially as a two university town. Don't think any restaurant we passed would have even been 50% full and no more than a handful of people in any pub we walked past, zero groups of studenty types milling about anywhere we went.

My neighbour was in York the other week and reported exactly the same!

What's a surprised nightlife?

We've had a few confirmed cases at our work this week. Things are starting to get very twitchy.

One that's autocorrected from being suppressed.

Just got off the phone with my father in York. He's 90, so not into nightlife, but what was surprising is that the virus is all he wanted to talk about. Normally he avoids the subject, but apparently his grandkids and great-grandkids are surrounded by it so he is becoming quite concerned.

OK so my top tips are to complete the full process and leave the browser open. once you get to the bit where it selects 'walk through' or 'drive through' don't close or refresh, just click between the 2. slots seem to be released at 8pm for the morning and 11am for the afternoon. went online at 8, and managed to book a test for tomorrow morning round the corner from the house. Slots were becoming live whilst we were completing the process!

The form tells you that householders not displaying symptoms aren't eligible for a test.

.
re-quoting the above, as it seems to remain spot on.
test booked down the road for tomorrow morning.

Looks similar to the restrictions we have in place at the moment, of anything ours are more severe. That is Level 3 for us, but looks like it is not enough, fairly safe bet that we will be heading to Level 5 basically full lockdown again fairly soon.

Nottingham has cases approaching 500 cases per 100k yet no local lockdown announced yet. Local leaders are calling for action from government and putting out recommendations to the public but according to the news it may be next week before an announcement is made.

Newsnight is reporting that a 3 tier system of special measures to be announced on Monday.

It's basically:

- More or less full lockdown, not far off what we had March-June
- Pretty much what we (inexplicably) have in Wolves right now
- The current "main" rules

Which again, seems pointless.

And they still won't answer the question on what the threshold is to enter such measures - as you've illustrated with Nottingham - or how you ever leave (Leicester is now over 100 days I believe, still no sign of an exit).

Kuenssberg being briefed means it's going to happen but the thing is this time people will not just go "ah, that's the way it has to be". They just won't.

I live on my own. I see THREE people socially in the entire world at the moment - my Dad (63, in good health, no underlying conditions), my younger brother and my girlfriend. They all also live alone. You want to stop me from seeing any of them then you'd better have a fucking good reason, not "just because". I've got mates I haven't seen since February/March, I've seen my best mate once in that time and that hurts but I go along with it. I'm not prepared to stop seeing people I love and depend on, fuck off.

I've got bipolar disorder, you lock me away for no good cause then there are very likely to be consequences.

I don't see how you can control an increase in cases whilst keeping schools and colleges open and closing them is the one thing the Government have said that they won't do. Local lockdowns aren't working as in practice the rules don't make much difference to a lot of people. Can't go round someone's house, but you can go to the pub, it doesn't make much sense, It's a libertarian approach which isn't having an impact. You either lockdown closer to what happened in the spring - pubs, schools closed, shops properly social distanced or you don't bother imv. I think deep down they know that too, I also think they fear the reaction and the lack of adoption

I think that you will still be able to have a social support bubble. If you work it that you only go to your dad's and brothers house and that you and your partner see each other at yours and hers then nobody will ever know. It may not strictly adhere to the rules but like what Tony says the rules aren't working and the danger in terms of the spread of the virus are likely to be less in your situation than what is allowed.
