Coronavirus

Juts watched it again, he doesn't actually set a date for returning to work, just that you should be actively encouraged to do so, then straight away says the rules for unlimited outdoor activities starts on Wednesday, although the chart gives the impression these will happen on the same day.

I watched it and I suppose it was intentionally vague because going outside and dealing with this virus is not a precise science. It wasn't a brilliant speech in fact it was pathetic because it gave no sense of empowerment, was riddled with slogans, false sentiment and pre-programmed body language. In short it was patronising and did nothing to ease the hysteria - although if somebody hasn't even a vague idea as to what puts them at risk the mind boggles. It should have focused and shown what businesses who have worked through the virus have done (just to help reassure people). Rishi Sunak will soon annouce in detail what the phasing out of furlough will entail - cue more panic.

This hasn't finished yet

Further, in terms of death toll this is the eighth worst disaster in the history of the British Isles, only pandemics like the Black Death and Spanish Flu, various famines and the year without a summer after the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1816 eclipse it. Just a bit of flu though.

I said all along that given 80% have mild or no symptoms and given half the deaths have been in isolated areas like care homes it shows the UK government is complicit in the socio-economic disaster that is happening and will get worse. In fact from the WHO down it has been a complete and utter global fuck-up.

I'd never heard of the "year without a summer" before, just read a bit about it, fascinating.

It's amazing what a volcanic eruption the other side of Bali did to the UK population.

Starmer is very very good at killing by kindness. "The opposition is of course in support of the government in this, but could the prime minister please clear up this few tiny points", at which point he rips it to pieces clinically and points out all the inconsistencies of the last few days.

Just read (though not word for word) the Gov't document am still not that much clearer on what I can or can't do as to what it was yesterday.

Then again as an old bugger I shouldn't be going out at all I suppose so probably doesn't matter if I don't know whats being relaxed.

Question: how is British common sense different to common sense anywhere else in the world?

Is Scottish common sense different to English common sense seeing as we now have different guidelines?

So I can get in my car and drive West for some exercise but should I or should I not cross the border? Simple question from Starmer and I don't think Boris answered it at all.

Pretty clear to me on that point (not listening to Boris so can't comment on his answer). I can drive to Blackpool, Devon, Cornwall etc and have some fun on the beach, no problemo. I can't however drive to Cardiff to see my Son as the moment I cross the border I am in an area under different rules and my journey would be classed as non essential and I would be sent packing and maybe fined.

What's your point, again and again? So 28K died from flu over a 4-6 month period with no lockdown compared to about 40K over a 6 week period with a full lockdown.

Apple meet orange

My point is centred on a hysteria that will result in hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs and homes when 80% get mild or no symptoms at all and half of the deaths have occured in 'controlled ' environments. An extra 28k people dying in 2015 is a hell of a lot of people but the comparison with Sweden (no lockdown) is not as clear-cut as people think. I think my point is perfectly clear.

I hope that all those planning on going on long journeys to English beauty spots have strong bladders.

I read it as go out but be mindful of the virus and adapt. It seems so many people want Boris to hold their hands when much of it is common sense.

Arrange to meet him over the border in England.
