Coronavirus

Well, compared to the UK, Egypt has a larger population as I remember, but most of it is concentrated in Cairo and Alexandria. So that would suggest spread is easier if it gets hold. That is especially true for places like Singapore where the population density is mad.

There are cases in Nigeria. This would be absolutely rampant in a city like Lagos.

I am reading a lot about a 1 metre rule, i/e people must be at least one metre apart, so..... foottie goes behind closed doors and pre match handshakes are banned, then the balls goes into the box from a corner with 8 or 10 sweaty neanderthals flying into each other with the requisite amount of spit and snot, and then one side celebrates a goal in a heap of bodies........ makes the handshake ban look a trifle silly n'est ce pas?

I think the handshake thing is more of a statement than an actual preventative measure

Can I get a consensus before I potentially go back to work tomorrow?

I was off sick last Wednesday pm and Thursday with a headache & feeling sick. Went in Friday as felt better, Sat was ok but Sun felt a bit tired and quickly got out of breath when playing in the garden with the kids

Monday woke up feeling rotten and coughed up green / yellow stuff so off work again, off today as feeling better but not great and still coughing a bit. It seems to have gone into my nose & sinuses. I've maybe had a very slight temperature but nothing unusual like sweating or shivering or anything

Normally I'd go back in tomorrow as I know I'm recovering and will be ok but in the current situation I'm not sure. Thoughts?

With those symptons you surely need to get yourself tested

Don't worry the F.A. will be using VAR to check if any attempt to infect an opposing player was deliberate or not in a week or two.

That is exactly the symptoms I had back at the beginning of November. Wife got it only much worse towards the end of November.
Think you should get checked though by rights.

ha ha ha that\s exactly what i was thinking, but VAR will most likely fuck that up too.

I did the online thing and it said as I havent been in an area of significant outbreak and haven't been in contact with a confirmed case that I don't need to contact 111

The first diagnosed case in Jersey announced today after yesterday's confirmation of a diagnosis in Guernsey.

I receive queries like this daily.
The advice I'd give currently would be you shouldn't come in.
Admittedly, I'm not in HR, not advising staff, and the implications are different.

Unpopular does not mean it is a political decision, unpopular means that it is recognised that it will be difficult to enforce - we are not an authoritarian country used to authoritarian governments. Every restrictive action has a consequence that also has to be mitigated, ban attendance at sports events and people will gather in smaller numbers but in closer proximity in other venues...so maybe that means banning sporting events completely.

If, as it seems, it is likely that there will be restrictions placed on people then there needs to be as much consent as possible otherwise it will be left to the state to enforce those restrictions. We are in a softening up period, aware of what is going on elsewhere and subjected to going official dialogue that steers us in a particular direction. There will be a threshold of cases that determine decisions which is why they are spending so much effort mapping the spread. The more voluntary consent, the less enforcement that will be necessary and people won’t just give consent because they are told to do so.

I think you're rebutting a point I'm not particularly trying to make. In short, I disagreed with your initial assertion that mass gatherings weren't something to worry over much about. Now I'm adding that the reason they won't be banned (yet) is because the move would be unpopular rather than because there's no need to. Not making that move might indeed be the best thing for society because society appears to be incapable of taking the sensible course voluntarily and will throw its collective toys out of its pram if forced to do so, and with perhaps even more serious consequences than permitting mass gatherings/infections will have. I do understand the reasoning; I'm just disheartened by the need for it, and by the fact that other countries seem to have more faith in their own people's ability to comply.

Other countries have faith in the ability to comply as their leaders would find the lack of faith disturbing...

The countries doing the banning of mass gatherings have their outbreaks nearing or at their peak, whereas ours is a couple of weeks away.

We’ll do the same thing when the time comes

Thanks for this, you need to get referred by 111 though to go there

I'm going to work from home the rest of the week, I don't think anyone at work would appreciate me going in all sniffly and coughing everywhere

Very wise, hope you make a speedy recovery

Simple fact

You can lock down China. As the populace are fucking terrified of state retribution if they fail to comply.

You try and lock down Italy. Chunks of the populace get out before the lock, as do any visitors from other countries.

You try and lock down UK. As Italy, but a load of times worse as "British stiff upper lip" kicks in and people keep going to work or school or university or the pub or the football. IE - its completely ineffective.
