Every fucking time these grandstanding journalist cunts can’t just ask one question. Wankers.

How have Japan fared so well in all this? Don't they have a large percentage of older relatives living with large families all together?

New gig starting for me in the next few days. Helping deliver mail, fetch food/prescriptions, make a few phone calls where necessary. All through the local church after they pushed a card through my door earlier. I'm not religious in the slightest but this is a community thing, we have an alarming amount of old people here and they need help. If I as a relatively (!) healthy bloke can do a bit then I will. Not like I have anything else to do.

They're doing my fruit in, they either seem to ask questions about stuff thats already been answered or questions the experts have no chance of giving an accurate answer to or even questions I could probably answer....just justifying their existence

Good on you. Nice thing to do and good to be able put something back into society.

Good stuff.

Still waiting for my government volunteer activation email which is a pain but not surprising as they have been overwhelmed. However, looks like Squeeze is very soon heading into the "Paddy starts cacking it zone" expedited PPE training is fine for someone like her that has so much experience even if she hasn't been out there since not long before we got married. I can sense from her comments she thinks district is looking unlikely and she is heading towards plugging gaps in HDU at best, or at worst I really fear someone with her experience is going into ITU at New Cross.

I am getting a strange mix of proud and terrified.

Read a few things that allude to general cultural/lifestyle things over there slowing it's spread significantly. Without wanting to plunge into a world of stereotypes that would make Alan explode, things like wearing masks in public a lot more commonplace over there, people generally more courteous and less touchy feely and a generally quite disciplined that helps with adherence to government guidelines etc. are the sorts of things that I've seen alluded to.

Thats terrific

I can't imagine the publicised death numbers for Iran and China are remotely accurate tbh. Ours could be out by 20% or so given we've only counted hospital deaths. I think we'll hit the harrowing milestone of over 1000 deaths in one day by the weekend. Sickening.

Bilbrook update (I was out of soft drinks and drinking too many caffeinated drinks will just kill me by another method):

Quiet. Very few cars up and down the Wolverhampton Road. Maybe went past half a dozen people on the way there and back, two with dogs.

Papa John's seemingly open for outside the door collection and deliveries. The Chinese is actually open, you can go in and everything.

Co-Op was largely starved of supplies in terms of meat, tinned goods and still no pasta whatsoever but I wasn't there for that, so it's all good in the hood.

The masks are the key thing, or at least are the thing that people are increasingly zeroing in on to try and control for in ongoing studies of the spread. The current consensus in most places is that widespread mask-wearing isn't particularly effective - it can make people let their guard down and act more recklessly, people might think a mask makes touching the face OK, many people don't know how to wear them properly, etc. - but Japan is such an outlier there's a growing noise among researchers that it might be significantly underrated as a controlling measure. Especially considering we're dealing with a respiratory illness.

The other alternative is that the government was fiddling the figures to try and avoid having the Olympics postponed - their daily confirmed cases starting shooting up the day after the IOC made the call.

Wear one of the shit masks people are wearing out here and it makes call all difference bar stopping infection going out if you cough or sneeze. The big 3M fucks they wear in hospitals as staff, if it isn't knackering to wear it, it's fucked.

Also, you wear your little wafer thing once. And then put it on again, when you are wearing cotton wool against a stiff breeze. these things get compromised quickly if they are the weaker ones - hence one use throwaway.

Just do what Trump says and give them a wash after using...

I'd imagine the bigger benefit of masks it stopping infected people spraying it out with every cough or sneeze rather than preventing new people from picking it up. It's not as if it's airbourne and having that constant filter on your breathing is reducing your chance of picking it up.

Precisely right - the benefit is in spread if you have it, not in keeping the virus out.

Of course every bugger coughing and hacking like a bastard should be at home not at ASDA.

I guess for somewhere like Japan with fairly widespread use they see the benefit, transmissions become more infrequent as so many contain their outgoings. Not going to see much benefit with sporadic use as they don't prevent you picking it up when others have coughed and sneezed all over surfaces that are touched by others.
