Coronavirus

Just been informed that one of my cousins, James, has passed away. He had underlying health issues (suffered from COPD) but tested positive for coronavirus last week and passed away on Wednesday. Brings it really into focus! He lived in the Birmingham area

So, so sorry mate

'Hundreds of frontline NHS staff will be tested this weekend to find out if they have coronavirus.'

So less than a thousand? We have around 4000 ICU beds in the uk which run at around an 80% occupancy rates. Until the recent changes, ICU Nurses normally worked on a 1-1, or 1-2 care basis, which would imply somewhere between 3200 and 1600 ICU Nurses in the UK. Not taking into account Doctors, Anaesthetists and anyone else now coming into contact with Coronavirus patients, hundreds of tests is still extremely inadequate.

You could argue ' but at least we will get a picture of how many are infected' but I think we need a bit more than pretty pictures to protect the people who are putting their lives on the line so that others lives can be saved

Yeah, there could be more but it's a start. If we have a reliable antibody test it's a significant step forward

The article is all over the place too so there could be errors in it

Last nights Boris-less Boris Bulletin was full of political manoevring and question dodging.

When Michael Gove was asked ' Have the 3.5m tests we were told about actually been manufactured?' he replied We don't know which tests are reliable yet, so we're testing the tests at the moment but we will be giving antigen tests to hundreds of frontline NHS staff to see if they have got it.' Which would seem not to include those that have already HAD it.

And in reply to a question about the reduction in numbers of NHS beds that Head of NHS England Simon Stevens has overseen he responded by saying he was commited to increasing the number of beds and improving the NHS, which may be true. We are building 3 makeshift and temporary field Hospitals that will house over 10,000 beds and an addition of 500,000 volunteers to help the NHS will definitely improve it.

We need straight answers and we are getting the kind of swerve Ruben Neves would be jealous of.

Trump is reverting to type. Telling Mike Oence not to call governors who don't agree with his handling of the crisis. He's gone full Nero where people must kiss the ring or they'll be put to death. In this case it's Americans he's putting to death.

The video of him hanging out sharpies has made me laugh this morning. Moron doesn't cover it.

Thanks gents. No idea about funeral arrangements but what I do know is there is both no chance of me being able to get there and no chance my work would sanction me going.

Which part of that doesn't your socialist mind understand?

The tests are being tested so they are fit for purpose. They are currently being manufactured in the U.K. as the government does not trust the Chinese tests, particularly as Spain have just binned a load as they were less than 30% accurate.

You can't magic these things up overnight.

What don't you understand about the increase in beds? That's happening right now as you have written.

The question was "why did you reduce bed numbers" so the answer of "we are now increasing bed numbers" is a classic dodge.

So sorry to hear this Mike. Thinking of you and all your family.

Antigen tests to see if the virus is present whereas antibody tests are for immunity

So they're going to test frontline healthworkers to see if they have Covid19 - why don't they just say that? And that shouldn't be a development, that should be BAU now

I was under the impression they were doing antibody tests this weekend but they're not. Whether that's me misinterpreting things or the govt. being a bit obtuse? I had to Google some terms to figure it out

' The trouble with you <insert Political/Social/Sexual/Racial jibe /insert> isn't going add an awful lot to the discussion. Particularly if you insist on the type of behaviour being highlighted. Picking and choosing what to read and answer.

Someone requested that the thread not be politicised, which I have tried not to , and don't think I have. Facts is facts. The people currently leading the nations struggle against a global pandemic should, and quite rightly are being held up to scrutiny, it is their actions that are being closely looked at, not the party they represent.

'Which part of that doesn't your socialist mind understand?'. certainly IS politicising it and trying to create a flame war.

It's you're right to disagree with my opinion, but could you at least try and retain a little civility. I think the matters at stake, saving human lives, are slightly more important than defending political allegiances.

Seems everybody is doing their bit, except no reduction in energy prices while everyone is at home using up their kwh.

mrs jelly went to the shops this morning to fetch milk and a few other essentials (mainly fruit). She reported a lot less social distancing than the last time she went out a week ago. The way some people were behaving were, to use her words, frightening.

She's concerned, as one of her daughters has been in touch saying she has symptoms.

I've also just watched the postman go down the other side of the street - I've found I am spending a lot of time staring out the window. Repeatedly, he was knocking on doors to hand over the mail. At first, I was gobsmacked at how much this meant he could be exposing himself to risk/contamination. However he then went to 5 more houses, and knocked, and no-one answered. He popped the deliveries in their bins and put a note through the door. However, where the fuck are these people? They're supposed to be at home.

Well said.

Deaths to be below 6,000? According to imperial college

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-...s-latest-uk-deaths-cases-boris-johnson-tests/

(Apologies for the timing darlowolf)

I can't help but think that this is wishful thinking, unless a far stricter lockdown is put into place. Boozad said yesterday, planning for a potential 12000 body mortuary is staggering, and has to be a severe wake up call. I will be amazed if the 6000 figure is met. I fear that 12000 will not be enough.

As a counter to your wife’s experience, M&S in Rugby was quiet, with everyone being very respectful of spacing - much better than last Sunday’s bedlam at Tesco.

Also.. Im seeing/reading ebay sellers being lambasted for still flogging stuff and putting pressure on the Royal Mail.
My postman delivered a shitload of nonsense leaflets yesterday!...one for fucking double glazing.
IT seems ok for adidas etc to be having sales on shit, think we need a one size fits all for anything that impacts the Royal Mail.
As an aside, i live near an ambulance station and the constant blues & twos and front room lighting up at night has really subsided.

The social distancing measures seem to be working quite well in Morrisons. Sure, you have to queue to get in but that isn't a great hardship, and most customers are doing their shopping in a way that allows both themselves and others to observe the two metres.

Of course there are a few dingbats, but you just have to step away from their ignorance.
