Obviously its not good that you are stuck on a ship with confirmed cases, but playing the sympathy card about your son being at home doesn't sit well with me.

"I had to tell my youngest child I'm not coming home and I don't know when I will be. He was so upset - he's only eight and we're his special guardians so he doesn't deal well with things changing, it's heartbreaking."

I bet he took the news that you leaving him at home and going to the other side of the world without him well then?

Yes because having a week's holiday away from the kids is exactly the same as being away from them whilst stuck on a virus incubator for an indeterminate amount of time.

Beyond closing schools and thinking about playing behind closed doors what else are the government doing?

Hoping it all blows over?

Should they close the borders? Not sure they can. It's a global mess and it will get far worse. The horse has bolted but kudos to anybody who could risk manage this because the NHS is stretched as it is.

The virus will stop at nothing.
So if we do nothing maybe it will stop? :)

We already have community infection spread within the borders so shutting them will make not a jot of difference.

What would make sense would be widespread testing and compulsory confinement for those with symptoms. When self-isolation is a recommendation there will always be a significant number who will disobey as they have something ‘really important’ to do.

Confirmed case at Russell's Hall hospital

Like going out and buying a shit ton of stuff they don't need?

A lot of people though will go out and go to work because they will be terified they will lose their job or simply won't be able to live on SSP

The country would grind to a halt. The slightest sneeze or cough and people would happily take a couple weeks off. Who knows how many people have had this virus and not even known.

if you are over 60 you have a 1.6% chance of dying if you contract covid 19. Latest stats from the chinese show. (they are also the worst case scenario)Over 80 with a pre existing health condition like respiratory disease or heart disease and it rises to 14.5%

Under 60 its under 1%.

I will take those chances and continue about my world , washing my hands after I pee, before I eat, after I eat and use my home prepared dettol spray disinfectant 1 part to 100 which killed the last known strain of covid according to dettol and industry figures.

I was thinking more about mitigation, plans that kind of thing.

Hospital resources are crucial so how about plans to postpone non critical surgery, plans around closing schools, nurseries etc.
If we need to isolate down to community level how we will get food & other supplies through.

The stance looks to me like we're hoping it won't spread as it has done in every other country which has had it so far

20% are asymptomatic

I don't think any country has been able to contain it - even looks to have resurfaced in Viet Nam right now and they have been very pro-active. I'm no expert but right now I hope they have earmarked 'holding centres' but how the hell they would supply the staff to deal with the worst case scenario is anybody's guess. Hate to say it but there has to be a strategy for the very vulnerable (if that means self quarantine) and the rest who are ' low risk ' need to pull together and be sensible. Wash hands etc

mrs jelly popped to asda yesterday, and was flabbergasted to see the aisles without shitroll, kitchen roll (in case you run out of shitroll natch), pasta, and canned goods especially soup.

I don't recall it being like this when swine flu was a risk. Anyone got a better memory than me (everyone obvs!)

good to see people coming together in their cuntiness. hmm, or is it cuntyness?

I think we should all just go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over.

Agreed, it can't be contained but needs to be slowed so it's manageable.

Another patient in the UK has died after contracting the coronavirus, the NHS has confirmed.

A Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust spokesperson said:

The Trust can confirm that a patient in their 70s being treated for underlying health conditions has died. The patient had tested positive for Covid-19.

The family has been informed and our condolences and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.

We will not be commenting further and ask that everybody respects the family’s privacy.
