Coronavirus

Just had confirmation an outdoors weekend we had booked through work has been cancelled, understandably, but think they've got a bit of cheek saying the deposit is non-refundable.

Squeeze has received her notification from the NMC that she is going back into the NHS. Just got to see where she gets placed I guess.

I'm at work. However, the local mobile sandwich van has just turned up in next door's yard playing the James Bond themetune. Fairly sure he's not a key/essential worker?

His business hasnt been told to stop trading. Down to him to decide if he can afford to shut himself down. Will presume he is self employed so doesnt have much choice to continue unless he has a pool of money to survive on. If the Government offer help there will be plenty of SE's who can stop

Unless you count pet shop workers as essential, then the interpretation that you can travel to work, if it is essential for you to undertake your normal duties at a place other than home, makes more sense

My local Hospital where I was 10 days ago has now got all its anaesthetists working as ICU Dr's, filled all its ICU beds with patients infected with coronavirus , converted another ward that they have filled with patients infected with coronavirus, run out of ventilators, and is expecting at least another 80 patients infected with coronavirus to be admited in the next 2 weeks.

But saying the above, the simple economic fact on construction is if the sites are open then there are set delivery windows. Unless we were forcibly closed then late delivery results in the site being open longer, with scaffolding and cranes in place and even potentially road closures remaining. This has significant cost and so the fines for late delivery are astronomical. It’s one of the reasons we barely touch sports stadia as being late there and fucking up the start of a season potentially means the fines are even more punitive. Laings lost their shirts through late delivery on the Millenium Stadium, and I would imagine it was even worse on the Tottenham stadium as that was really late.

The company precursor to Langs went bump on the millenium as they didn't check oversail rights for their Cranes (among other reasons) Football stadia as a whole are generally perceived as high risk projects so not many companies will consider them

To be pedantic, overun of a Construction contract is not a fine but liquidated ascertained damages (LADs) they are linked to lost revenue and are not allowed to be a punitive fine.

The fact that peoples livelihood depends on work is pretty much the essential bit. The forced closure of the Hospitality industry is to remove the needless gathering of people, the economy isn't expected to just stop completely

Interesting to see your boss hasn't sent you home as I presume your wages are guaranteed up to 80% by the government.

Pretty irresponsible from your employer imo.
The company supplies food packaging for Asda and Tesco, plus the occasional hospital. As well as stuff for lots of places that will do online deliveries. I guess our directors consider us a cog in the supply chain.

I won't be there for the next couple of months any way. A couple of years ago I had to switch from full time to doing the exact same job through the agency. That was down to health issues.

So as of tomorrow they are cutting all non essential staff which includes me now. Until this thing blows over any way, which hopefully will get better over the next 3-4 weeks now these measures are in place.

I'll be ok personally though as I've been saving/investing for the last 20 years so have an emergency/retirement fund to fall back on.

We've just had a memo given out from head office confirming that, according to the government, critical workers in the pallet and packaging industry are classed as key workers therefore we remain open and fully operational whilst it is safe to do so. At least my bills get paid for the moment.

They have confirmed that there is a list of companies/industries that must remain closed and our industry is not on the list.

Downing St briefing has just concluded -- here come the things we have learnt:
On fines: "regulations will be made as soon as possible and by Thursday at the latest, to allow the police to issue fines to those that refuse to comply. As is usual the police will use their own discretion in their use of the powers and will do whatever is appropriate."

The power will come from a regulation -- a Statutory Instrument. In relation to England, it will be signed by the Health Secretary Matt Hancock signed. The regulation is under the Public Health (Control of Diseases) Act 1984

The fine initially would be £30. It would be a Fixed Penality Notice. But the government "can increase it significantly if it necessary to ensure public compliance." "This is of vital performance to save lives," says Downing Street

"as with existing laws, the overwhelming majority of the public can be expected to follow the rules without need for enforcement action."

"Failure to pay the notice could be subject to criminal proceedings and a conviction."

Will the police be asking us if this is the second time we've walked the dog today? "You'd expect the police to focus on the dispersal of groups."

It's her 70th birthday on Sunday :(

It's mine tomorrow - not the one I had planned as should be away on a holiday with my immediate family this week.

Almost annoyed that it's beautiful weather so that I didn't feel so bad about having it cancelled.

Lets hope they dont go round fining homeless folk like in France.
Wonder if those folk in the scrapyards will get fined.

Possibly just gossip but apparently a security guard from new Cross has died through covid-19. In his 30s,no underlying health issues

That was from my sister who works there

I know someone who makes sofa frames and is still at work. Absolutely vital!

The outdoor gym in the park by my flat - which is normally used by only one or two people at the same time, at most, during lunchtimes on weekdays or through the day on weekends - has been absolutely heaving for the past three days. Looks like giving a televised speech to the nation that included saying it was OK for people to go outside for exercise, while burying the info that outdoor gyms are included in the areas closed under lockdown, has led to people treating a few pull-up bars next to a football pitch like it's a normal day at Virgin Active.

40 minutes in on working from home, this is wank, I've spent most of that time making and eating lunch but I'm already bored with this.

Nightmare, don’t know how you will cope.

I misread this at first. Initial thought was "Olympian Masturbator".
