Burnley [H] Build-up Thread

do you lot still think moutinho can play every minute of every game, and gibbs white is good enough (at THIS point) for a starting spot?

We got lucky with the pen decision, no doubt about it Monstrum.

If Raul hadn't been taken down, he would have been trying to control a shot that had spun at him with speed, with his back to goal and Burnley defenders all over him. The odds of him getting a shot off or making a pass to set up a goal would have been very slim,.so the penalty call was a massive favour for us.

I'm not saying he had a chance to score- I'm just saying it was definitely a penalty.

What about the bit where they played exceptional defensive football for 94 minutes?

cant complain against burnley, they played really good defensive football. its not a jousting tournament where you match your opponent on the ground with honour, you gotta do the best you can with the squad you have, its fucking effective

They didn't though for me.

We were poor of our own making, sloppy passing, slow on thought, ponderous in possession.

Burnley did ok but we didn't stretch them nearly enough imo.

In boxing if you dont land a punch you cant win. All the pretty footwork around the ring, bopping dodging and weaving is fine but if there is no punch at the end then you dont win the bout whoever youre facing be they a world great or a village hall amateur. Today we had no puff, no punch and no end product until Adama and Neto came on. Right I am off, I am on air in 20 minutes.

It was only when Neto and Traore came on that we started making any progress. Doherty, Jonny and Bennett were absolutely awful today.

Agree, Bennett had an absolute mare. Caught under balls, we know he isn't a ball player but even the simple he stuff he usually does ok was way off.

Im honestly not impressed with neto this game, sure theres flash but very little actual end product. Adama was fucking effective, AGAIN, making runs, going past players, drawing defenders, getting opp def yellow cards, sending in crosses... always looked an actual threat. Anybody notice how good hes getting in the air too, won 2-3 headers easily despite being a lot shorter, finally using that strength and leaping to his advantage

I think you can add Neves, Jota, Raul and MGW to the absolutely awful list.

No matter what people were saying about Europa League not having an effect, we have looked sluggish and off the pace in all 3 PL games so far, and in all 3 games have been 2nd best for the majority of the match. I don't think that is a coincidence.

Haha that was woeful. Most of it on Nuno.

Doc isn’t fit and was 1/10. Bennett had a stinker and MGW was proper 1/10 as well but fucked Over by some woeful tactics from Nuno.

Jonny can’t cross a road and doesn’t beat a man either. Was rendered useless after they scored. Sadly there was so many other tired players or people having stinkers he had to stay on. Jota 1/10 first half. Actually tried in the second though.

Big shambles. Got away with Murder

neves was at best

6/10

Lol. I think he was 3/10 in the first half, maybe 4/10 in the 2nd half. Very little influence on the game at all. And he didn't play on Thursday in Europe so no excuses really.

Thankfully we have no problems creating chances against teams that sit back, and that's just a myth...

That was pretty terrible. Very one dimensional, movement off the ball was pathetic, it all looked so easy to defend against. Really sloppy on the ball too which has happened a few times this season. Bennett, doc, Jonny, Neves, MGW, Jota were all bloody awful

What a ridiculous overreaction.

We weren't good but it was far from awful. Burnley were bloody hard to play against but at the end of the day we created enough to win it and fully deserved the point.

They didn’t really sit back. We were just pants and played long diagonals to them, lost all the second balls and basically played with 9 men. It wasn’t a normal “cant break them down” game. We were just well off it. Some physically mostly tactically

Not sure that’s true mate, we only had two shots on target, and one of those was the penalty...

Raúl off the post and when he flashed it in front of goal were great chances that wouldn't have counted towards that tally though.

True - but that second one doesn’t count because our closest two players were stood still watching from ten yards away.

They should have been 2 up inside half an hour, and we didn't create anything in open play until the Raul cutback. We offered nothing, if that's not awful then I don't know what is tbf

It WAS awful and we really struggled to cope with their pretty one-dimensional game-plan. Worrying but at least we got an undeserved point and maybe some lessons for Nuno.

We looked so flat and uninspired, thought Neto and Traore added a spark when they came on though

I was surprised how soon they started time wasting as they were clearly on top at the time and looked like they would score with every attack

Personally didn't think Jonny was that bad, as for MGW, he was far from our worst player. Jiminez and Jota aren't quite clicking atm, Jota keeps making poor decisions, I'm sure they'll sort it out soon.
Seems to me that we miss Dendoncker more than any other midfielder atm, despite him not being the most gifted technically, we shouldn't underestimate the usufullness of his workrate and positional nous

Closing. Verdict thread underway.
