Best England XI (1978 to 2020)

Joe Cole did give us this which has to be close to being one of the best England World Cup goals ever.

I was there that night, but in the semi prawn sandwich area. All went a bit flat after Owen was stretchered off, with that goal being the outlier

I remember that night vividly. Thought it was to be the start of something special.

Charlton in the second game of the 1966 World Cup - The "its a beauty" commentary.

As for the result of the left midfield - its close, very close but Joe Cole is edging it. If anyone wants to reconsider their vote before 2 o'clock they can do.

Next up - first slot in centre midfield.

Result around midday tomorrow.

Gascoigne
Lampard
Platt

Would it not be best to choose 4/6 here as otherwise players are going to be duplicated across both spots.

If others want to do it that way then I don't mind.

My own view was that I was going to pick a player for the 2nd slot to play with the winner of the first vote. For example I don't want a combination of Robson/Gerrard/Lampard to fill the two places. I'd much prefer Robson/Scholes or Gerrard/Gascoigne or Lampard/Hoddle.

Team so far.........

Gary Neville------Tony Adams----Rio Ferdinand--------Ashley Cole

Left Midfielder Result

Joe Cole 14
Chris Waddle 13
Raheem Sterling 13
John Barnes 7
Steve McManaman 7
Paul Scholes 4
Steve Hodge 3
Ray Kennedy 3
Nicky Barmby 1
Trevor Sinclair 1

Paul Gascoigne
Bryan Robson
Paul Scholes

Robson
Gascoigne
Scholes

Scholes would be my favourite central midfielder, but for whatever reason it never seemed to really click for England.

Lampard

Gerrard

Hargreaves

Same on my Scholes omission, he had maybe two good years out of seven while he was involved.

Missed Robson's best years, he shouldn't have been a starter at Italia 90 and his injury did us a favour.

Went Platt as his goal record is outstanding.

Der Harg was great, just broken.
