Best England XI (1978 to 2020)

Yeah i understand that, neither Rooney or Lineker would likely work with Shearer, but are we picking the team that works the best or are we picking the best 11 players? Because they would be entirely different teams.

Shearer stated that if he could pick one player to alongside out of the top ten Premier league strikers his choice would be Rooney.

Well on that basis why were Robson and Gascoigne picked together? That surely isn't a partnership likely to work well together?

As much as I don't like to agree with Cyber ( :) ), that team is incredibly one-paced, if we want it to be a 'team' then we need some pace and also a striker who could work with Shearer.

I think Lineker and Shearer could work together and certainly don't think they make the same runs.

Shearer at his peak [Poland away I think springs to mind] was the perfect centre forward. Lineker would just poach any bits and pieces off him and run into space that his hold up play created. In a sort of third man running way. Shearer was also prolific as well.
One of Linekers issues was that although he scored goals, no one else alongside him really chipped in and so we struggled to score if he didn't. Beardsley was a great player but not a great goalscorer.

Rooney would drop deep as a 10 and also go wide like Beardsley would. He could also get on the end of a Shearer flick. He could see a pass well and as a deep lying forward would be a perfect foil for Shearer.

Onto your other pair, Robson would do all the dog work for Gascoigne and as a proper box to box midfielder would give Gazza the space he needed to be Gazza.

Thanks Sniffer. Fancy doing a more niche England cricket one for the same period?
2 openers
3 batsmen
1 all rounder
1 keeper
1 spinner
3 quicks

I appreciate there may be some crossovers Alec Srewart opening and keeping wicket for example.

Yep, I'm up for that!
