Wolves - Norwich Match Thread

I'm still narked by Ruddy today. Im still not sure how it went in, the ball seemed to go through him

I'd sign Maddison in a heartbeat though, looks a class player

Yeah maddison looked great, not sure he would be an improvement on MGW though

Still think MGW will be better as a LF/RF for us this season. He will try the N'Diaye/Neves keep-the-ball under pressure and he'll get shown up for it once a game. His touches are class though and his pace, passing too.

Only thing is he should have deffo passed at one point, same for Afobe and I think Jota once as well.

There was a moment where he cut inside in the penalty area onto his left foot, and the guy to the left of him slipped. At that point he could have either shot with his left, or passed to Afobe who was now on his own but he wanted to cut back onto his right foot! Maybe he didn't see it all quick enough but it was a golden opportunity.

I really rate both Bright and Ronan but I think Morgan is better than both at just 18. We will do very well to keep hold of him!

Ruddy is the reason we dropped 2 points, he had all day to stop that shot.

Leo should be our go to man again, I'd start him against Fulham

Agree on this if Costa isn't fit Leo is the man that brings it all together. He's actually (planned or not, and due to injury) had a bit more of a breather lately too which may have been good for him as well. He had no pre-season and looked a little jaded before our warm weather training. Hopefully he can finish the season strongly as we are a better team when he is playing well

match report especially for the super kind trips!

for the first time, I think we saw potential complacency (which I have no doubt will be addressed by Nuno), combined with a confused team/poor subs. I'm deflated, but not despondent. For periods, we still showed we are a class above norwich.

proper game of 2 halves. We started well, for 10 mins had solid clean possession. Some nice passing generally. Coady and Bennett went in tough early on, and the ref had a word with Coady. Then Coady & Boly completely switched off, letting Norwich in, and they really should have scored.
The gulf in class was immediately shown, as Jota, with some sublime skill turned most of the norwich defence, and scored.
N'Daiye is left unmarked to head in from a corner.
Norwich's equalizer flattened the crowd a little, which surprised me. Silly free kick to give away, then we weren't aware at our defending, and it was a simple header for them.
Neves booking did the same - he could have been booked earlier for the foul in the corner, but if the fouls wasn't sufficient, he'd probably have een due one for accumulations..

Boly was absolutely immense most of the time. Looks so good on the ball too.

Costa was also very lively. Some great accelaration to beat 3 norwich players in one go, and he almost went past another 3. He was excellent tonight.

We seemed to focus on attacking down our right. Douglas made a few good forward runs that weren't seen, and when he eventually was played in, didn't make the most of it.

2nd half was a bit bizarre. Costa went off (injury?) and Saiss on. For me, a bad change. Suspect Nuno wanted to shore up the middle, but we ended up playing a wierd 3-3-2-2 formation that wasn't working. We had no real width or outball, and norwich grew into the game. To be fair, they hadn't let their heads drop at 2-0, as we could easily have gone on to score 2-3 more in that first half. They took their chance, and then with lots of decent close passing caused us problems.

Afobe comes on, and doesn't resolve our shape issue. MGW then comes on for N'Daiye in an attempt to remedy this, but Norwich's tails are up, and they continue to believe they can get something out of the game. However, Gibbs-White shows he isn't out of place in the team, by showing numerus touches of good control and passing. How he doesn't score is beyond me. Twice I was convinced he would score.

The last 10 mins are just batshit. Ref loses the plot, fails to give numerous obvious fouls (or gives them the wrong way), and norwich somehow score with a distance strike that no doubt everyone is struggling to comprehend.

Very weird game. For moments in the first half, we were awesome. However, for most of the 2nd half, we looked very disjointed.

Have to say though, how fucking good is Ruben Neves. The man is amazing.

Also lovely to meet the jinfamous jinky, and the irrepressible t-dan for the first time.

You're more than welcome LJ, thanks for the report. Sounds like a real Jekyll and Hyde performance.

Disappointed I missed out on meeting Jinky and T-Dan, hopefully they are about again soon.

Anyone else noticed Doherty's lack of (or wanting to) shooting recently too?
Quite a few times hes got into the box and he always plays a pass across or back, im sure he was smacking some of these goalwards last season/early this season.

Hopefully I can make it to another match before the end of the season but at my current rate I'll probably be back sometime in 2020!

Annoyingly we seem to have a bit of a habit of only playing half a game on occasions so far this year. QPR, Forest, Norwich. We have also been the beneficiary of red cards that helped us pick up a few points. Bonatini was great for the first third of the season but looked more off the pace since and hasnt scored for an age. That said I would still start him against fulham as his hold up play is the best we have to offer. I wouldnt take Afobe with the squad. The Norwich equaliser was shocking all round , but Ruddy really must stop those. That said he knows it . That and Forest(?) cross cum shot are the real howlers from hoim this year. A couple of could do betters but you cannot argue with 17 clean sheets. He knew he fucked up straight away. Another set piece goal against is something else we need to eradicate. Again it happens too often although it was really well taken , a deft touch. Lets hope the Brentford Sheff UtD form returns soon. Still , hopefully the last we see of these budgie bastards for a few years.

Thought it was Jota, not Afobe, but you're right that a little dink over the fallen defender to him and he would have smashed it in the net, game over.
At just gone 18 years of age, what a prospect he is with all that talent. With a little more experience he is going to be immense.

Yeah it was Jota you are right! Yeah it was almost a gift for us but in the heat of the moment MGW tried to turn back onto his right. It was the worst option of many he could have made in the end!

I do think that if it had been Bright there would have been so many more people moaning about it though.

More from my Norwich mate:

"We are very good at keeping hold of the ball and playing around and in between teams as our midfield is littered with technically good players. Problem is we create very little at the moment!

Ruddy is a competent championship keeper although he doesn't command his box, is terrible claiming crosses, his kicking is rotten, shots bounce off him like a pinball machine and he is the only keeper i know who's more likely to concede the further out the shot is! Had a great spell with us to start with but stagnated. When you go up, you'll need a better keeper!

He's also notoriously thin skinned...

Angus Gunn is leaps and bounds ahead of him and will be looking for a Prem club next year if you fancy loaning him..."

...and thats supposed to be the definition of a competent championship keeper. Its an absolute bollocks definition and a ridiculously inaccurate description of Ruddy.

We were getting frustrated with Norwich keeping the ball so well - that's what led to Neves' booking. At times, we weren't patient enough when Norwich had the ball.

Having said that, it wasn't like we were being opened up at will. There's a decent side within that Norwich side/system with a few additions. If they can keep their better players and add to their squad, they should fare better next season because they've left it a bit late this time around.

They were far better last night than they were on Sunday against a more 'traditional' Championship setup! If you compare last night's game to something like Millwall v Cardiff from a few weeks ago, you wouldn't believe both games were in the same division.
