Wolves / Covid-19

Are we hoping it's Troy Deeney that's caught it due to his statements over the last week or so

Given he's got a 6 month old with breathing difficulties you'd have to be a special kind of sociopath to wish that.

Much as I think his specific objections are ill-thought-out, Deeney's not wrong that he and his family are more vulnerable. I hope the illness gets nowhere near the Deeney household.

There is no issues with footballers refusing to play, obviously Deeney has special circumstances and he is allowed to do what we wants.

But the ones who are refusing to play need to not be paid or placed on furlough (2.5k p/m) and that stance needs to continue until there is a vaccine and/or effective treatment.

I’m sure Deeney’s feelings are genuine and would rather go unpaid than risk his child’s health (even if that risk is lower than normal day to day activities), but this can’t stop an industry, just like it wouldn’t other industries.

Agree its his choice, agree they shouldn't be paid but sorry no not furloughed! Why should tax payers foot that bill.

Anybody out there who has been asked to return to work (or work throughout!!) who refused to work would not be furloughed.

I didn't know about deeneys child,so can I be excused my comment about him earlier?

Wouldn't they be paid under sick pay conditions in their contract, or compassionate leave?

Well no ideally Deeney shouldn’t be on furlough as he’s got plenty in the bank, but I can’t stand here and say footballers should be treated like everyone else and then not treat them like everyone else. And for every Deeney, there are 3 other footballers at a lower level going month to month needing to be paid.

Plus there’s plenty of people milking the system at the moment who don’t need it but that’s a separate discussion.

Not a clue. I have no idea on the nuances of footballers contracts or for that matter any industry which isn’t my own.

The thing is, footballers will be tested more than even NHS staff. Now, before contact training, before and after matches so I'd say they are the safest employees in the country with regard to C19

Really? You sure it's not the other way round and there are a few people milking the system? I doubt there are many businesses that are deliberately furloughing staff to milk the system and most businesses would want to be open and earning again. Or would you rather people be out of work?

I would imagine that most PL footballers are earning more than £2.5k a month from investments, endorsements etc. etc. before they get out of bed, so I doubt furloughing would ever enter into it.

Furlough isn't for people who's employers/the government say can go back to work but they decide they don't want to.

That's not how it works/has worked.

Adrian Mariappa is the Watford player who tested positive.

It was purely a comment that “people are milking system”. Whether that be 1 or 1m. Shouldn’t have bothered putting it but I didn’t expect that to be picked up on in a discussion about footballers (and even tried to state it’s a separate discussion). I’ll know better next time.

I honestly don’t care how, what or by who they are paid. My point isn’t about “milking the system”, or furlough. It’s that if they don’t want to do their job then they can’t be expected to be on full pay. Simple as that...

And I agree, but they can't be expected to be on furlough pay either. Nobody else in that position would be!

I don't think any player in the Prem will expect to be furloughed. Not sure what the list looks like now, but last month just Crewe and Sunderland furloughed their players (cue people getting wound up that Sunderland were getting the Government to pay their 20k a week players even though the max is £2500)

This situation is a unique one for Football contracts as I doubt there is a pandemic clause. The clubs have a duty to protect their players so if a player doesn't want to play because he feels it is not safe to do so, then I guess clubs have to view them the same as if they were injured. I will be amazed if any club shames a player or fines them or refuses to pay them if they declare they are not happy with being involved in a situation that can put them or others at risk. Clubs pay thousands out a week to players that can't do anything due to injury (and some of those injuries not caused when playing or training)
