Wolves Academy Thread

Ronan and Bright too

Ronan wasn't ours he was Rochdale's first. I did miss Bright off though. Still behind Barnsley and I just don't think our academy is as good as everybody thinks it is. It isn't bad by any stretch of the imagination but I think people need to temper their expectations of a bunch of lads bought in to play together with only 2 years to develop. Clearly it's a numbers game and I have high hopes for Ennis and Johnson but then you look at Deslandes, Randall, Reid and Odoffin.

First team manager has to carry the can for some of that though, no? As I've said before McAlinden might never quite have made it but we screwed up his development by having him behind fucking Leon when he was ready to break through.

That's true to a point, certainly we wasted McAlinden and Winnall behind Cassidy and Leon when the former 2 were clearly better.

But if they're not good enough as Deslandes et al aren't then you have to ask questions of the coaches. It is a conundrum that most clubs struggle with and Wolves are no better or worse than anybody else.

Ronan came through the academy to a greater extent than deslandes, Randall or odoffin though as he arrived at 14 didn't he? I think the acadamy is doing ok personally, ronan, bright, Gibbs white and Jordan Allen give me hope they can go on to do very well.

I'll accept some clubs are better than us at it - was going to site norwich but actually they only really have the Murphy twins, and apart from Everton who have a bit of golden patch coming through, I can't think of many better - spurs have winks but that's about it, Southampton maybe targett in the last two years - but I'd say there are a lot in a worse position than ourselves.

Even off the top of my head, of the Everton guys you named, holgate came from Barnsley, garbutt from Leeds and Davies came from tranmere.

Ronan joined at 16. Soton have had fantastic players come through over the last 2-3 seasons. Stephens, Shaw, Chambers, Reed, Sims, McQueen, Targett and Ward-Prowse. We're not even playing the same game as them as all of those players have played and look like premier league players.

United have brought through some top class talent too, most of which would walk into our first team if we had proper coaches. We just don't compare at the top level yet.

Spurs - Harry Kane ring a bell?

Davies joined Everton's academy at 10 years old.

I think if you're old enough to play consistently in the first team (16 onwards) then it's fair to say academy football is before this.

harry kane made his debut eight years ago - are we going that far back? Luke Shaw was five years ago, as was chambers.

you cant compare our output for the last two years with everyone else's for the last eight years.

Harry Kane debuted 6 years ago and Shaw 5 but even going back that far Spurs and others are miles ahead of us as they are producing Premier class players not just championship.

Wolves are middle of the pack with the Academy and since Kev's been in charge (6 years although you could argue 9 as he was Academy manager) I don't think we've brought through 1 premier league class player whereas others have done that and more. Particularly Soton who you were quick to dismiss as worse than us, which is clearly silly

There is a big difference between us and the rest and we are not making that up just now, we are behind the Barnsley's of the world at the moment so let's not laud the academy just yet.

Surely we're now starting to see the fruits of the work that was put into the academy to bring it up to scratch all those years ago? In the timeframes you speak of, our academy was nowhere near the quality of Spurs or Southampton's.

It's very, very, very early days with all of them but I would say all of Ronan, MGW and Ennis have shown the potential to be PL players one day.

And we are still not at the level they were years and years ago. I think we all need to temper our expectations. Like DW I hope Ronan, MGW, Ennis, Bright, Herc, Johnson and Wilson become mainstays of the team but at the moment we haven't produced anybody that would enable us to play higher and that is the mark of a truly successful youth system.

Into the final of the Birmingham Senior Cup. Beat Sutton Coldfield on pens tonight.

We've not been in the final of this since 1999 (I think) and not won it since 1987 so it's about time we did it. Leamington in the final, not sure on the arrangements, if it's at Molineux then I should think I'll go.

I cannot comment about the West Midlands, but in Leicestershire the Senior cup final is always held at Holmes Park, the home of the Leicestershire and Rutland County Football Association.

Nice to see some of the under 18s for the first time tonight. They more than held their own although we always seem to fade second half. Brown, Sanderson, John, Watt and Carr were all good stepping up into the older aged group. Indeed they out-performed the likes of Breslin and Delacoe who continue to offer little promise for the future. Wilson on the other hand is a born finisher and continues to impress. Bring on the final!

The Final is at a pre determined venue, when Hednesford won in 2013 it was Walsall

It still says TBA on the FA website but that it is to be at one of the local professional grounds.

Doubt they would give us home advantage in a final though.
