Wolves Academy Thread

Has there been any information about if we are replacing Gill, or if people have stepped up?

I noticed Kevin Nicholson is still out of work since he left Cardiff. He is just 30, has his Pro License and has been first team coach and u21s manager. Left when Warnock came in.

Cardiff are the best coached Academy team I've seen this season, with the three age group teams I saw all playing in the same system and structure. This, especially at the younger age groups, isn't always obvious or a given.

From The Official Site U-18 match report:

"Darren Ryan says he is delighted with his side’s first win since September.

Ryan’s young Wolves beat local rivals West Bromwich Albion on Saturday to get the Merit group campaign off to the best possible start. Two goals from Jordan Allan saw the Under 18s run-out 2-0 winners in the game at Compton Park.

The recently appointed Under 18s manager was impressed with his side’s work rate and he says that the win was fully deserved."

Who is Jordan Allen? 3 in 2 seems impressive, although remember Liam McAlinden seemed to notch quite a few.

We signed him from Scotland didn't we? Think he made headlines for making his debut up there when he was 14, no idea if he's any good.

Strange that these sorts of signings always get so many idiots chirping off on FB or twitter. Despite the mixed seasons we have had, look at the impact of Ikeme, Doherty, Batth, Evans, Price, Graham, Iofra, Hause, Bright, Rohan, Ebanks-Lan and a few others. Played some parts over the last few seasons and whilst a few of them are obviously at their limits, that is a fairly decent endorsement of the academy being somewhat successful.

Only trouble is BMB only Batth, Price and Ikeme of those players came through our full academy. At best you could argue the rest have come through the senior years academy after other clubs did all the hard work. Hause and Graham had played first team football by the time they came to Wolves.

I'm yet to be convinced we do anything but cherry pick talent in the hope we can get the players ready in 2-3 years.

Am sure that that's what all other Level 1 Academy teams do though as well - how many young players have Chelsea hoovered up over the last few years & how many of those have made it into their first team?

Not sure that we have that bad a record really

Sorry I did mean to state that, for me that is an important part of it, I was mainly trying to show how these two were similar to Iofra, Hause and Evans who have been the better grads I'd argue?

When I was briefly with the Rotherham grass roots scouting team they specified that as a key part of the development, looking for those released from other clubs at 16/17. Specifically the larger prem teams. We have the benefit of being able to attract the better players from smaller teams as well as being an Elite cat 1 so can't be stopped from doing so. The first time that hits off and we hit on someone it will all be worth it.

Yes I'm sure Chelsea do that but how many youth players have Chelsea brought through since John Terry? maybe a bad example you've chosen but other top flight clubs have much better records than ours recently.

Not sure that we have done that much worse than most over the last 2 years - who else would you consider has done better?

Of the Cat 1 clubs I would say
Spurs (Winks, Kane, Pritchard, Mason),
Soton (Ward-Prowse, Stephens, Lallana, Walcott, Bale, Ox-Chamberlien, Dyer and others)
Everton (Davies, Pennington, Barkley, Holgate, Garbutt, Browning)

have all done better.
