Wolves 5 v 1 Horwich Wanderers: The Verdict Thread

I can see Alan's point.

If a player is looking to put himself about and get physical to stop his opponent then chances are they're going to get more riled up if there's a response in kind. If the original retaliates rather than just shrugging it off then they're only increasing the chances of things ended badly for them, either as the physicality increasing potentially causing an injury or by being reprimanded by the referee. You don't have to 'fight back' to show your resistance to that sort of treatment, you can just carry on regardless showing that you won't be deterred from playing your game in spite of that treatment.

I've seen Messi be on the receiving end of some horrible challenges but more often than not he just sits there, shrugs it off and then wrecks face next time he's got the ball. Let the football do the talking.

I do think it's a bit of a double standard to complain about the nature of the Wheater challenge he whilst at the same time celebrating and encouraging Jota to stand toe to toe with players employing that strategy.

Don't think anybody is encouraging Jota to go out and produce the sort of tackle Wheater did, but showing you won't be bullied and pushed around is fine for me.

Surely you can do that just by carrying on playing your game and not having a go back, regardless of what extent you take it, though? Why run the risk of escalating the situation or attracting your disciplinary action yourself? Jota shouldn't need to resort to that, he's perhaps better than every defender in the league by some margin, so much like my example of Messi previously he should just be the bigger man and get on with things, he'll have the beating of his opponent anyway.

Indeed, managers will send players out to 'stick one on' some players early as they know they will disappear from the game. The fact Jota doesn't allow this means managers will be less likely to attack him early.

I can see Alans point and in an ideal world that would be great but in the real world it doesn't work like that, if Jota just goes down rolling around he's gunna invite more of the same, its not about retaliating more about standing up to the bully boys

What the fuck is Alan on about?

Jota got kicked in to the air for the entire game. He went shoulder to shoulder with Wheater a couple of times to let him know he’s not a pushover and the only thing the tugboat shithouse could do was go through the back of him. At that point Jota has already won the battle, because Wheater knew he couldn’t compete with him footballing wise, pace wise, skill wise, intelligence wise - AND he was on a yellow so couldn’t get physical again (the only card he had to play).

Jota got up and went on to score, so he let his football do the talking and I was chuffed for him.

I agree with this.

Plus it's a mindset thing. There is a thought that these lads might go into hiding if you kick them. Jota lets them know this isn't the case, I'm very happy with what he does. He's never going to hurt someone but he lets them know he's up for it

In Jota’s case he is absolutely right to stand up for himself, the only time it becomes unnecessary is when the ref stops the thugs from fouling him. When he gets no protection he has to show he won’t be bullied.

Not really saying he should roll around as I despise that bit, but it's been characterized like he's gone out of his way to foul players that have fouled him. That is what I have a problem with.

Al it's a cynical game. There's dozens of pulls, tugs, kicks, checks, follow through, all sorts of unpunished 'fouls' every game. Some is to get an advantage, some is a message to your man. Fouls are fine. Attempting to injure somebody clearly isn't

Alan, this is professional football. You need a certain level of mental and physical toughness. It might be a cliche but sometimes you have to win the right to play football

Running blog from a Bolton supporter at Saturdays game:

Equally funny and cringe worthy

Watching that & others it's clear that with the away fans in the Quadrant then at least half the North Bank start singing and it ripples along

There is a need to connect the Steve Bull up properly so that away fans only go in there - at the moment only low attendances can as a chunk of the seats have no view whatsoever

If it is built properly no reason why bigger away attendance cannot be accommodated in the NB & End blocks of the Steve Bull

Can’t understand why you’d spend all match filming it. Saw a Leeds fan do exactly the same on Weds night.

Similarly as soon as we got the penalty on Saturday. Loads of people got their phones out to film it. Live for the moment.

That was the plan when the rebuild was announced.

Things you never imagined you'd post on an internet forum:

This weekend, I got sandwiched between 2 big birds. It was exhilarating, and a wonderful experience that happened 5 times.

We are simply unstoppable this season. Only 1 team will stop us winning the league, and that is us. We're still only in 3rd gear FFS.
Everyone on saturday was a minimum of 7/10, and the front 3 are simply unplayable. Stuff that doesn't come off is still better than a lot of other teams in the division. It is that good, that anyone walking past molineux on saturday afternoons can justy hear lots of sex noises, cos that's what it is like.

Thing that stood out to me - the system, plan and organisation of the team. Everyone knows not only what they should do, but what their team mates are doing too. For example, Saiss, knows he's responsible for covering Doherty at rb when he surges forward. Neves may well frequently cover the left, and will sometimes be behind Boly, available for the pass. Bonatini covers both wide players. Cav is just everywhere at the moment, and is a fucking phenomenon. Ruddy, as well as the assist for the final goal, knows the times to hit the wide player (usually the wing back) who is wide on the touchline and available.

This isn't rocket science. It's a team. The team comes above all. But what a fucking team.

The highlights dvd for the season is gonna need to be a box set!

As ever, my indebtedness to the wonderful person who is darlo!
