Wolves 2-2 Hull - Verdict Thread.

Most of us would've taken 4 points from Boro and Hull so I don't see the difference, especially as Cardiff was always going to be the toughest game of the 3.

May not have been the best performance but we were unbalanced from the start, we clearly miss Neves and I really don't think Alf is a very good player at all.

Nuno got this wrong tonight with his team but better to do that and not lose then do a Bruce and get gunned 3-0 after a tough game.

Agree that we were unbalanced. It would have been a big call to start Burr or say Cav at right back but I know what you mean regarding the team. I think he was just trying to make best of options available. Ofosu-Ayeh would have been nice to have but clearly not ready. I think Nuno's main mistake was not putting MGW on earlier more than anything, he added real impetus to the team. What a player we have on our hands.

Had a feeling we’d struggle tonight certainly didn’t think it was going to be straight forward like some were thinking.
After being pegged back we were very sloppy, Probably still need 7 points to go up can’t see where Fulham will drop another point.
If we only get 7 and they win all their games then they'll beat us on GD. I don't think either will happen.

Miranda and Baath with be out the door in the summer. I think Miranda has cost us a goal in pretty much every game he's played (I'm sure he hasn't but if feels that way)

Many people said on the build up thread you don't solve one positional problem by weakening two. That's what we did.

I get that - I'm just not sure what else we could have done though really? Burr would have been even more of a risk than people thought when he threw him on.

Should have just played Wing backs and Wing back.
We wouldn’t pass Bennett the ball in the first half, Cav experiment lasted about 5 mins as he had no idea what to do there. Then we bought Burr on and we wouldn’t pass him the ball either. Fortunately he was in the right place to get on the end of a cross to equalise.

I see no way that playing Vinagre at RWB could have been worse than what we played today. And we couldn’t even get him in the squad. Jota was woeful after the first 20 mins and Afobe wasn’t much better.

I would have played Graham or MGW there. Vinagre stops being an option once Jota is fit unless one of the forwards gets ditched from the bench

Only thing this does is confirm what we already knew: Saïss and N'Diaye don't really work as a pair.

I'm not sure what to say to anyone who now says Buur should have started except that hindsight is 20/20. There was never a chance it wouldn't be Bennett out there.

Just a shame now that Miranda will pay for Costa's mistake but he was never displacing Bennett full time.

On to Friday.

Only game I can them dropping points is Millwall away or maybe at Sheff Wed but apart from that the rest should be routine.

Yeah that was the problem - once Jota was fit Vinagre was never going to get a chance sadly, as I think though I felt it was clear Bennett would play there he would have been my choice like many said. Graham he clearly doesn't rate does he? It's weird because he has a lot of ability and I don't think he's a lazy player, just doesn't seem to be happening for him at all.

They won't win one of those 2 in my opinion. Predicting results is a fairly pointless task, just in the last couple of weeks you wouldn't have Fulham to draw with QPR, Villa to lose to them or us drawing tonight. Any team that gets 92 points will be promoted

He could have dropped Bonatini or Afobe off the bench to accommodate Vinagre and then actually have a legitimate full back on the bench.

But not a legitimate right sided one if he'd done that.

I think we found out tonight how lucky we have been that Doherty had played every game so far. He's not world beater but simple fact is he can play that position better than everyone else. The fact that Nuno kept changing the wing back tells me that he couldn't find a solution without Matt (I would have played Vinagre if Phil wasn't fit but hey ho).

Just had a look at the Sky highlights. Costa needs a kick up the ass for being so complacent on the edge of his own box, but Miranda was an absolute idiot for pulling back like that. Completely unnecessary.

I thought N’Diaye played pretty well tonight but the bloke just doesn’t suit the way we play. He makes a lot of forward runs (some of them really good runs) but it leaves a gaping hole in the centre of the pitch. An area where we normally control the game from.

Happy with a draw considering how poor the game was. At 1-0 up I got the sense from the players and fans slightly that it was job done and we switched off slightly until the fans got loud following Burr's goal. It's always going to be tough against a flat 6 defence (credit to them, it got a result), and our unwillingness to use the right wing back effectively combined with Douglas' flaws going forward would always make it tougher.

N'daiye and Saiss just cannot seem to gel, Saiss was clearly tired from Friday still (with his radar off) and so we needed N'daiye to stick a bit closer - his roaming/box to box mentality isn't really suited unless he has someone as capable as Neves next to him.

A poor selection from Nuno for the RWB conundrum meant that we limited ourselves further, I felt that when we got the ball we didn't look to spread the play as we would do with Doherty and when we are facing a defensively minded team, limiting our options by not providing an offensively and defensively capable wing back, we will only struggle. Hindsight is everything but Phil or Graham really ought to have come in. (I don't agree Burr should have started as it would have been far too risky)

Ruddy - 5/10 - One excellent stop in the second half but its another 2 goals conceded and some fans will use it as ammo against him. Had one shocker in the first half where he flapped at the ball then sliced a kick. Really need him sharper for friday.

Miranda - 4/10 - Good on the ball but I have no idea why he needed his arm there (Costa's pass was **** but his arm seemed to have a mind of its own), some nice passes but hooked at half time and probably the end of his career with us.
Coady - 5/10 - I felt he could have tried to bring the ball out of defence a bit more as Hull sat back as he was the most similar to Neves in terms of cross field passing ability. Fine defensively but 2 goals shipped in again and I feel he will need to be more vocal and sharper for friday.
Boly - 5/10 - The cross for the second came down the left, he seemed to get annoyed at Douglas a few times, a long range shot that was pushed wide.

Bennett - 5/10 - Didn't do much at RWB despite his efforts. Had no chance with the second goal as it was a good ball in and he was under a lot of pressure. Hopefully that is the firm end of any more appearances at RWB for him.
Douglas - 5/10 - Pretty poor despite one decent free kick in the first half. Didn't get on anyone's wavelength and didn't get forward effectively. Got toasted for the second goal as the cross went in but semi made up for it by setting up Burr

Saiss - 5/10 - His radar was really poor today. He clearly was still feeling the effects of Friday and this was probably the game where he needed his CM partner closer to him but we didn't have anyone. Had a good header stopped.
N'daiye - 5/10 - Some good runs early in the first half but faded. His radar was off as well as he will be benched for Cardiff.

Costa - 5/10 - People will remember a lovely run where he beat a few players but it was a poor game for him. A horrendous back pass which put Miranda under pressure and he didn't seem to really influence the game in an impactful manner.
Jota - 4/10 - Really poor, scored a penalty and some decent runs in the first half but he needs to stop complaining about everything as he will end up getting distracted. If he just rides the tackles, gets back up and focuses on his game as he did before he will thrive again.
Cavaleiro - 5/10 - Looked dangerous but lacked end product, was given a go at RWB where he did not settle at all. Full of effort but lacking quality.

SUBS

Afobe - 5/10 - Didn't really add much as the second half was so poor generally. Had a half chance go wide.
Burr - 6/10 - Really well taken goal, some good tackles and passes but with people not opening their bodies for a pass to the right wing back he didn't really impact much. Due to his stature he looks at risk to high balls and at times I felt he pushed a bit too high and looked to cut in slightly too early (I suppose this will come with experience and some of it is just not being used to the team). But he can be pleased as he certainly saved us a point with that header.
Gibbs-White - 5/10 - Added some urgency in the middle but didn't seem to get much penetration in the middle.

Thought we controlled the game ok without being scintillating up until their penalty..what a clusterfuck that was. We lost control after that, second half we just got worse and worse. Picked up a bit when MGW came on and we finished strongly....but too little too late. Thats the poorest I've seen Jota, first touch not good enough and a bit slow, didn't look anywhere near fit to me, didn't understand why Nuno didn't just swap him for Afobe at half time. TBH think its all down to me, I'm a Jonah, we've played the best football in living memory this season, won loads of games, scoring for fun and everytime I've been this season, we've been crap
