I'm a bit reticent/hesitant to say it given the connotations it has but...anyone else have slight reminders of Gazza from MGW tonight?
I'm in two minds to call him a kid because he absolutely was not out of place out there. MotM by a country mile. But vast improvement all over the park, from everyone. We were unlucky to go behind and we had a couple hairy moments at the back (Bennett and Boly both with goal-saving tackles) and we had to work for it the whole game. But they did, they played some good stuff, and they deserved it.
Ref was diabolical, I can go with some people if they want to claim favouritism as it certainly seemed that way (and the assistants too) but ultimately he was just poor all round.
Delighted for Jota, hopefully he kicks on from this. Him and Vinagre worked really, really well together - how much of that is down to Ruben being a natural leftie I'm not sure but that's potentially our left side for the next 10 years, with any luck.
I will save a word for Moutinho as well. He was pretty anonymous (on the ball, at least) for a lot of the game, had a few decent passes here and there, and he like Saiss could have easily picked up a second yellow. But the last 10 minutes or so he was charging around and closing their players down as much as anyone, AND he kept a cool head when the ball came to him, which I think spread to the others and helped us see the game out.
Delighted with that result, truly. I think we needed a result against a 'big' team at some point to really legitimise what we've been doing (at least in some people's eyes) - there's no doubt now. Consistency is obviously an issue but they will learn and improve.
Enjoy your evenings everyone!
-edit- ha, was writing this while the above discussion was going on
