Wolves 1-3 Man City - Verdict Thread

When Jimenez scored last season against Southampton (at home) it was disallowed and Jimenez was given a (very harsh) yellow for handball?

We had two disallowed in that game

Ok, ta. Must have been an obvious one then as I can't remember it

It was handball and I think everyone expected the goal to be chalked off even as he was going through, shouldn't have been a booking though.

Well played by Man City. A superb performance marred only by Sterling cheating by diving in the box; absolutely disgraceful and he should be ashamed of himself.

We had chances in the second half to get an equaliser but we missed them so lost our chance of a point.

Sterling didn't get booked as Marriner's an incompetent tosser

To be fair to Marriner, I thought he had a good game last night and it's not often I say that about him.

Sterling should have been booked though.

If everything goes to plan I assume we could look like this at 3-5-2 with reserves in brackets and injuries in red.

Rui

Boly Coady Saiss

Semedo(Hoever) Dendonker Moutinho(Vinny2) Neves Marcal (Vinagre/ Jonny)

Raul (Fabio) Neto (Podence)

For 3-4-3 starting line up

Rui

Boly Coady Saiss

Semedo(Hoever) Dendonker (Vinny2) Neves(Moutinho) Marcal (Vinagre/ Jonny)

Traore Raul (Fabio) Neto (Podence)

Either option works for me depending on the opposition.
3-5-2 for the big six games H and A realistically and Everton Leicester Southampton Leeds Away
3-4-3 For the rest

We got done first half by City, the full court press they had on the ball was a piece of tactical genius from Guardiola, they don't normally play like that and they clearly couldn't do it for 90 minutes and that knocked us off our stride and gave them the initiative. Our playing of a front 3 high and up against the back 4 left far too much space for City to push Fernandiinho and Rodri onto our midfield pair and effectively their front 3 + De Bruyne onto our back 5. We then got shown up as a side who are good but not technically good enough to deal with a press that high in intesnity. There are few teams that could but Coady, Boly, Adama and Moutinho especially struggled more than anybody else.

First half to Guardiola

Moving Neto and Raul into slightly deeper lying positions in the second half and making the front 3 more fluid really helped us 2nd half meaning Rodri and Fernandinho had to drop back and defend the front 3 leaving Neves space to play and I thought he was superb 2nd half. We also went back to front a fair bit but on the deck with Neto and Raul linking well with Boly and Saiss and having Neves and Moutinho a few yards away to pick passes wide or over the top as Ake and Stones held a very high line.

Nuno definitely gets our tactics right in the 2nd half and I wish he'd done it sooner but was probably shell shocked by City's Klopp style approach to the first half.

If we had the finishing and a left side that could do what our right side did I think we'd have won the game. But we didn't. Donk was abysmal when he came on, didn't win a tackle and gave the ball away twice whilst being pathetic for the final goal. Woeful stuff. I thought Silva worked very hard without actually getting into spaces he could hurt City and Raul looked more comfortable with him beside him than Neto and Podence. Maybe Raul prefers being in a two not just dearly departed Diogo :(

Lots of positives even though we lost.

Pretty much agree. Disappointing not to get at least a draw by the end but we're overall looking better than at the tail end of last season and I'm quietly optimistic about our otherwise more gentle next run of games in terms of getting a decent start to the season together.

I don't think you can be disappointed we didn't get anything, we were evidently second best for the majority of the game (and that paints a kinder picture than it should, we simply weren't in the game at all for an entire half). You can't just measure it on chances, much as Cyber can't (but he will :D ) say we didn't create enough because we only had one shot on target, while disregarding the opportunities where we should have hit the target (besides which, Neves' shot was on target, just Walker kicked it away rather than Ederson saving it, so there's a 100% increase immediately).

We gave it a good go. As Kenny says, a lot of teams after that 45 would just cave and we didn't. But we didn't deserve owt.

both teams to score, Marcal to be booked, Raul to score = 16/1?

what really stood out for me was how good they were playing around with one touch football compared to us who took several touches most of the time...good second half though and we created some clear chances..Traore not in RWB need to play higher up..

Man City 'schooled' us in the first half - Nuno gets most things right, but not for that period. Given that they were coming in 1 game short & not wanting a gap to open up we should have realised that they would go in hard from the start & really press us.

An extra midfielder & 3 - 5 - 2 formation would have been better able to survive the onslaught.

Then again you can't predict a stupid tackle - Saiss should have learnt from Coady who avoided the final challenge on Sterling (who should have received a yellow for the dive).

Many teams would have folded - we didn't & 'could' have got an underserved point.

If Semedo is in then this covers 1 glaring gap and allows Adama to go somewhere he is comfortable - hopefully Marcal is not out for long though Vinagre has a few, probably, less challenging games to try & sort himself out.

We created the square root of feck all first half. Then when we created really good chances we missed them. Totally different to the lack of creation I bemoaned last year but the end result of very few shots on target is still an issue. It will come I am sure . Otherwise we are in Agreement and it’s Man City on a good day and we gave them a game after giving them a half.

Lack of shots on target was hardly an issue. On another day Podence buries his chance in the bottom corner instead of scooping it over and Raul scores instead of side footing it wide.
