Wolves 1-1 Southampton - Verdict Thread

This thread sums VAR up. Most of the comments are about it rather than the game itself. The whole point of VAR was to remove doubt and end these kinds of discussions. It's actually made things worse.

Cutrone not doing enough in games for me. Likeable player as he always tried hard but hasn't really shown any quality consistently yet.

Young player in new country/league etc so obviously all isn't lost with him but I worry he's the type of player that needs lots of supply into the box to thrive and we don't do that .

I’ve got no issues with VARs result yesterday, the decisions were right. I knew both were coming back live, the handball was blatant and the Cutrone did look suspiciously he was certainly ahead of the defender and then back onside as he received the ball.

The issue is that it should have taken 10 seconds to look at the Raúl one (well I think they called it on the pitch anyway). The decisions are still way too slow, and looking at MOTD, a lot of them are still incorrect.

On the game, we didn’t really play well. We pressed them for 10 mins and then after that it was far too easy for them. Nuno got the XI/ system wrong. 5-3-2 doesn’t work with those players and/or against those teams (zero pace or directness, Traore can’t impact the game from there). We are relying on a career DM to be our attacking threat which worked to an extent linking with Doc last year , but doesn’t work this year or with Traore. So we end up hoofing it long to the forwards or Donk rather than actually creating anything.

Cutrone works hard but doesn’t really excel at anything, pretty much what Mourinho said on sky before one of our games. 3-4-3 instantly put saints on the back foot and gave us more attacking options even if they didn’t do anything.

Vallejo is awful. I’ve said it from the start, give him as much time as you want but he is 2 stone too light and 2 inches too short. He looks like a child. That isn’t going to change so he won’t survive in this league and he doesn’t make up for it in any other category. His 1v1 defending is poor and his distribution is terrible too. We’ve somehow managed to sign a CB who is 5th choice (we’ve resorted to Saiss ahead of him) in the easiest position to upgrade.

We need Jota back fully fit and Doc at RWB to give us a bit more going forward.

I don't like writing young players off when they haven't had loads of game time but haven't seen anything positive from Vallejo in any game, might as well give Kilman a go or stick Donk in there if required. Think our style depends on keeping defensive mistakes to a minimum and there have been too many individual errors this season

We had a very poor transfer window. We'd have been better off sitting on our hands and doing nothing. We've also got rid of Cav who was able to play in a system it now looks like we're moving back to. The next window needs to be great but January is never a good time to do deals.

If Jesus isn’t going to make the grade, is it possible to bring back Cameron John from his loan where he appeared to be getting decent reviews. Surely preferable bringing on Kilman or John as 5th choice CB rather than persevering with Jesus who just doesn’t appear to be up to it?

The answer is probably to sign a midfielder in January who can play in a 2 and play Donk or Saiss there if and when Bennett isn’t fit.

Cant recall John until January.

There is a player in Jesus but right now he looks like a kid settling into 1st team football and a new country. Time to trust Max. We promoted him for a reason so lets use him.

Shame to see all of this VAR discussion. I haven’t been to a PL game since the first game at Leicester where VAR overturned the Donk goal and the Leicester fans cheered and chanted “VAR VAR VAR”.

It was at that point I knew football had died and I haven’t wanted to go since (save for EL games where VAR isn’t used)

:icon_lol:

Jesus is not ready for the top flight. He is a permanent accident waiting to happen.
It was handball, and it looked intentional, which is a booking and Cutrone was offside.
No arguments with the decisions, I would have been livid if either stood against us. As has been said, VAR isn't the issue, fans have been calling for it for decades, long before a South American midget proved that he could punch his own weight in gold. Speeding up decision times clearly has to be a priority, but in the absence of any applied computer science to automate that, if we leave fine decisions to human analysts manually viewing a dozen camera angles, the problems will prevail. They has to be a reason why they're not building a 3d view from the multiple camera feeds which could either be viewed from 360 degrees or have a program make a decision from and then highlight what the decision is based on, but I'm not sure what it is.

Nearly a quarter of the way through the season and we look like lower mid-table fodder riddled with inconsistency... Probably have enough to avoid a serious relegation battle but we'll see. We don't give up defeats lightly though which is a good sign.

I'm still waiting for us to click, but maybe we won't and it'll be a 12th - 17th finish type season. A bit of a shame after the promise of last season, league position isn't everything but we don't seem to have made much progress on last year in any department (unlike, say, Leicester), definitely not with incoming transfers, all of which look as average (at best) as those who aren't wishful thinkers feared back in August.

The Traore project is still ongoing of course, I hope it doesn't become a fixation on shoehorning him in at the detriment of consistently good team performances.

It is a bit disappointing that we don’t seem to have built from last season - the additions are hit and miss at best.

That said, these are still good times.

We finished 7th last season, we are currently one point off 7th. Not going to lose my mind about that.

I imagine if you were a Watford fan you'd be saying to critical fans on their forum that you're not going to lose your mind about only being 4 points adrift, but that would obviously be the wrong element to focus on. Aside from a great performance at Man City we just don't look right, and we're just discussing why.

This. Performance levels nowhere near last season.

Well, Watford clearly have major issues going back to last season and have a dreadful defensive record, so no, I don't think I would say that.

We're unbeaten in six now, Jota has hardly played any of that run, we have injury issues at the back to contend with too, I don't think it's fair at all to say that we were good against City and no-one else.

crap clearance by vallejo but what is coady doing? he's meant to be a midfielder who's playing at CB. his form has been very inconsistent this season too many high profile errors/players getting the better of him.

This season v last season
Burnley at home 2 points worse
Leicester away 1 point better
Southampton at home two points worse
Man city away 3 points better
Everton away 3 points worse
Watford home 3 points better
Man United at home 2 points worse
Palace away 2 points worse
Chelsea home 3 points worse.

I think it is completely reasonable to ask questions as we have done worse in 6 of the 9 games than we did last year and one of the betters was City which is a once in blue moon result , excuse the pun, and Watford who haven't won all season.
And, as feared, we now get the injuries we were not getting last year.

Don't think we're that much different to last season, a few more individual errors which means we don't quite have the same points tally, we were inconsistant last year too, no need to panic. Didn't really expect us to finish as high as last season with us going big on Europa. We are nothing like Watford, they've been shit since the cup semi
