Wolves 0-0 Leicester: Verdict Thread

Is Marcal the new messiah now Jonny is back? šŸ˜…

I've already said I'm happy with the point and result, we were just discussing the features of our attacking play.

It seems like some of you don't want us to and we should shut up and just be 'happy'
No, he's sicknote still.
Debate away, but in that debate we should be looking for the positives, especially as it's been so negative of late.

Which is a problem, as our primary method of attack is for Adama/Pedro to try to beat every opposition player and then cross into the box
As I said though, we did for all our best chances.

Neves volley (albeit from a corner)
Traore shot blocked
Moutinho shot over
Neto at the back post (just blocked)
Silva chance saved

I'm bound to have forgotten one too.

Just because that's your sensibility it doesn't mean it's everyone's, or objectively better. We're not the management or coaching staff, we're just the fans.

It's something to build on, some decent signs but a lot of the same problems we've had all season. We've not been punished for individual errors, which is something I suppose. We don't need to over-compensate with exaggerated praise just because we've had a horror run. It was decent, and truly brilliant to see a Jonny appearance

I'm happy overall with the way we played today.

5 at the back against a decent side could have ended up with 10 men behind the ball constantly. But we got out plenty, passed it around and created some good chances. On another day we'd have won.

I don't think i said it was any of that in bold, or even thought it. Just putting my point of view in, which i might add had all the points you put in the latter.

Yeah, as I said in the matchday thread, I was pleasantly surprised with the performance. I didnā€™t expect much before the match kicked off, so a point is gladly accepted. However, we *should* have won the game.

Iā€™ve never been much of a fan of Moutinho/Neves as a partnership, but the last couple of games have offered some encouragement. What would be nice is if they can continue to improve instead of resorting to type in a couple of weeks. They were both snapping away in to tackles and hustling the Leicester midfield - which beforehand was an area of concern for most of us. Maddison didnā€™t really have a sniff, so big credit there.

My biggest criticism today is the Jose/Silva change. We were on top when that substitution was made and we gave that up. Iā€™ve not seen the same as others who think Fabio did ā€œmoreā€ in his brief cameo. Heā€™s missed a sitter and other than that not done much. Leicester started to pin us back a little bit once Silva was on, because, as we know - he isnā€™t a focal point.

If youā€™re bringing Silva on at that stage, Iā€™d have maybe got him on for Moutinho and moved Donk in to midfield and gone with 4 at the back - let Fabio and Willian play out the game together. But we all know how pragmatic Nuno is and at 0-0, he was never gonna go away from the back three/five.

All in all, itā€™s a decent point and 4 from this week is a good return considering where we were 2-3 weeks ago.

Well I actually enjoyed that game, best 90 minutes we've played for some time imo. Yes it was a bit defensive and no we didn't make the best of our chances but in the main we looked to have the game under control, only really the Vardy effort at the end had me wincing. Thought defensively we were excellent but a bit wasteful when we pinched the ball, however better chances created when we've played 3 at the back than for a while. So pleased to see Jonny back (yes I'm a fan boy) bit rusty with his distribution but is it coincidence we looked so solid at the back?......I think not.
I'm still on edge when Semedo's defending but apart from that very secure.
Pity Silva didn't tuck his chance away but it was good goalkeeping, yes he should score but the 'a good/real striker' bollocks is just childish.
Traore had a 10-15 minute spell when he was unplayable, it probably pisses me off more than it should when teams just take it in turns to take a yellow card against him.
I think its a really good point against a talented Leicester, a good starting point to get back to our best.
The most important thing to me is the amount of confidence the players will gain after a win against Arsenal and a solid display today.
Personally I'd rather we went to a back 4 most of the time but with Boly out, not sure we can.

I have to disagree there Jinks. Silva got about the pitch more and got more involved than Jose did. Especially coming very deep out wide and trying to link things a bit to help the fullbacks play out of defence.

I will preface by saying this is all IMO and not to be taken as fact - just in case it needs saying ;)

Part of why Leicester can commit bodies further forward is their defenders are individually quite strong. Justin is very good for a young FB playing on his weak side, Soyuncu and Fofana are both very solid CBs, Pereira is very good (albeit Neto made him look a bit silly a couple times in the first half - says more for the latter than the former). Even though it was Evans today he's not exactly a mug either.

If they lose the ball high up and get countered it's not so much of an issue for them and they have no problem taking yellows if needs be, as we saw more than once.

Barring Jonny and probably Boly I wouldn't say any of our defenders are particularly strong one on one - if the ball gets past our midfield on a counter it starts to look a bit panic stations and we don't have a huge amount of pace defensively either.

That is a relief Jonny was planned to do 45. Made a good impact on the game and the difference between him and Hoever was pretty clear to see. Hoever has a lot of good attributes but he makes some rash decisions at times.
He does but if we do still need options, he looks more comfortable on left than Semedo

Johnny literally posted this on the previous page:

William's hold up and link play was very good in the first half. Fabio's isn't at the moment.

Some of the near post runs WJ made that took away defenders was also very good, particularly for the Traore chance, which was excellently blocked by Justin (MotM IMO).

To say he contributed nothing is silly.

Which is all correct. It was a difficult game for him to get in to for large parts - we all saw how it panned out with Neto and Traore mainly getting their heads down and running with the ball rather than actually working Jose in to attacks.

Even without him ā€œdoing muchā€, his presence up top gave their defence something to think about.

Besides, Iā€™m not saying Fabio shouldnā€™t have come on. Iā€™d have preferred it for someone else and then we could have played with them both.

These are very good experiences for him. Did pretty well against Chelsea, then not so great at Palace, then OK today. Will certainly be better for the minutes which he wasnā€™t getting first half of the season

Harsh on WJ who had zero service and muscled his way into the box for crosses that were either too high or behind him. Zero service. Fabio did not hold the ball up at all as he isnā€™t strong enough for that, but hit the games best chance. Thems the breaks
Youā€™ve misunderstood my post. Iā€™m not being critical of Jose - Iā€™d have left him on! Andy just confused me by saying if Fabio had ā€œdone what WJ had done heā€™d have been slatedā€.

If Boly is out for a while I'd be tempted to keep a back three with Donck in.

I guess a back four with Jonny at left back wouldn't be so bad but will lack mobility in the middle (coady and saiss/kilman) against some teams.
Donk did ok today - although he annoyed me by how much he would run forwards, check and then pass back to Coady - you can pass forwards Donk! Might be that heā€™s getting used to the position again, so Iā€™d like to see improvement if he stays there.

also almost got caught out for the vardy header by waiting for it to come to him, rather than attacking it - was good movement by vardy though.

As I am Patricios biggest critic on here it was great to see him come through a pack of players to punch the late on. Itā€™s a while since he has done that so well
