West Ham 2-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I think a lot of people overrated/overestimate our players. O'Neil has had ample time to turn results around now and can have no complaints when he is inevitably sacked but I don't see a way this squad stays up anyway. With the defense we have, we are going down regardless the best we can hope for is to be in touching distance when the window opens and to buy some new players. Unfortunately it doesn't sound like much is going to be made available.
Your possibly right about us overrating our players but even so there are enough decent ones for us not to be in this situation, with a decent coach in charge. Our defenders aren't the best but again with decent coaching and sensible tactics we should be capable of managing lower mid table without being in the drop zone.
I'd suggest most of our midfielders and Cunha, plus Larsen would be welcome in any of the 6-14th place squads.

Collectively our full backs, midfield and forwards are upper mid table, our goalkeepers and centre halves Championship. The money we get in the Summer will show that. A good manager at the start of the season would have coached around those weaknesses and had us finish about 13th to 15th imo.

With confidence shot, effectively 5 points off safety and GON in charge of and likely not to win another must win game at the weekend as seems likely, then the calibre of manager we are going to get, even if an upgrade, will have too much on his plate.

I've got no issues with the 1st goal being a corner. Almost impossible for the on field officials to spot.l that. And VAR can't get involved. We have to defend the corner better which is the biggest issue there.

The foul on Bueno is unacceptable though. I'm sure there was an identical foul given as a penalty for a slblatant shove in the back in last week's games in the Prem too. I can't remember it offhand now though.

The Bellegarde one should be a penalty but I've seen them not given before for treading on a foot. The issue is it looks like he's delayed going down purely because he already had that foot planted and wasn't tripped or anything. The pundits and comms didn't seem to understand that subtlety.
Pretty much where I am Bear.

I would add that Guedes was a Penalty as well, however we did score 60 seconds later.

Is it too much to ask Ref and Var combined to get things correct?

So much patronising crap from the national media, I think if he only picks up another 4-5 points all season they’d still defend him.
Trust me if it was their club in this position they wouldn’t put up with it.

A big part of it is because they see us as a piddly little club who should feel grateful to be in the Premier League, how dare we be pissed off.

Talksport this morning McCoist and Stelling saying we need to give him more time. 😅😅 He's the new Steve Bruce.

If we sacked him and still went down it would’ve been because we didn’t give GON more time.
It’s just really poor analysis and lazy frankly.
More time for what exactly?
25 games clearly not enough to get more than 3 wins. Never known a 'manager' survive such a run.

Cundy and O'Hara were taking the piss out of Postecoglu and Lopetegui - just not working, what are they trying to do, what is the style, etc, got to go but constantly defending O'Neil and saying he needs more time. Get fed up of hearing 'he's a good manager', 'he's a good guy', 'he'll turn it around' not to mention the constant parroting of his excuses

Yeah it’s like we should be a guinea pig in the progression of GON career and tough shit if it doesn’t work out.
As said if he was a foreign coach who wasn’t all buddy buddy with his media pals he would be being hounded out.
We’re not a charity to young English managers.

From what i've watched over the last few weeks, we're a charity for goalkeepers too.
Johnson stood like a statue for the headed goal, a mere gesture of putting his arms up, and was behind the crowd of wolves defenders when it was as obvious as fuck where bowen was gonna put the ball.
There are things wrong with sa, but there's simply nothing right at all with johnson.

I wouldn't blame Johnstone for either goal. The first he's a bit flat footed, but I don't think it makes much difference, although like a number of other goals he's conceded it's not a good look. Nothing he can do with the second, goes too far to his right early and he can get done at his near post like Sanchez did on Sunday. Guedes, Bellegarde, the ref and Gomes are where to look for that one

Don't think there's much Johnstone can do on the first, it looks bad because he ends up so statuesque but he's shuffled across to cover the post when the corner goes deep so he's fucked as soon as Soucek heads it back across. The height on the header completely takes him out of it.

Second goal Toti could do a lot more for me. Guedes sells himself too easily but once he goes over to Bowen it leaves Paqueta free and Toti should be looking to cover him off as he's marking no-one else but he does nothing from the moment the ball goes back to Bowen to when it ends up in the net. If he'd pushed out towards Paqueta then he would've been closer to Bowen once he'd beaten Guedes and maybe had a chance to influence things more.

Think other keepers in the league make the save anyway - we know Johnstone is far from the most athletic so no surprise he doesn't do so but he isn't far away from it in the end.

Which podcasts are pro Gone? I.listen to a few, the Wolves report, Wolves 77, Talking Wolves and they've wanted him out for weeks?

Edit: I didn't even mean to write "Gone" there 🙈
But if you listen to the Talking Wolves podcast today (I know, I know…) yer man Dave is a monumental apologist for O’Neil and the club. It would seem impossible, but he can’t bring himself to say he’s just plain sht, which is the answer to the baffling conundrum that so mystifies these guys: why are we where we are? He won’t call out the stark staring hubris at work. What they won’t apologise for is their stupidity in backing him for so long in the first place even when the evidence is there on the slab in front of them.

The opinions of the other host just can’t be considered seriously. He literally either never goes to the games or, when he does, revels in the fact he turns up late, spends what time he’s at the ground in the concourse doing his acca, and then leaves early. The archetype of the fan I’d rather we didn’t have.

Yeah Matt Cooper speaks with such confidence and conviction, yet as you say he admits to barely watching the games.

I like Dave though, he watches us home and away and his opinions are thought through, even if I don't agree with him, he's good value.
