WBA 1-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

Our full backs aren`t very good at cutting out crosses and our centre backs aren`t very good at dealing with them. Not too good when our other outfield players aren`t creating much.

Semedo was marking AMN, if Semedo leaves AMN then there is a simple ball in for AMN to run onto which takes Coady out of position.

If Coady marks AMN then AMN can easily pull Coady out of position and make space.

For me, Semedo has been left with two problems to deal. As right midfielder and DM it's for OO and Donk to help out here.

Of course, none of it's a problem if Saiss marks his man.

It was a poor shape and positioning from two or three players. Basic set up essentially. Nuno will sort it I'm sure.

It's one thing we've abandoned since Doherty left and Semedo took over: you'd frequently see Neves or Donck covering Doherty's frailties and coming over to help. It looked a miscommunication between Donck and OO to me.

Donck pressing ball carrier - fine.
Semedo in position shift out, and Coady shuffle accross - fine.

Semedo hesitates and steps 3 yards backwards. 1) Donck should cut that out if it goes there 2) Coady is in position to cover it. Semedo has no business covering him.

It’s not a massive error but it allows Townsend to have plenty of time, and make his mind up to cross early.

The big error is Saiss bizarrely running 5 yards under the ball. But this is what he does.

Semedo could have been better positioned and that MAY have meant he cut out the cross or stopped Townsend deciding to cross. But it’s all irrelevant if Saiss does his job in any capacity.

Yep, well illustrated. Saiss either has to attack the ball or stay with his man (and Coady clearly passed him on). He does neither.

Good ball in like.

Yep, although if we are set up right he probably doesn't have the time to compose himself and put in such a good ball. Saiss is clearly the main man at fault though.

Excellent visuals there Punts and I agree with what you've said.

Just one question I’d ask about picture one and two...

where is the right midfielder covering Semedo?

oh, picture three... there he jogs

Semedo has done nothing wrong for me, at least not enough for the attacks on him on here

The stuff outside the box is slack, perhaps a lack of communication to get Semedo moving out quickly when Coady first starts shuffling over or just the former not responding quickly.

That last picture is awful defending in the box though, neither Coady or Saiss anywhere near their men, RAN allowed his man to get in goal side too.

How old were you in 2003 when Bobby Zamora was tearing it up YW? ;)

Just a thought - why don't we move Coady back to midfield when we get a decent CB? Then we keep his motivational skills, plus his forward passes will be even more effective, also he could play as DM, releasing Neves into a more attacking role.

I think that's a decent squad option, don't think he has the legs to make it strategy number 1 though.

Not for me on Coady in midfield, as TT says he doesn't have the legs for it. If we think Neves is slow in there, Coady is next level
