WBA 1-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

I think the issue with Semedo is, people just remember the one cock up, because usually it leads to us conceding or giving up a very good chance. So he can play well for 95% of the match but then the 5% where he does something stupid which costs us goals/points is the bit people remember. Understandably, I guess. But I would say he has definitely improved as the season has progressed.

It was exactly the same for Neil Collins, would be excellent for 89 mins, then he'd get sent off or score an own goal (or both against Reading) or just do something dreadful.

There have been several Semedo cock ups over the season though, it's fair that he's got criticism, but it's wrong to not give him credit for his last few games too.

He gets credit for me and I've seen a lot of people acknowledge that he has improved but it definitely hasn't been value for money so far and no matter how well you play you can't be making that many mistakes that lead to goals and penalties. Hopefully he improves in his second season in the country/league - it happens a fair bit.

It’s just expectations though - if you sign from Barca with a hefty price tag you would expect him to be the stand out player every week, which he will never be.

Most touches, and high numbers of interceptions and tackles are not good indicators of good full back play, his numbers in that regard are high through a combination of teams targeting him and sometimes leaving him isolated.

Maybe in a wider sense that could be true, but Semedo's touches for us aren't a sign of weakness, it's a sign he is a dynamic player who moves up and down the field, contributes to all phases of the game, and is left in isolation even in a back 3 more than any other player.

His touches are high because of high involvement. Which shows some of our faults and like of control this season.

I think Semedo has improved over the season but , like RAN he is an attacking full back first , a defensive full back second. That's fine if we are a side that create a lot of good chances for good striker's to finish. We are not creating the amount of penalty box chances needed to allow for our defensive deficiencies, such as lack over pace in the centre. Again, it sounds very Keeganesque , but if we are going to play a game where we are trying to outscore teams we will need to create more good chances and take them.

I think Semedos touches show the different role he has to Doc. For me, he's almost an extra midfielder / someone you can give the ball to if your underpressure and be pretty sure we'll keep possession

It's more about our two CBs not being good enough than the full-backs being the issue, in my opinion. I wouldn't say Alexander-Arnold, Walker or Zinchenko are defensive full-backs first and foremost, but they have Van Dijk, Dias and Stones/Laporte in the middle.

Doherty was shite. He offered absolutely nothing in general play and couldn't defend.

Watch Spurs offer him back to us for free (well, writing off what they owe) and we say no.

Doherty was a threat going forward, that's what he offered.

He had a talent / knack for scoring goals, maybe he missed his calling as a lazy poacher

Not sure what this threat was as he never topped four league goals in a season and couldn't cross a fucking road.

The luckiest man in football, seriously. League of Ireland ability and ended up at Spurs.

This really has got silly, 15 goals in 95 games over his 2 seasons whilst we were in the top flight. It's disingenuous to claim his goalscoring record wasn't good considering his position.

He also got 10 premier league assists (not sure how many in all competitions), lets not let the facts get in the way of a really odd hatred for a player that served us well over a number of seasons and was part of our 2 most successful seasons in our lifetimes.

I'm a little confused, are we blaming Semedo for the goal? He was marking a man and couldn't shift out wide until the whole defence shifted across.

For me we should be asking questions such as:

Where was Otasowie?
Should Donck have slotted in to cover for Otasowie/Semedo
Why did Saiss do a weird stop start run, lose his man and totally miss the ball?

It looks poor all round. Semedo is half arsed getting across , Saiss is under it and marking no one. Dendoncker is wandering. There are 4 of ours and three of their in the box and two of theirs are free. Its a poor goal to concede but well executed by them.

Desperate goal to concede . Semedo was so far off his man he was nearly better off staying where he was . Saiss and Donk marking no one .
If we are to stick to a back 4 then as several here have pointed out we need better centre backs . They need to be a decent size as well . Coady and Saiss are lightweight in comparison to a lot of others around , and lets be fair , neither of them started out playing for us as centre backs . They have both been shoehorned in there and given that fact have done quite well .

Hate it when Donk does that wandering shit, but its not on him - the goal is on Saiss.
