Villa 4 - 1 Wolves: Verdict

It would just be short term. We need to go for the jugular, 6 points this week and we'll go up. Less than that and it's really up for debate. 442 with Leo and Afobe up top would take these teams apart, we need that confidence
Agree with that, at home and a bit weaker opposition, lets go 4-4-2 and really put the pressure on..Afobe is coming back in confidence and that could take some pressure off Leo..pretty sure Bennett will come in for Batth and Saiss for Alf too..

What really worries me is that we have gone with more or less the same team all season and suddenly the players looked mentally and physically knackered. In the second half yesterday we looked like a runner that has set off too quickly in a marathon and – as a few people have said – the comparisons with what fans of other teams have said about Nuno is worrying, to put it mildly.
As for Batth, I’m don’t get this ‘had a great game at Leeds.’ He was OK, but that was against a piss-poor Leeds team – and their free kick in the first minute (from which they nearly scored) was down to Batth buggering about. Every team he gets the ball he’s terrified: you can see him fighting the desire to hoof it every time. Tim II will give him a generous 5/10 but in reality it was 0/10 yesterday and we should drive him up to Sheffield or Leeds and tell him to spend the rest of the season house-hunting.

Hindsight is great after Wednesday no one would have complained at Batth starting yesterday.
Hmm,some on the build up thread had Bennett back in and I pointed out straight away on the Leeds thread that "thank god Lassoga doesn't chase defenders down"

Misguidingly, I thought Villa would sit off us more and he might scrape through the game but it wasn't to be.

He's a bombscare to be honest,he has none of the composure to play in this team and you could see after 10 minutes Villa was a match above his level.

Worryingly, Nuno should have seen this and hooked him early on.

Yep clear it wasn’t working at half time, late in the first half he hoofed an aimless pass which put us under huge pressure.
Few games ago 90 points would have certainly got you over the line not so sure it will now. W5 D3 L2 gets us to 94 points if you don’t go up with that you can consider yourself unlucky.

Disagree completely with the change of system. When we move to that 352 shape we always look worse, we lose the pressing and control in the middle.

Absolutely case of getting back to basics, as I’ve said elsewhere I don’t buy the attitude of we’ve been great all season so it’ll all be fine. The here and now we’re putting in more bad performances than good. If we turn out 2nd half performances like we did last night a lot of teams will be able to punish us.

We've lost 2 games! It's not arrogance to look at the players in this team and think they are better than the majority of this league. They may not be performing at their best right now but Leeds showed they are still good enough.

Our form is patchy but there is no reason to believe we won't put a Leeds-sequel performance in rather than a Villa one against Reading and Burton. Two wins against these two at home is a must and there's no reason to say we won't.

Wouldn't that return be the same as Newcastle last season?
Would be amazingly unlucky if we weren't promoted with that amount of points for sure.
To be honest I agree with your prediction and think the 2 losses will be the TV matches again (city/Boro)

Newcastle last season was almost exactly as my signature, which is the average of what's been needed to win the Champo over the last 10 seasons. As I'm a sad twat and worked it out...

Well that certainly fucked a pleasant weekend.
Hey ho you can't win em all, but the villa....... Need another cypro now!

we’ll be fine we’re the best team in the league

Pretty much this, Nuno has developed a winning mentality within the club. The players believe in each other and the system of play so we just retain the same focus match to match to hit the required points totals.
Absolutely no concerns, the form is good.

It certainly fucked up a pleasant day out.

Was anyone else unfortunate enough to drink in the Witton Arms? What a shithole. Luckily we only grabbed a quick pint 30 mins before the match. Wouldn’t have fancied that being my only prematch boozer yesterday.

Kept off here for a bit, though the forum has been less unpleasant that it could have been (really not bothering to look at other Wolves forums!)

Poor performance from enough players to make yesterday difficult, though a clear penalty not given from the handball - would it have changed enough? Probably not as if you are not going to challenge a run towards goal for the last goal then you don't deserve to keep them out.

We have had bad days this season (I was at both of QPR & Fulham away) & bounced straight back - no reason for us not to do that against Reading & Burton after which we will all feel a bit better.

There will be changes for Reading

Before we completely write ourselves off and convince ourselves that we are going to capitulate I would take this opportunity to remind you the last time we got such a stuffing in the championship was 5 2 by Norwich and they were relegated that year and we won the league with 90 points.

Given that next week we'll be playing a team who will probably be relegated, I'm not exactly feeling comforted by that :)

In all honesty, the two games we've lost recently have been to promotion chasing teams in excellent form. The two draws before that were to a playoff chaser and a last minute equaliser from a goalie mistake.
Basically the results are disappointing, but add some context and they are forgivable. Fail to win the next couple will be much less forgivable, but I would back us to win both. The title is looking 50:50 atm, which is very much our own fault, but we're still a long way clear of third so promotion should still be a matter of when, and that should be the main goal.

I'm looking forward to Tuesday for the team to show why they are top of the league.

Word on the ref Mr Coote same bloke that officiated last seasons fixture, his performances was just a tad better than last years debacle.
To miss the Snodgrass handball was just appalling it was clear as day on tv in real time, Doherty pen debatable but if Neves is penalised for the foul that led to the second goal then consistency says it was a penalty.
Having said all this Villa would still have won the game regardless of his incompetence.

We haven't become a rubbish team overnight. This result has been coming and should firmly wake us up that this season isn't over by a long way.

I've no doubt the players are tired and I think Nuno has to trust the squad and give some players a break. The wingbacks need a break especially as we play again on Tuesday. I wouldn't be against 4 at the back with with Bennett or Coady at RB to facilitate a rest.

Baath doesn't get to play again this season, we have to go with Bennett or Hause. Afobe should start even though I don't think he's up to speed with our system yet as Bonatini is proving to not be a threat.

I'm really hoping the squad are hurting from this defeat and use it as motivation to go on a run.
