Trump

Richard Nixon had a presumptive pardon for crimes he had not yet been charged for. I think the timing of a presumptive pardon is key, Biden would want the charges laid before intervening. If he pardons Trump for something he has not yet been charged for Trump will spin that to his advantage.

A pardon also has to be accepted, if Trump accepts a pardon it would suggest guilt.
It wouldn’t be Biden though... Trump steps down, Pence takes over as President and preemptively pardons Trump

It's all moot. There's very little chance anything like that happens to Trump, and whoever it was that said he'd be a martyr if he was arrested would be, IMO, spot on.

Biden has been very clear in his messaging so far that he is interesting in trying to "heal" America, not hold any political grudges. As much as it would give me joy to see Trump behind bars, it would incense a huge number of the ~70m people who voted for him, possibly bringing on yet another reactionary wave and clearing the path for emboldened Trump-isms to continue throughout Biden's presidency, and possibly make the 2024 election yet another swing to the far right.

Alan might understand this better than me, but if a state decides to charge him with an offence then a federal pardon does not cover that. E.g. if NY charges him with money laundering or tax evasion.

It's NY which have a huge tax evasion case pending I think?

I believe that is correct, but I am not certain.

It is correct. US Presidents can only pardon federal offences. If a state like NY pursues Trump, as appears to be the case, neither Pence (as deputizing President) nor Biden can issue a pardon.

The interesting question for me is what will now happen to Bill Barr?

So, good to see Trump gone, but how much can Biden do with a Republican Congress?

Trump is back to tweeting - he’s definately going down crazily...

THE OBSERVERS WERE NOT ALLOWED INTO THE COUNTING ROOMS. I WON THE ELECTION, GOT 71,000,000 LEGAL VOTES. BAD THINGS HAPPENED WHICH OUR OBSERVERS WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SEE. NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. MILLIONS OF MAIL-IN BALLOTS WERE SENT TO PEOPLE WHO NEVER ASKED FOR THEM!

Deutcsh bank looking for early loan repayment or taking of trumps assets to get their money back Asap so they can cut ties with the trump brand, owes them a couple of hundred million dollars

A lot of VERY happy customers today, including an elderly white lady:
"We are lifelong Republicans, but I could not vote for that man. I told my husband that in 4 years time he can vote Republican but this time he is voting Dem. Afterwards he said 'thank you so much for making me do that'".

It’s about 400 million

I sincerely hope we get him out of the White House and just let it be. I am dreadfully aware that his supporters will take whatever ammunition they can get.

I'm pretty sure you can't pardon federal crimes and New York has a massive investigation into his crimes ongoing that Eric was interview for just this past month. Donald is also going to have his DNA taken about an alleged rape, back in the day. The dress the lady was wearing is still in evidence and they want to see if the orange stain on it is his gentlemen's relish.

Literally and figuratively

If you look up "Al Gore" on Twitter, all the Trump supporters are trying to draw comparisons to this election and the Gore/Bush Florida situation 20 years ago. Clutching at straws like a good'n.

That was a recount in one state. Which decided the whole election. By 500 dodgy ballots.

Recounts don’t turn around deficits in the thousands. Plus there are four states in play.

Looks like he wants the recounts but wants everyone else to stump up the dosh to pay for them. Ready to throw in the towel

I saw on that John Oliver show that according to the small print on the site, 50% of the donations will go against debts accrued by the Trump campaign in general.
