The Winter 2018/19 Transfer Thread

People clearly forgetting we still have Joe Mason at the club...

Leo wasn't going to feature for us again this season, so right to let him move on.

If no one comes in in the next 5 hrs (which I would doubt) then it's not a disaster and would rather we didn't unless it is a useful addition given that we are 16 points clear of the bottom 3 with 14 games to go.

If we continue with the 2 up front & 3 in midfield then Cav can do a job if we need it (Costa & Traore couldn't, but don't expect them to see that much time now). Will in no way be as good as Jiminez there, but enough to get us through

I feel Costa is going to be another one "left behind" in a similar vein to Bonatini come the summer (unless he improves fairly rapidly)

You say Cav could ‘do a job’... I’ve not seen any evidence this season that Cav, Costa or Traore could ‘do a job’ in Jota’s position - which at least 2 of them should in theory be able to do.

If Raul was ruled out for any length of time - there is no chance whatsoever that any of those three could ‘do a job’...

I’m sorry - but that’s Theresa May levels of wishful thinking.

I agree. We’ve been very fortunate on the injury front this season so far. Seems a bit weird that we’ve worked so hard to get to 7th in the league at this point of the season, and in a good position in the cup - to risk it all by not strengthening in key areas where we currently lack cover. I’m all for getting the right players and the right fit - and I appreciate it’s difficult - but that’s what our scouts get paid for. Just seems really short sighted to say “we’ll be alright”.

Cav could do the Jota role. He has been hot and cold this season and he seems to be the one Nuno properly gets annoyed at when he has a poor game.

As with any back up, they are generally a poorer version of what is there or else they wouldn't be the back up. Glance at the Kane back up over at Spurs.

If Raul does get crocked then we will probably have to revert back to the 3. Which isn't the end of the world and not like we have to get used to a new formation.

Not one person would be reassured if Leo was suddenly starting league games, he isn't even a factor.

We've tried to sign Abraham (he didn't want to come, probably because he wouldn't play) and Azmoun looked on but his current club don't like our terms, we don't want to risk £14m on someone who has a moderate scoring record in Russia before at least having a look at him, so that's off. If there isn't a great deal else out there that the manager fancies then that's that. Have another look in the summer.

The morbid fear people have about injuries blows my mind. Don't recall this level of panic when for over a decade we had one striker who was at least 50 times better than anyone else at the club.

I did post an article that says this is bollocks.

As said above, Leo wouldn’t have been involved for the rest of this season anyway. If Raul or Jota get injured we’ll switch back to the front 3 most likely or give Cav a go in a 2.

Whether Bonatini left or not, in an ideal world we needed another striker.

If Raul picks up a serious injury & we’re left playing Costa or Traore up top - and end up falling away down to 13th/14th in the league, do we just shrug our shoulders and go “ah well”?

I don’t think anyone disputes it’s difficult to sign a striker in January, but that’s 2-3 transfer windows in a row where we’ve not strengthened or brought adequate cover in when it’s needed. We won’t continue to get away with it as we have done.

But for the record, I’m not panicking. I’m fairly at ease about the situation. I just don’t feel the need to act like going in to the final 15-20 games (depending on how far we progress in the cup) with one senior striker on the books is an ideal situation.

Brighton have got notional back up for Glenn Murray, how do you think they'd do without him?

If we lost one of our best players then we would probably struggle regardless, like a lot of teams. Although that said we've just done without our best defender for three games and not lost any of them.

And it's the framing of "if he gets injured" which then turns into a supposed inevitability, why is there any reason to suppose he will? He's not injury prone and clearly we're very good at looking after our players.

When I said Cav could do a job then it wasn't an admission that he would really be what we would want to see to cover - merely that I don't want us spending shed loads of cash unless we are really sure that it is a goer longer term.

Azmoun on a loan with an option might work, but not worth it if we are committed to the purchase before we see whether he is worth it. An yes I would love to win the cup or get 7th, but realistically either would have seriously exceeded our expectations for this season

No one is panicking or anything... but I agree with Jinky.

We are in a great position in the League and could also do something great in the Cup.

We aren’t in any danger of going down either.

BUT we have been fortunate on the injury front whatever Johnny says...

If Raul and / Diogo were out of the picture for a length of time we would have a pretty unsatisfactory second half of the season...

I agree we can’t spunk millions on someone just for the hell of it... but there must be a viable option out there somewhere surely.

I hope it doesn’t come back to bite us.

All of this.

But it wouldn't be deadline day without a bit of blind panic I suppose.

There is a huge difference to the team when it plays without Raul and Jota. Both have become so far and away our first choices up top it is a worry that others havent come close to challenge consistently. Costa has been really diappointing and Traore just hasnt stepped up. Can has had good and bad games so he is in the middle. Agree an addition as a backup would be good.

I'm not sure what people want the club to do though.

You can't point the finger at them for "penny pinching". We've gone for two strikers, neither of whom have come off. There's clearly a lot of dreck out there that we want to avoid. A lot of players will be reticent to join us on a temporary basis as they won't get in the team, barring an injury, and presumably footballers don't think that everyone's going to collapse with multiple cruciate injuries every game like fans seemingly do. The manager has gone on record multiple times as saying he wants a small squad. We've got rid of one player who wasn't going to play anyway. What percentage of teams across the major European leagues currently have nothing at all to play for and will therefore be comfortable letting good players go in the middle of the season? Who has moved this window that we should have grabbed?

There's no sense of complacency here, I'm not sure where the finger of blame is supposed to be pointed.

Don’t be deliberately argumentative... ‘blind panic’ my arse.

Both me and Jinky have both expressed perfectly valid reasons for raising the point...

You don’t agree... that’s fine - but don’t try to sound all superior.

It’s just your opinion.

No one is actually panicking.

We could say this about any position if we lost 2 players though.

Jonny & Doc get crocked. Who do we play at RWB?
Any 2 from the back 3

Personally, I think we would seriously miss Dendoncker if he got injured as we don't have another midfielder who can match what he does in the adjusted formation.

I would say from the lack of panic from Wolves, they are happy if the worst happened they have enough to ensure we remain competitive. We all love a new signing but if we are going into the final 14 league games and however many Cup games with a back up of Cav, Costa, Traore, MGW and possibly Ennis (if we suddenly get 4 years worth of injuries in 1 month) and 2 formations we can use then I am relaxed with that.
