The Video Games Thread II - The Resurrection

Been playing Battlefield 3, just finished a game of Conquest on a map called Seine Crossing; a 20 minute battle, 21 kills, 0 deaths, 2 flag captures, 3 flag defends, 4 Combat Efficiency Ribbons earned... Zero deaths in a 20+ minute game! I may as well just trade the game in now because that'll never happen again!

If I had BF3 on a console I'd probably be tempted to trade it in at this point. The annoying downside of PC means I can't though :(. I want to like it but I constantly seem to be on a team that is clueless about how to play something team based. I've been on teams that have lost by 250+ points on conquest. How is that even possible? Both teams start with only 300 tickets!. Then there's rush where on defence no one seems to have any clue what the 2 blue squares lettered A and B actually represent. Far too many times I'm playing on a team that treats these game modes like a death match and ignore absolutely everything. Then there's basic squad based game play. I've been in squads where the other 3 members are support. I've ran out of ammo next to them and asked in chat for ammo. Do they drop any? Do they hell. I end up running out of ammo completely and having to pick up some dead guys kit just to keep going. Just drop ammo or health. Anywhere there is a player on your team just drop them. It's free points!.

Personally I think BF3 should have taken a leaf out of Team Fortress 2's book when it came to the scoreboard. In TF2 all the scoreboard shows is your points and latency, no kd. You can view your own kd in the scoreboard as there is a breakdown of your stats below it, but it only shows yours. That way people feel a little less inclined to prove anything as they could have a bad kd yet no one else can see it but then still have loads of points for simply helping the team and rightfully so appear a good player. For me there's no reason at all in team based game modes for the kd to be displayed. I'm just waiting until back to Karkand is released now so I can revisit those maps but I don't see myself playing this into the new year. I enjoy the game but I give up playing amongst idiots. From my experience of BF3 so far, TF2 still offers me a far more enjoyable and superior team based game.

Now my thoughts on Skyrim. Game of the year. Couple crashes, first one of which lost me a good 45mins of gameplay so now I quick save every 5 minutes. Really wish they used a Mass Effect style save system where save files are under character profiles so you choose your character then a save file rather than looking through a huge list of saves to find the character you want. The basic nuts and bolts of the game feel very much like Oblivion so in a way lacks that upgrade I felt when playing Oblivion after Morrowind. While at the moment I don't think I'd rate it better than Morrowind, I have only been playing it since Friday and would already say it's a much much better game than Oblivion.

In Oblivion everything level'd with you so things were never really over challenging. In Skyrim I've ran out of caves/mines quicker than I entered them. I've been chased across the plains panicking as I get stuck on a rock while whatever I'm running from closes in. I have so many quests I don't know where to start. The new crafting system is fun, although I only just learnt how discover ingredients first attribute thanks to the manual after being puzzled about it for ages. Only major complaint I have is the combat hasn't really changed that much. No real tactics when it comes to sword play other than hack and slash. All in all, It's Oblivion, improved on in almost every way. I do miss the colourful Cyrodiil forests though.

just checkin in from hols and not playin skyrim is the only thing I'm jealous about.

what's the travel system like? Any usual magic upgrades by class ( eg darkelf?) as I only play as a battlemage (of sorts)?

Hereford pretty much summed up the travel system. To extend on the class system and it's flexibility though, you no longer pick a class or star sign. You just level up what you want too and then select fallout style perks in the categories (For example, spend a perk in one handed weapons and you can get 20% more damage) you want. In Skyrim everything now counts towards your level where as In Oblivion your level progress was restricted to the class traits you chose for example as a mage you would only level up if you level'd individual stats such as destruction spells . Now, say at level 20 you're bored of playing battlemage and want to play Stealthy. Just start playing in a stealthy manner and you'll still level up. Although obviously at this point you'll have spent 20 level perks on mage type upgrades so won't be as an effective stealth based class as you could be had you started out that way.

You guys are really tempting me to add Skyrim to my Christmas list.

I'm miles away from those kind of stats, 2 weeks on and I'm having a really tough time adapting to the joypad.

Having the odd decent round but my inability to drop my sights on a target quick enough means I'm always the one coming worse off!

What does all you console players use - crosshairs, ironsights or 6 of one and half a dozen of the other?

Bought Skyrim 10 mins ago, can't wait.:windmilling:

Managerial economics can go fuck itself.

Combat system has supposedly been much changed and improved, LW. I think Skyrim basically looks like 'Game of Thrones: The Game' with a few more beasts and creatures thown in. I want it, but I can't afford it, yet.

I've just listened to a podcast that also points out the similarities between Skyrim and Game Of Thrones. (I've just bought the first book to try....)

Link? This interests me massively.

I almost always aim down the sights. Which is why in split second firefights when it's about who reacts quickest I tend to lose as even then I bring the sights up, by which time I'm generally dead! Which is why my 0 deaths game was great, I didn't get into any of those situations, I was able to keep everythimg at medium range which meant I could pick people off and my aging, slow reaction times were never tested!

Yeah I do try to play the long game a bit, but I always feel compelled to rush an objective. That's generally when I die.

Practice, practice, practice I guess...don't half miss my mouse and keyboard though!

Ta HW & PW, the travel is cool, same as some previous.

i started playing oblivion late and effectively did the same as i'd done in morrow and dagger. but then I found I should have been progressing the main mission in oblivion whereas in the others you could leave this alone other than a few tasks. as I'd prefer to develop the character for maybe 20 or so levels it would be good to know if there's any sign this would be detrimental. Once i'd found this out I ended up not playing oblivion much as a result.

the levelling thing may mean I have to change my style a bit. in those earlier games you could improve minor skills a lot without levelling, which was actually very useful. ta for all this, be good to know any other thoughts before Monday, when I kick off. the location of some free of charge glass armour would be nice ;)

When taking the objectives, in Conquest at least, I try to find an out of the way spot that still allows capture and remain as hidden as possible. I also approach those objectives pretty cautiously as there is nearly always a defender lurking somewhere. Alternatively, do it the cheap way and let your squad mates do the hard work and spawn on them at the last second before the objective is taken! It works for me!

I never touch the main quest until I am about 50 hours in. I did the same in Oblivion (why did you find this detrimental and not play as much - I don't understand?) I know a lot of people who never played the main quest in Oblivion and still clocked up 300 hours!

I believe that in Skyrim, if you do the first 2 or 3 parts of the main quest, the dragons then start to appear. This can be good or bad, depending on your point of view!

I'm 20 hours in and haven't seen a dragon yet. There'll be time enough for that in the future!

Sorry, haven't come across any glass armour yet - mind you, I've only explored one major town so far...and I still haven't finished there yet. This game is massive!!!!!

Rightio - here is a list of games I have on my shortlist for Christmas. I can choose two:

Batman: Arkham City. It's on the list as number 1, and will not be shifted. It's a definite. Arkham Asylum is one of the best games ever made, and the sequel is supposed to be bigger, longer, more varied and generally a lot better. So it's got.

Skyrim. The more you guys witter on about it, the more I'm being convinced that I should give it a go. It does look amazing - as I said on a previous page, it was only really the combat that stopped me playing Oblivion. HW telling me that he's spent 20 hours without touching the main quest actually really appeals to me. It sounds like a game where you can fuck around and lose yourself in a fantasy world, With dragons. Now that sounds ace. I am determined to give this a go, and give it the time it requires to experience it properly.

Assassins Creed Revelations. Apparently, it's more of the same which is a little bit disappointing because the first trailer I saw for it looked utterly amazing and a massive improvement graphically. I still want to see how Ezio's story ends, but it could probably wait.

Uncharted 3. I bloody LOVE this series. I've been surprised how little the second game came down in price, so I might hold off this for a while, but I will get it eventually.

FIFA 12. I haven't touched FIFA for ages. I love the series, but my attention has been elsewhere of late. Only a bit concerned that if I skip this one, I'll be a year behind with the new defensive style when I do decide to get an update.

So many games, and so little time/money to get them! At the moment, it looks like Skyrim will be joining Batman.
