The Rugby Thread

I dont think so Trev. Losing at rugby is horrid for me. I am so pleased tonight obviously, but if my lot lose at rugby it is hideous. It hurts. I still cannot believe we won that. I really can't. England will beat Australia for me. You are still going to get through this group.

Can I just say looking at John Inverdale is $#@!ing ace.

Just seems more conciliatory to me from England fans, I'm sure if Roy's England had just lost to Wales at Wembley the debate would be about how shit England were but I've never pretended to understand Rugby Union to be honest.

Matt Dawson says it better than I could:

It is a combination of individual skills and individual decision-making on the pitch. That has let England down. Going for the corner instead of goal. At the minimum, after a bad day at the office, you come away with a result. It was mystifying, as was the indiscipline. Kicking the ball away was mystifying. You have to change your tactics. Wales had weakness and used it to their advantage. It motivated them. I'll never forget this game because very rarely do you see such spirit in adversity away from home. This is a massive, if not their biggest ever, win.

I'll just stick to "England players are as thick as pigshit".

England vs Wales in rugby is an even matchup, whereas if England lost to Wales at football, especially at home, it would be a massive upset (ridiculous current FIFA rankings notwithstanding).

What a brave gutsy performance by Wales to just hang in there with no set piece platform and all those injuries, and at the same time England imploded absolutely no leadership on the field, should have taken the draw. Lancaster changes as well when in control have to be questioned.

Dont know what it says about preparation, but when a back line of 2 scrum halfs, 2 fly halfs and a flanker score a try like that it makes you wonder!

A think I developed a twitch just watching Biggar take a kick but fair play to him, they didnt miss Halfpenny.

Enjoy the night Paddy!

I can't believe we won that game. I really can't. We must just beat Fiji so the Australia game doesn't hopefully matter. England can still beat Australia. They really can. I hope they do as I believe a rematch of that would be the ULTIMATE world cup final.

Might have the scenario where we all beat each other and it comes down to bonus points or points difference.
If we lose to Australia Lancaster may well be in deep shit.

I can't see us beating Australia to be honest, their scrum isn't bad at all these days, their back row is awesome and their backs are as good as anybody else's. England are in deep shit.

If England do go out in the group stages then Lancaster's position may well come under scrutiny.
To be fair England weren't that bad tonight and really should've seen it out when 7 points ahead with 10 minutes to go.
Lancaster's changes were s bit mystifying at times towards the end.

The changes were odd to say the least. England had the game won for me and then blew it, good as Wales were.

If England beat Australia and Wales lose to Aus then it'll make things very interesting, bonus point could be pivotal against Fiji.

I would hope that Lancaster would be sacked within five minutes of us of an eventual non-qualification for the QFs. It would be a disgrace to not get out of the groups at home when you've had 4 years to prepare.

Honestly more upset by this defeat than the Wolves game earlier - predicted 1 - 1 for that & got it (just)

Tonight England had control & whilst the point margin was not great didn't expect more than 6 or 7 points in it. Then they decide to throw it away though kudos to Wales for having the heart to come through.

No offence, I don't think Wales were particularly good, they just kept their heads, played with intelligence and to their immense credit they never gave up. England, on the other hand, might well have been out on the piss for the last quarter of an hour.

If you'd offered me 3 points over England winning the rugby I'd take the 3 points everyday.
I like rugby but it's a much distant third behind cricket and football for me.

Won't disagree but from reading this site it didn't sound as if we were ever in with a chance of winning whereas England really should have.

If England do go out early Lancaster reign will be one of failure persistent runners up in 6 nations and eliminated early in a home World Cup.
Gut feeling is England will lose narrowly to Australia and go out and will have to play a meaningless game at the etihad.

Did England get a bonus point for only losing by 3 point margin?

Best thing for Wales is if England lose to Australia meaning the final match against Aus is no more than group decider.
If England beat Aus it'll make Wales final group game huge.

I'm not too despondent, very disappointing not to see the game out (subs odd, no attacking threat in the second half, stream of silly penalties conceded at the breakdown, debatable decision to go for the corner at the end) but I think we can beat Australia. If we don't, well, we knew this was the toughest group and we knew we'd had to be at our best to go through.
