The Royals

Current evidence suggests otherwise.
I think that's just your lack of understanding of the royal family.

The Queen has been in every living Britons life in one way or another.

I imagine many Britons had to be told who Edward is.

Guess we’ll see when he croaks!

Related note; y’all don’t have families beyond the royals who would be analogous to the Kennedys or Trumps?

Not that wield any power politically, no.

And you’ve missed my point, the Kennedys, Trumps and Bushs have all bought power with old money, the royal family have no power.

The King might want to go to war one day, but he can’t as he doesn’t have the right to even as head of the army. We have two houses for that.

Both Bushs and Kennedy had their finger on the trigger to go to war without any balance, and they all came from blood money.

Never understood why the debate over abolishing the monarchy here so often descends into "but things don't look better in the US do they?"

(Well, I do get it, it's because we're a resolutely monolingual country and as such everything ends up becoming a comparison with the US eventually.)

There are loads and loads of countries which have elected heads of state who both handle the ceremonial side of things but also represent the democratic will of the people when they have to actually make political decisions - the big one being choosing which representative in the legislature to invite to try to form a government. No wonder the Irish think we're so nuts (beyond, y'know... all the other reasons).

The argument for the abolition always comes back to 'look at France' still enjoy a thriving tourism without a Royal family, but it's taken them 230 years (and they're still miserable fuckers !!)
And the massive generalisation of what everyone else in the world thinks, would the Irish prefer another Cromwell figure instead ??

That makes no sense whatsoever

Richard Keys flew to the UK to "pay his respects". There's an anti-monarchy argument for you right there.

I still can't get my head round shit like this.

People are fucking crazy. Like genuine, howling at the moon crazy.

How isn't it?

People aren't coming to the UK to see the actual royal family outside of these kinds of events. They're coming to see the buildings, the art, etc.
"I can't believe how old everything is!" - me when I visit

That's the point. I don't doubt people would like to get a glimpse of the Queen/King when they visit Buckingham Palace even though they won't see them. I refuse to accept they wouldn't visit in the first place though. It's not like we'd burn the palace's down

Agreed.

I believe the Palace of Versailles is the most visited tourist attraction in Europe?

It's been a long while since there was any royalty in it!

We don't need the royal family for tourism, no one who comes here actually sees them, they like looking at the buildings.

I

Very concerning to see people arrested and charged for holding anti Royal signs in Edinburgh and London...also a lady arrested for calling Andrew a nonce, which is da truth

Not sure why people feel to turn up to hold up the signs etc but they certainly shouldn't be arrested for it. The zero protest stuff from the Government is all a bit North Korean/Russia.

People's accounts of the arrests are filled with the police not being sure why they are arresting them but they have to do it and 1 guy with a blank piece of paper being told if he writes anything that may offend (i.e Not my King) he will be arrested.
